Buys movies?
With all this talk of renting, I have NEVER rented a single HD or BD disc in my life.
Am I the only weirdo who buys and collects BD and HD movies? :D I guess I dont like other people touching my movies LOL I want virgin discs!
user7800 06-18-07, 07:36 PM People rent games and movies at the same time, its just easy. Why not test before you buy.
jagouar 06-18-07, 07:36 PM yes you are a wierdo... ;)
i rent only because 95% of movies released you dont want to see them more than once. why pay 4x as much to watch it once? Netflix/Blockbuster online have done alot to get people renting alot more.

Well, mind you, I buy the ones I love. I wont buy random stuff. Like Dragonheart and Hellboy. Loved those movies, so instant buy,
Ok Ok, I'm weird :D
vancouver 06-18-07, 07:39 PM i buy becuase by the time I factor in drive times and late fees its worth while to own. Thats just cuz im lazy thou.
prospect60 06-18-07, 08:01 PM I've never rented a DVD from any source online or inperson though my wife/kids have rented from BB. I guess it's an old LD habit as I absolutely hated looking at those discs and jackets that looked like somebody had played Shuffleboard on Concrete. I never had that problem with renting VHS and never bought anything other than Disney's/Kids tapes.
I like my Library to be honest.
I like Virgins.
ottscay 06-18-07, 08:11 PM I prefer to buy. But some movies really only deserve a rental...
xbdestroya 06-18-07, 08:24 PM If it's a movie I've seen and like, and believe I will see multiple times, then I buy. If it's a movie I haven't seen before (missed in theatre), or just need a singular fix with, then I rent. In the era of HD though, my purchases have far outnumbered my rentals, though that's not to say I'll purchase things just for the sake of doing so.
eapleitez 06-18-07, 08:25 PM You are not the only one, I haven't rented a DVD in 5 years.
If I want to see if a movie is worth buying (assuming I didn't catch it in the theater), I check it out on cable first. Haven't rented anything in years.
I used to buy DVDs all the time but I ended up with a lot of crap I didn't want due to blind buys. With BD I've done a lot more renting.
briankmonkey 06-18-07, 08:37 PM A combo of both. Price is a big factor though, if I can't find a good deal I'm not buying.
Haven't rented in like 3 years either. I buy all my movies.. But I may get netflix at some point.

I do not rent. I buy films that I want to see many times on an occasional basis & that I believe will take several years, if ever, to become available on hd.
AnthonyP 06-18-07, 09:41 PM I buy, but I know many people and to be honest except for people here I don't know others that have large home collection. For many people owning a movie is an oddity and for most more then 20 or 30 is unthought of.
This is a true story. We finished the first part of a project a few months ago, and the boss took out for lunch his team and me (I was a consultant on that project). Well during the meal one of the person said that I am constantly buying movies (I think he was weirded out because they were BDs and so relatively expensive and that I actually buy more or less every week). So one of the other guys goes "how many do you have, is it more then 20?" (I did not have the courage to tell him my BD collection was larger then that). I never answered the question, no matter how high the guesses went. But later the guy that guessed 20 said he has 7 DVDs.
The news is Big because most "normal" people rent and seeing it when they go to the rental store adds legitimacy in their eyes.
I haven't rented in years. My brother and sister are renting fiends. Go figure.
There are the few movies I go to see in theatre.
I pick up some others via HBO or on-demand.
I see a great many more movies for the first time on the Encore channels.
There are those that I buy based on reviews or past experience.
Encore has replaced renting for me.
I will be very happy when Sci Fi and Encore are in HD....
Baccusboy 06-18-07, 09:51 PM I buy because I have to. There isn't much available here in South Korea. I've been buying up lots of BR disks on E-bay and sending them to my parents in the USA. I will visit them in a week or two, and will return to Korea with them next month.
I'm buying for between $12 and $17 shipped on E-bay, if i'm patient. I'll probably sell some off here in Korea when I'm done with them, and keep the rest.

What happens when the total gets beyond 2000 (besides the rubber room)?
What happens when the total gets beyond 2000 (besides the rubber room)?
Yup, wanna borrow my straight jacket? I went nuts and bought 3 bills worth of BD and HDDVD stuff the other day
wormraper 06-18-07, 10:12 PM Nope you're not alone. I use netflix as my "testing grounds" If I like a movie and think I'll watch it again sometime I buy it. It's why I have over 400 DVD's and my HD DVD are climbing steadily. But I'm also frugal about my spending. I buy only If I can get sales or bogo etc from Used Places like E.B. Games etc..
balanceofpower 06-18-07, 11:16 PM I fall into the boat of a few others who buy a lot of movies and only watch them once. I'd estimate at least half my collection has been watched once, another 25% or so twice, and another quarter of movies I've watched multiple times. Being a little cautious now with HD and using Netflix, but I still do buy at least 4-5 a month.

To me a rental is loss of a movie worth keeping. I have the movie theater and HBO to tell me if I like a movie. I would rather see a crappy movie in a theater just for the atmosphere. Though I really didn't purchase DVDs all that often, I was at 250 before I stopped buying them, now I am at 80 something HD-DVDs.
Rob Tomlin 06-19-07, 02:00 AM I watch way too many movies...and there is a lot of crap out there that I would never want to own. I learned my lesson buying DVD's (nearly 500 of them). I only buy the best movies that I know I will watch over again. Other than that, I am using Netflix in a huge way!
I haven't rented in over 5 years now. It wasn't convenient, and the selection sucked. Plus, I tend to be rather spontaneous in terms of movie selection. Plus, I like owning.

No you are not weird at all.
I have never rented a thing and only buy what I like to watch repeatedly.
I have Direct TV for movies I want to watch one time.
I haven't rented in nearly ten years. The great movies (buyers) are far less common then the rubbish they throw out every month, year after year, etc. I buy the great ones and don't even waste time watching let alone renting the trash, simple, not saying I won't watch a so so flick, but thats what cable is for.
mproper 06-19-07, 08:42 AM I'm renting the HD stuff.
I bought DVDs, then recently sat back, looked at my collection, and realized if each movie averaged 95-100 minutes, it would take me about 2 months to watch every movie I owned. And that's if i didn't sleep, eat, go to the bathroom, etc.
I decided owning that many movies was a waste of money, so I only buy a handful of 'demo' HD discs now, and must-haves that will get decent replay.
Jiffylush 06-19-07, 09:19 AM I had completely stopped renting, but with blu-ray I have gotten back into it. I am actually using Blockbuster and Netflix. If my local store starts carrying BD then I will probably drop netflix.
I also have HD cable and most of the pay stations, so I get a lot of content in HD on my TiVo S3. The two trilogies are on it right now, I have been watching the old Star Wars movies with my kids for the first time in the last week.
MichaelHDDVD 06-19-07, 09:29 AM I mostly buy, I've only rented DVDs which aren't available on High Definition but I pretty much buy the movies I like.
Any movie I really want to watch, I go see it in a theater.
If I miss it, then I rent it. (netflix, or xboxlive)
If I loved it, then I will buy it, but not right away. And now with hi-def,
dvd buying has plummeted.
I try to buy all the movies I consider classics.
david.p 06-19-07, 10:50 AM Like a lot of people here, I consider my movie collection to be my personal "Best Of" list. I'd never buy anything I hadn't seen and I use Netflix to watch most movies. If I find something I really like and know I'd watch again and again, I usually end up buying it.
This also means that I'd definitely consider upgrading a large part of my collection to HD (on a movie by movie basis) depending on the jump in quality and the size of the role the visuals play in my appreciation of the film.
dragonyeuw 06-19-07, 10:54 AM I stopped blind buying ages ago, wound up with my fair share of crap that I've had a hard time selling off because it's..well...crap.I only buy movies I've seen before and know they will get enough viewings to justify owning.
I used to buy every DVD that interested me but then cooled off and mainly rented when we got one of the online rental places here in Canada. Then when I got into HD DVD last Summer I was buying everything I wanted (read double dipping) but then cooled that off. Got into bluray as well and currently I buy most of the bluray/hddvd discs I watch but I do get the occasional rental.
I am sure I'll buy mroe than rent with these formats because there is something cool about owning badass looking discs compared to buying DVDs
I buy and rent, both games and movies. Most things are not worth owning, especially $30 movies that I will never watch again. At least a $40-$60 game can give you 20+ hours of entertainment and have a resale value, unlike movies.
namechamps 06-19-07, 08:54 PM It's simple economics man.
A netflix subscription cost me $24 / month (cheaper plans available). That works out to about $5.50 per week. I get 4 movies per week so my cost is about $1.38 per movies. Let's just say $1.50 ea. For a movie to be a better deal owning it I would need to watch it more than 10x. A couple years ago I looked at my movies and sorted them by "watched once or twice", "watched a few times", "watched 5+ times". I don't have the exact #s anymore but about 80% were 1 or 2 times (sadly I have a couple 0 times). Maybe another 10-15% were a few times. Less than 10% (likely less than 5%) I watched more than 5 times. Even 5 times it is cheaper to rent but I think it is a good deal if I watch a movie 5 times.
Now I rent 90% of my movies and buy maybe 1 or 2 great movies per month. I am going to have a much smaller HD movie collection but they will all be "must haves".
Rentals have gained marketshare every year since the inception of DVD. This is despite falling DVD prices. The cheaper the sales price the less sense it makes to watch it. Rentals now make up about 31% of the DVD revenue. With the higher prices of HD media I expect that number to climb rapidly over next couple years. Digital Downloads will take Netflix to the next level (more convinence, speed, control). Detractors from downloads talk about insanely slow download speeds, right now my "download" time for a netflix rental is about 3 days and it hasn't stopped netflix from signing up millions of subcribers.

No offense, but some of you either have waaaay too much disposable income or you're OCD. Creased jackets? WTF?LOL Why would anyone buy a film they'll never watch more than once? I don't get it.
AnthonyP 06-20-07, 01:12 AM because you don't know if you will watch it more then once.
krunk4ever 06-20-07, 01:21 AM to me, i buy movies/tv series to collect. half of my dvds arent even out of their shrinkwrap. for me to buy a dvd, i must've seen it and love it. in one way, it's me supporting the movie and in another, it's to show off my collection of the films i love.
Rob Tomlin 06-20-07, 01:33 AM because you don't know if you will watch it more then once.

Not delay, it's price. On demand or Live DLs are $3-$6, way too much compared to Netflix. I don't have to watch a movie instantly, but I don't want to be raped on the price (and quality).
mrkrispy 06-20-07, 12:46 PM I won't buy most HD movies anymore and won't for quite some time. I don't think you should have to research a release to see what the chances are it will play 100% thru.
Bailey151 06-20-07, 12:55 PM Call me Mr. Lazy Tightwad.
Haven't been in a movie theater in close to 10 years - I ain't paying $10 a ticket to deal with the *sshats (the few always seem to ruin it for the many).
Early DVDs were almost exclusively rentals, too expensive to own. As DVD went mainstream purchases picked up. Just prior to HD media 99% of purchases were previously viewed or bargain bin = never, ever over $10.
With HD media it's back to the same, mostly rentals & a few purchases. Same as theaters I can't be bothered to go to BB - why? I can click the mouse & have them come to me.
I mostly buy mine, also.
Most likely because I have a home theater that I regular entertain with, so it's good to have the selection readily at hand.
However, I think more people may be renting these days, or a combination of both.
I also do not go to the local theaters regularly anymore. The presentation and convenience is better at home. I really yearn for the day when you will be able to show newly released movies in your own home right away instead of waiting months.
mike171979 06-22-07, 12:33 PM I have never rented a DVD either. Simply because every Tuesday I go down to Walmart look at all the new releases, if theres anything I think I might like, I buy it for 15 bucks.
It probably averages out to about buying 1 dvd a week. You know, sometimes there is nothing I want, and sometimes there are 2 I have to buy.
Anyway, at 15 bucks a DVD, I'd rather buy it and be able to watch it now and a year from now.
But I'm not going to buy a movie on HD-DVD if I already have it on DVD, and most HD-DVD movies are old movies, that I either didn't want, Or I bought on DVD.
And since there have only been a few new releases on HD-DVD that I wanted to buy I only own 6 HD DVD's.
So I do rent a lot of older movies on HD-DVD now.
Buys movies?

Am I the only weirdo who buys and collects BD and HD movies? :D I guess I dont like other people touching my movies LOL I want virgin discs!
Of course not. There's at least TWO of us.
On the other hand, renting makes good sense too.
For me, having a library to enjoy what I want, when I want, for the mood I'm in makes the MOST sense. Just me I guess.
Rob Tomlin 06-23-07, 12:11 PM I mostly buy mine, also.
Most likely because I have a home theater that I regular entertain with, so it's good to have the selection readily at hand.
Yes, we entertain in our HT a lot too (in fact, we have friends coming over later today) and yes, this is a valid reason to own some movies so you will always have them on hand. But it is relatively easy to buy only movies that have a broad appeal that are deserving of repeated viewings. Action/Adventure type movies always go over best when entertaining. I mean I don't think you want to put on something like Schindler's List when entertaining company!
My guests will have the opportunity to choose from titles such as Casino Royale, POTC, MI:3, etc.
ChrisInCali 06-23-07, 12:31 PM I buy only my select favorites, and I rent everything else.
danieledmunds 06-23-07, 12:54 PM I only buy HD movies that are classics and that I am going to watch again and again. I rent new releases on DVD and if I can't face sitting through it again, I don't buy it in HD. For example, I enjoyed The Prestige, it was one of the better movies released last year but I honestly wouldn't want to sit through it again in a hurry.
mike171979 06-23-07, 08:09 PM The funniest thing I've heard of lately is that both BD and HD DVD will fail to Video on Demand.
LOL
They already have it, its called Pay per View, and almost everyone hates it.
I don't care if they expand it so you can watch any movie made any time of day you want to, people will still reject it, simply because Pay Per View sucks.
I'd rather buy it, and be able to watch it an infinite amount of times.
Pay Per View is crap, Video on Demand is crap, Go HD-DVD or Blu Ray, I don't care who wins, because I have a PS3 and a HD-A2, so really who cares??????????
I buy, if it's something I might want to see again. I do still rent, but haven't from BB in forever, just too expensive for one frigging night, I'm not here to make the chairmans boat payment. The stores near me have a DVD vending machine, you can rent for $1 a night. SWEET. Still pick up titles there, very reasonable price. Not often though. Face it - if the move is any good, you buy it, and if it's bad, why bother renting? Renting goes into that few movies a year in the dead zone...
Sisko197 06-23-07, 09:41 PM I mostly buy mine, also.

For once, I agree with you. I wait for that day, too. Movie theaters are for those without home theaters, those with shouldn't have to use them to watch the newest movies.
AccordTR 06-23-07, 10:25 PM I havent rented in over 5 years, I mean why pay like 5 bucks to rent when I can just buy a used copy for a little more.

Ease of access. You tell me that when you're hanging out with some friends and want to watch a movie that you'll want to wait a day or so to get your movie mailed to you. Plus who wants to go down to the movie store and pay $5 for a movie when you can own the DVD for just a little more??? Hell, you can get them 4 for $20 at Blockbuster for their used new releases. Plus what happens when you want to watch a movie late at night and your netflix hasn't arrived yet??? what if you feel like watching one movie and 1/2 of the way through it you decide you want to watch something else??? Having a library is very convenient and gives you the ability to watch something again and again. Plus Netflix and BB online are absolutely horrible about re releases. They usually only carry one edition of a film. If an extended cut is released they only carry the original one. Hell they still only carry the non-anamorphic version of Mission Impossible when the Anamorphic transfer was released over a year ago. Same with the Extended cut of Kingdom of heaven. The extended cut is a hugely different movie and they don't even carry it. Also who wants to tie up their rentals with the second disc of a movie if you really feel like seeing some special features on Double disc sets. Netlfix/BB online is great for casual viewing but not for the Enthusiast at all.
having had a library (and still do) i can say there are very few movies when you're "hanging out with friends" they'd even want to rewatch. most people (not us here) don't watch movies a second time also.
so figure maybe 15% of your "library" at most would be made up of repeat watch movies that friends would be interested in.
or better put 9 out of 10 movies are better just to netflix.
also netflix (& other services) offers immediate download (SD for now)
the bottom line is "movie libraries" are going to be a thing of the past like CD libraries hanging on walls/racks.
all the discussion here can't change consumer evolution :)

I enjoy rewatching my favorite movies so buying is the best option for me and I have done so even from the VHS days. That allows me to just reach into my collection and watch whatever I feel like at anytime. I have always bought movies I liked either from previous viewings or respected reviews so I know I will rewatch them over a long period. I normally rent when the missus wants to watch a film I dont have or one I wouldnt buy for myself but I am quite happy to pass on a mediocre film.

Agreed. I've stocked up on a lot of movies in the past for this reason and 99% of the time when friends or co-workers are over we sit around and talk, play poker, play billiards , etc. but very rarely do we sit down and solely watch a movie ..unless it's on in the background as we're doing other activities around the house.
wormraper 06-26-07, 11:23 PM We must have different friends then. I have over 500 movies and we always find something to watch out of our collection at least once a week.
Depends on the price. For dvd I exclusively buy (previewed at hollywood w/lifetime guarantee). Doesn't cost much more than renting, and I always have 30-50 movies to choose from that I have not yet watched, at home.
When I jump on BR/HDDVD I'll probably do more renting, simply because paying $20-30/movie is a bit of a turnoff after averaging $6/movie
kevivoe 06-27-07, 08:32 AM I have now bought 10 HD DVD's in the past 6 days. There seems to be an avalanche of titles coming now. Oh, and not a single 1 from a B&M store!
I don't know about the rest of you but it is so easy to point, click and ship! online. And the pricing seems to be a touch better. Considering the gas savings it just might be.
