If a 720p plasma always upscales any DVD so that the plasma can display the information at its native resolution of 720p, what's the point of an upscaling DVD player?

Most screens are never going to go above and beyond the call of duty for upscaling DVDs. They'll just do what is acceptable. A good quality dedicated upscaling DVD player will probably do a much better job. It all comes down to which scalar is better...the one in your TV or the one in your DVD player. Also, be aware that no DVD player (that I'm aware) will upscale to a plasma's native resolution of 768p so the 720p upscaled output from the DVD player would need to be further scaled to 768p in the TV. |
