Hi all,

Smallish room: about 11x15 or so. Back wall doesn't exist: it is "open" to the other side of the L in the basement. Most likely the Onkyo 805 receiver, MythosFour speakers, MythosThree center, and MythosGems for rear.

I'm trying to pick between a Hsu sub and the SuperCube III. I have a Hsu VTF-2 that I got about 6.5 years ago in my family room and it's been great. We got my parents the VTF-3, and that is even better it seems (don't remember which version).

The SuperCube III seems decent in the store.

I like good bass, especially in movies - and most of what I watch in this new location will be movies, TV, and sports (some music, but not a lot). But I don't want it to be too overpowering. I'm afraid that a Hsu sub in that location may be a bit much?

So, knowing all that, what would you recommend? The footprint of the SuperCube is smaller which could be a benefit as well...but not sure.

Any thoughts appreciated!

1. You've been very happy with HSU products in the past.

2. The room isn't 11x15 if it is open to another space. The entire connected area will count as volume in regards to the sub's performance.

3. When properly level matched to your mains "overpowering" isn't an issue. You can always turn a good sub down but you can't always turn a bad sub up.

Thanks Fnord...good points. I wasn't aware of #2. Well, I kind of was, but didn't give it much thought as I"ve been so concentrated on where my speaker setup will be that the 11x15 numbers are stuck in my head.

For # 3 - I'm not too familiar with level matching. Are you talking about proper setup using the SPL meters, etc?

If I can figure out # 3, I think the decision will simply come down to footprint size. I'm leaning towards the Hsu though.

Yep.

Keep in mind that the new MkIII HSUs are even more potent than their predecessors so you might be able to go with a smaller (and cheaper) model than before.

Shoot HSU an email detailing your room and your needs and see what recomendations they make for you.

I own a SuperCube Reference. That would be too much for a room that you described. I would go with a DT SuperCube I and tweek the volume afterwards. You'll be happy!

There is no such thing as too much!

Stupid question. In my room which is simular to the one described by the OP, I have a SuperCube 3. My home theater though is only in an area that is 12x12. My sub sits next to our couch under an end table. I feel that since we are so close to the sub, we don't need more output. Am I wrong assuming that? I am no more than 3 feet from the sub.

I'm not sure I understand the question.

If you are happy with the sub you have currently and don't feel you need more...than how could that be wrong?

If you're satisfied you shouldn't feel forced to upgrade.
