Supports YouTube :)

YouTube will be on the iPhone as well. The number one reason most people need flash just went away. All that's left are obnoxious, flash using websites.

Hopefully we won't need to wait for Leopard Front Row to switch our YouTube preference to H.264

Wow, youtube support! What about support for tv tuners, blue-ray, hd-dvd, 5.1 pcm audio, true-hd, dts-ma, video_ts files, dvix, xvid, torrents, and remote internet access? I'm starting to think that Apple doesn't listen to their customers at all. And what about an SDK? How can Apple drop the ball on something this critical to the support of this device? Why won't they open up this appliance to 3rd party developers? Apple is agravating their developers for no reason.

(yes, this post is dripping in sarcasm but I thought I'd bring up these issues up before the Apple Criticizers).

(Yes I know your pulling our leg).

I bet that there are vastly more aTV customers (or would be ones) who want YouTube than Blu-ray or HD DVD. Remember -- by far the number one complaint about aTV: doesn't work with SD (4:3) TVs.

I think it's fine that YouTube is making the changes. But Flash is still incredibly useful on the web. Sure it can be misused, and it is all the time. But that is more of the realm of bad developers than bad technology (wildrock says as he peaks up from the AJAX backend he's tweaking that supports a Flash SlideShow demo he is working on).

(yes, this post is dripping in sarcasm but I thought I'd bring up these issues up before the Apple Criticizers).Andrew67, nice try. At least with appleTV, you can develop as you would for Mac OS X. You just have to jump through a few hoops first. And there is a BackRow Developer's Kit. (http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/BackRow_Developers%27_Kit) Once you do, you realize that you might as well develop for the Mini. Those hoops won't be as easy with the iPhone (it may well be unhackable), though that won't stop people from trying. Unfortunately, a hacked iPhone is going to be a lot more trouble for apple and at&t than a hacked appleTV.

I bet that there are vastly more aTV customers (or would be ones) who want YouTube than Blu-ray or HD DVD.If so, then it is because that is the market segment that Apple has chosen to target. Which doesn't portend much for the high end AV crowd that mostly seems to have panned the appleTV, outside of its roll as a iTunes media (as defined by Apple) extender.

Actually, I see this software update by Apple as its first test of how well its Software Update system works. Get the kinks out of the system for hopefully bigger and better things in the future--like some of the items Andrew67 referred to.

Of course there are plenty of useful flash websites, but it is IMHO the most abused technology on the Web. If the iPhone goes huge, I'm hoping that most of that abuse goes away.

Well, iTunes extender is where we are headed -- and when(if) that iTunes material gets to 720P and the increases in scope, I don't think there'll be all that much to complain about, so long as Apple keeps selling the Mac Mini or equivalent successor.

A good reason to use Camino as your www browser. It has flashblocker functionality built-in. You can start the flash applet if you want, but by default it's off.

Yup, it will be a nice option with some HD content to view with it. I'm not a fan of YouTube at all, but apparently I'm in the minority on that one. I go for the higher quality.. If we can get 720p+5.1 movies, I may re-think my Netflix subscription.

I haven't spent much time on YouTube. But, enough to know that generally speaking, the video quality of the stuff up there is pretty bad. That said, i was really surprised when I gave it a test drive on ATV. The few videos that I checked out looked a lot better than expected on my 62" Mits.

That's hardly the essence of YouTube: what makes it invaluable (as opposed to a pleasant diversion) are some of the pieces of television history with real historical significance, which are on YouTube.

Recent examples: Woody Allen interviewing Billy Graham in the 70s -- an amazing insight on how different religious leaders were back then from the ones today, as well as great theater.

Maria Callas' live opera performances (I had never seen her sing).

The complete presidential debate from the recent French election (as well as footage of the two candidates debating each other 20+ years ago).

Really this is stuff that was impossible for mere mortals to view before YouTube. Considering how much of our history is videotaped these days, YouTube becomes even more valuable than those NY Times microfilms I had to look at for high school and college papers.

YouTube has tremendous potential. The move to h.264 will improve the quality of video. And once people begin to see the value of YT as a video repository of items which may have historical worth, or contemporary value, then its significance grows. Sure, the family movie/blooper content tends to dilute the sense of importance of the archive, but on the other hand, where can you go to view videos of your favorite politician falling asleep during a hearing, or cussing out a videographer, or picking his nose in public? YT has the potential to unmask large segments of our society--in a way it is democracy in action. It is the Library of Congress of video clips. It is the first amendment in action. Give it time to mature.

The more I think about it, the more I understand why Google bought it. But it also worries me when I think of the great power it can wield. It has already changed many elections, and swung the balance of power in the Senate to the Democrats this last election cycle, by influencing two very close Senate races where the republican incumbent lost by a handful of votes (ex-Senators Burns and Allen) with very negative videos of the two being posted on YT and viewed by 10's of thousands of voters.

I think that there will be many more moves made by the likes of Apple and the appleTV to spread viewership and lend relevance to the service.

Old News

I don't understand the 911 conspiracy theories. Why worry about something that happened in the past when we should be worrying about contrails (http://youtube.com/watch?v=lBjDSNWiuKQ)!

I'll leave the YouTube commentary to others.

Besides YouTube, here's a bunch of other stuff that's in 1.1:
Now supports music browsing without interrupting playback. Hitting Menu while a song is playing takes you back to the previous menu and you can wander around your library without interrupting music playback. Current song has a little speaker icon next to it.
Finally...the aTV catches up with the 1st Gen iPod
New screensaver options: you can select albums, including last 12 months. You can also use the Photo slideshow style presentation (single image full screen with transitions and Ken Burns pan/zoom). And if you really love Apple, you can also select the built-in library of photos of Apple products that is used with unsync'd aTVs.
Okay, but I really like the cascading multiple pictures. Never fails to hypnotize...
Parental controls. Generic 4-digit passcode like vChip, but currently only can be used to block YouTube.
Seems clear they'll add other things to the block menu in the future. Explicit lyrics? R-rated movies?...
Sync Photos First. Actually, this is an iTunes 7.2 feature. If you click on your Apple TV in iTunes, then select the Photos tab, you'll see a new checkbox at the bottom that will force your photos to sync first.
This should be checked by default. If you ever wanted to get those just downloaded photos onto your Apple TV in a hurry and you happened to have bought some video, you'll understand why this is important. In theory, this could work with a 1.0 aTV. Perhaps some AVS'er who has not upgraded his aTV can verify?
You can select your iTunes Music Store country. All this seems to affect are those "top 10" items in Movies and Music.
What, still no purchasing? Though, getting closer it looks like...

We now return you to your regularly scheduled "YouTube is destroying society" thread :D

Errr...you're right. I was confusing aTV 1.0 with Front Row on my Mac Mini (which it replaced). Sorry.

I like the improvements made - wish they would:
1) Allow music to continue playing while browsing movies and other
2) allow iTunes to tag into and stream iPhoto library, so you don't have to sync these and change sources all the time...
