Hi:

I am just completing a pretty major HT and plan to build two backlit poster frames
for the entry. Questions:

Is there a special poster I need for backlit?

What is a good source for posters?

Does anyone make nice backlit frames that do not cost $200+ (and in some cases a totally criminal $800+)? I have a wood shop but if I can buy them, I will save some work. $100 is about what it would cost me for materials and I figure my labor is worth about $100.

Double-Sided Posters are printed on both sides and look best in Illuminated Cases. This is what you see at your local theater, and how some of them achieve an almost 3D effect. However, any printed poster will look good, just not as good.

You probably won't find a decent Illuminated Poster Case, especially one where you can easily change your poster, for less than $400.00. Here are some things to look out for:

* Construction- aluminum/metal or wood. I would stick with aluminum if you're not building them yourself
* UL Listed or not- you'll see some inexpensive boxes out there, but you may want to consider the piece of mind the UL tag carries.
* How many bulbs and what kind of bulbs are used- a consideration for even, bright, lighting
* How easy it is to change posters- look for a snap frame that flips open if you will be changing your posters somewhat frequently

If you decide to DIY, there are some helpful threads on this site.

Ditto to what Ken just said.

Lightboxes are relatively new so double sided posters started getting printed in ~1992. There have been a few re-releases of older movies but you won't find most classics DS. Most can be found very inexpensively. A search on eBay for DS in original posters will get you pretty far, but a lot of times you will have to search specific titles and look in the descriptions. There is a BIG difference between single sided and double sided posters as far as how they present. If you are going to drop 1k on 2 frames, drop the extra $5 and get double sided. If you are looking for anything in particular feel free to PM me. I have amassed quite a library.

There has actually been a lot of complaints abou the $200 ones so if you have the ability, DIY.
