View Full Version : XBox 360 Media sharing over a router and bridge
mrkrispy 06-20-07, 01:25 PM I have been tinkering, searching, googling to no avail.
I am trying to setup my Xbox 360 so I can use media sharing with my laptop.
I have a laptop wireless to Linksys wifi router wireless to Buffalo wireless bridge cat5 to my xbox 360. Xbox live works great, multiplayer gaming works great.
I have WMP11, setup the file sharing, and my xbox isn't showing up in the WMP file sharing window. I have tried turning my WMP11 on, then the Xbox. Tried the opposite. I still can't see the xbox.
Anyone figure out how to get media sharing to work in this situation?
Shizelbs 06-20-07, 02:22 PM I haven't set up my laptop for sharing yet, but I will try it tonight.
mboojigga 06-20-07, 03:43 PM I am running Vista and I see everything on my network. My other 2 computers and 360 and HD-Directv DVR. I am wireless for the laptop and 360 running through D-link 655. If you are running XP I can understand the frustration of seeing your 360 but have you gone through the setup on the 360 and verify media connection is working?
mrkrispy 06-20-07, 04:09 PM I am running XP. When I look on the 360 I get a "fail" for the connection to the PC. It was my understanding you have to allow the xbox 360 in WMP11 first to get a connection. I can't get that far.
You probably have TCP and UDP ports blocked by a personal firewall. Mine was the same way until I opened up the ports. Try these settings (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/sharing.mspx#q20_7) and it should work. If not, then there's some other blocking going on.
mrkrispy 06-20-07, 04:50 PM I have Sygate firewall running but I never got a popup from it alerting me about the ports getting lit. I will try turning it off and see if it works. Thanks.
mboojigga 06-21-07, 08:15 AM yes turn all firewalls off then try and connect after you have connect then you can turn your firwalls back on. Your correct you first need to allow the 360 to connect to WMP11 then connect through the 360.
mrkrispy 06-21-07, 11:42 AM that did the trick! I turned off Sygate, it took a few minutes for WMP11 to find the Xbox. I verified my media would stream. I turned the firewall back on and it kept working. Woohoo
thanks!
mrkrispy 07-01-07, 02:58 PM ok, it works when I have the WMP11 on, and Xbox on, then turn off the Sygate firewall and back on. To avoid this I will have to go in the Sygate and enter all the port forwarding stuff just like I had to on my router.
mrkrispy 02-22-08, 07:04 PM big bump! I was never able to figure all of this out, I entered a bunch of port forwarding stuff in my router and in my firewall software but it still doesn't work consistently. Any other sygate users???
bundaman 02-23-08, 05:56 PM Krispy,
There is a MS patch for this exact problem that I downloaded and installed and everything was fine. This is discussed thoroughly on the xbox live forums. There is a solution to to this problem. Good luck

nukem1r 02-25-08, 01:46 AM bundaman, can you post a link to the patch / and the forum topic..ive been searching for a bit and cant find either.
Im just having an issue where the xbox sees my drive(in networked computer) and i can dig down into the folders
example of my folder break down
I drive >
battlestar gallactica>
season1(folder)
season2(folder)
season3(folder)
but when i go to the folders it goes to the thinking wheel and just sits there...it was working fine one night and i finished the season 2 folder..went to the season 3 and it wouldnt go...tried to go back and play season 2 and had the same issue..
Ive been reseting and reconnecting things for a week now, and nothing is working.
any ideas?
thanks
properbostonian 02-25-08, 11:53 AM I have XP as well and ran into similar problems.
I simply installed the Zune softball on both my desktop and laptop, shared the appropriate folders, told Zune I use a 360 and everything worked automatically. It was ridiculously easy.
