View Full Version : List of films shown in HD ? A_Dude 06-21-07, 08:37 PM Is there a web page that lists all films that have been shown in true HD ? afiggatt 06-21-07, 11:23 PM That would be a very long list. Between HDNet Movies, the premium movie channels, the other national HD channels, the Voom channels, and the broadcast networks, the total of movies shown in true HD somewhere by now must be on the order of several thousand (?) movies. ABCTV99 06-22-07, 01:04 AM That would be a very long list. I dunno about several thousand but defintely in the hundreds. eric.exe 06-22-07, 04:16 AM A better list would probably be what movies have not been shown in HD, anywhere. For example, I believe Jurassic Park has never been broadcast in HD, any where in the world, ever. All other Steve Spielberg movies have been I believe. afiggatt 06-22-07, 11:28 AM I dunno about several thousand but defintely in the hundreds. No, I would go with several thousand at least. Just for kicks, I went to the HDnet website and saved the list of movies to be shown in the remainder of June and July. If my count (using search & replace to do the count) is correct, HDNet Movies alone will be showing 126 different movies in true HD over the next 5 to 6 weeks. HDNet Movies alone probably has shown well over a 1000 different movies in HD since they started. Add in all the other HD cable channels and the broadcast networks, we are clearly in the ballpark of multiple thousands of movies that have been telecined to HD. There are some prominent movies that have not been shown in HD yet and a lot of those that have been which could use to be re-telecined with newer equipment, but the number that have been shown in HD is pretty big by now. Star56 06-22-07, 03:38 PM My personal collection numbers in the hundreds (DVHS recordings, DVHS releases, Blu Ray, HD DVD)...all OAR and HD. Gotta be in the thousands. A_Dude 06-22-07, 03:44 PM Several thousand movies is a tiny fraction of all movies... John Mason 06-23-07, 10:09 AM One way to whittle that list down, for anyone that's Internet energetic, is to create an upcoming HD showing list only for the American Film Institute's top 100 films. This recent post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=864728) outlines ways to access the 2007 list, shown in snippets on CBS this week. -- John A_Dude 06-23-07, 04:42 PM IMDB says:378,341 movies released theatrically PS Regarding the AFI list, there are some good films on the list, but it is rather dubious. The fact that 40% of the list changed in the 10th Annivery version shows how dubious a concept the list has turned out to be. Furthermore, since the concept of the list is to cover all films from day one, many of the films are black-and-white. While increased resolution does help such films, HD doesn't help them as much as it helps color films, because (to my eye and that of some other viewers) the increase in color resolution of HD makes more of a difference than just image resolution. For example, I watched "Manchurian Candidate" (the 1962 black-and-white version) in HD recently, and it was a little better than the DVD version, but not greatly better. Someone provided this wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI%27s_100_Years..._100_Movies_%2810th_Anniversary_Edition% 29#Changes_from_the_previous_list) within my linked post above, which indicates 23 films were replaced in the top-ranked 100 from ~10 years ago. The other changes were up or down rankings from a decade earlier. For additional variety, there's the National Film Registry, and HDNet shows links to this list ~1/2 down the page for its August movie list (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=865390)--plus the NFR movies they're airing. -- John Josh Z 06-24-07, 05:01 PM For example, I believe Jurassic Park has never been broadcast in HD, any where in the world, ever. Jurassic Park was available on the MUSE/HiVision analog High Definition laserdisc format in Japan. I'm pretty sure it was broadcast in HD there as well. http://www.cinedrome.ch/hometheater/hdtv/muse/reviews/Jurassic%20Park/Jurassicpark.html |
