View Full Version : Need more soccer in HD: any rumors on GolTV?
Nope, can't get them down here. I've always been jealous of how you gets get all our channels, but we can't get any of Canada's. I'd love to get the CBC lol.
What channels? They do not get any US RSN channels. Rogers Sportsnet is Canadian RSN. They do not get ESPN but TSN carries some of ESPN programming. You will not get CBC due to rights issues. They would have to create totally new CBC channel just for US.
my cousins in buffalo get CBC. why not complain to the american cable companies and request it? your laws of watching our networks are less strict than we getting us feeds. Because he is close to the border and they are allowed to carry signal that you can pick up OTA. Anywhere else CBC is not an option because of licensing rights. CBC would have to create totally new US version that could only show Canadian programs. They probably could not even show HNIC.
Can Americans get Rogers Sportsnet Ontario, Pacific, West and Central? or are these HD channels strictly CanEHdian?
What's the difference. Rogers does not show any more soccer than ESPN. ESPN carries in HD EPL matches that Rogers carries plus even more sometimes as they show games on Mondays.
This thread is about full time soccer channels going HD.
commodore_dude 01-05-10, 01:19 PM Looks like Setanta USA will be acquired by Fox:
http://www.epltalk.com/breaking-fox-sports-international-in-talks-to-acquire-setanta-sports/14489
Presumably Setanta will get shut down and their rights sublicensed to someone like Versus or GolTV (since I have Dish I have no idea what Gol is showing this year or if they'd have any room for more matches), hopefully if anything is left they can show it on FSN instead of infomercials on weekend mornings. Anything going to Versus or FSN (I doubt ESPN has the time slots for much more soccer) would of course mean potentially more in HD, or in the unlikely event Setanta just becomes FSC 2 there would at least be instant capability for HD if not a channel slot with providers.
roberthalton 01-05-10, 05:19 PM Well that's not great, but the Setanta feed was horrible for 14.99 per month.
canceled my sub - added HBO for Big Love.
taz291819 01-05-10, 06:19 PM Hey, at least you'll get the World Cup in 3D this year. I'm not a soccer fan, but I know I'll be watching.
Civrock 01-06-10, 06:08 AM As mentioned above... there have been rumors the past couple days about Fox Sports International getting ready to acquire Setanta Sports US. Today there's another indication supporting this, apparently Fox trademarked the name "Fox Soccer Plus" (also "Fox Soccer +") recently for both television and internet usage and registered the domain "foxsoccerplus.com" (no server yet).
More here: http://www.epltalk.com
The rumored (but pretty much certain at this point) acquisition of Setanta US may have directly caused the delay of the FSC HD launch on DirecTV (as an example) due to the upcoming announcement, likely within 36 hours.
machpost 01-06-10, 07:20 AM Can Americans get Rogers Sportsnet Ontario, Pacific, West and Central? or are these HD channels strictly CanEHdian?
The only Canadian sports programming we receive here are simulcasts of some NHL games from TSN, RDS, Rogers Sportsnet and CBC on NHL Network and through the NHL Center Ice package. At least the hockey on NHL Network, including Hockey Night in Canada, is in HD. My family near the Detroit-Windsor area can't even get CBC-HD.
With that announcement I was hoping Fox Sports World would make a comeback. Setanta has an absurd amount of Rugby that I would love to watch in HD. I just hope Fox doesn't ditch the Rugby.

I don't know if I am ready for soccer in 3D yet... ;)
But yes, the World Cup in HD will be glorious.

Those of us who went through the Fox World Sports to Fox Soccer Channel transition a few years back all remember the short shrift rugby got back then. If this deal goes through, I have a feeling we have seen the last of rugby on TV for a while. Which sucks, what with the Heineken Cup, Magners League, and Guinness Premiership running at the moment, and of course the Six Nations and Super 14 starting soon.

Sounds a lot like Fox's acquisition of Speedvision in 2001, when all the great rallying/sports/touring car racing was unceremoniously replaced with nearly 24/7 NASCAR. So I wouldn't expect them to have much regard for rugby or any other non-soccer sport on there, unfortunately.

+1
I think our only hope is that another (most likely obscure) channel picks up the rights to the various rugby leagues.
Otherwise...anywhere online that streams rugby live??

Rugbyzone has the online subscription rights to most Sanzar rugby matches in the US market. Problem is that the Six Nations, and Heineken Cup are not available on Rugbyzone in the US region. I used to mix and match Setanta and Rugbyzone to get full coverage of everything I wanted to see. Not sure what will happen now.

Good to know, thanks.
I would think that there would be at least a small market for Rugby viewing in the U.S. and that some station would pick up the broadcast rights for cheap. Guess we'll see.
Well hopefully the ESPN3 rumors are true. It's supposed to be a soccer and world sport focused channel and that hopefully ESPN will pick up the Rugby. It's a longshot but that's all we have I guess sadly. :(
IIRC, ESPN did pick up the Aussie Rules Football rights from Setanta so maybe Rugby will come that way too if the ESPN3 rumors don't pan out.

Fox Soccer Kicks Off Premium, HD Channel Companion On March 1
Fox Soccer Plus Will Include BPL, Champions League Rights Previously Held By Setanta Sports
By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, January 12, 2010
Fox Soccer Channel will add a high-definition teammate come March.
Positioned at a complement to Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Soccer Plus will bow in the HD format as a premium service, kicking off March 1.
Fox Soccer Plus will present an array of Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League, England's FA Cup and Italy's Serie A matches, properties to which FSC already holds TV rights to in the U.S.
Chelsea striker Didier DrogbaRelative to the BPL and UEFA Champions League content, Fox Soccer Plus will feature matches that were previously ticketed for Setanta Sports USA. FSC has been sublicensing those properties to the premium service. Setanta's rights will revert entirely to FSC and Fox Soccer Plus at the end of February. Setanta USA's Web site no longer lists those properties under its "Our Sports" heading.
Sources had indicated that Fox Soccer was negotiating to secure rights or purchase Setanta outright.
Executives at Setanta, which counts DirecTV, Dish Network, AT&T U-verse, Verizon FiOS and RCN as affiliates, as well as Comcast and Cox in select markets, were not immediately available at press time.
Fox Soccer Plus will afford distributors flexibility to position the service as a stand-alone premium channel, or to be part of a sports tier.
"We are committed to bringing the best world-class soccer experience to fans,"said David Nathanson, general manager and executive vice president of FSC, in a statement. "As America's interest in the world's game is increasing, the launch of Fox Soccer Plus will complement and enhance our current programming on Fox Soccer Channel. Fox Soccer Plus builds on our position as the preferred television destination for American soccer fans as well as expatriates who want to keep in touch with their home teams."
The launch of Fox Soccer Plus will come as both Serie A and the BPL are moving toward the latter stages of their seasons and while the FA quarterfinals are scheduled to take place. FSC officials said a schedule with teams and match times would be determined in the weeks ahead.
FSC and Setanta have been on the same side on a number of properties. At Cable Show 2008 in New Orleans, the parties announced they had acquired the U.S. rights to the FA Cup, the oldest knockout competition in England.
Last spring, Fox Sports International and Setanta gained U.S. rights to the UEFA Champions League for the 2010-11 through 2012-13 competitions, ending a 15-year run by ESPN.
But on the eve of BPL kicking off its current season last August, FSC transferred the rights to 48 of the league's matches, which had been assigned to Setanta, to ESPN. Earlier, ESPN had picked up 46 BPL matches in the U.K. from Setanta Sports in the U.K., when the programmer fell into receivership in that nation.
Last fall, Fox Sports International secured the U.S. BPL rights for the 2010-11 through the 2012-13 seasons, but has yet to announce any sublicensing deals.
commodore_dude 01-12-10, 02:07 PM Interesting... hopefully it'll be included on sports tiers rather than cost as much as that just by itself.
chad473 01-12-10, 03:48 PM I don't care what tier it is, I just hope comcast carries it in my area. We aren't getting world of more stuff until late spring/summer though so I'd put those chances at roughly zero.
sansri88 01-12-10, 07:47 PM I can't wait for this, we went through cavalry so we have plenty of room. Here's to hoping Comcast carries FSC+ HD the day it launches as well as adding FSC HD at the same time (if not earlier).
ssabripo 01-14-10, 07:50 AM any idea if GolTV and ESPNDeportes will be coming in HD any time soon?
it sucks that I have pretty much every package on D*, and I only get them in standard def with the exception of the occassional saturday morning EPL game on ESPN2
dan_o_00 01-16-10, 03:46 PM Hoping that Charter will be picking up FSC+ soon, as well as the HD version.
mx6bfast 01-16-10, 04:16 PM So is the Plus channel gonna be the HD version of FSC, or are there going to be 2 HD channels, FSC HD and FSC HD+?

rustycruiser 01-21-10, 11:56 PM For those looking for or worried about losing rugby coverage with the demise of Setanta, BBC America is going to be showing (partial) coverage of the 2010 6 Nations live:
BBC AMERICA TO BROADCAST LIVE SIX NATIONS RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP
RBS Six Nations Championship, one of Europe's biggest annual sporting events, will broadcast live on BBC AMERICA starting Saturday, February 6. The cable channel will broadcast five live matches over the course of the legendary rugby tournament featuring England, Ireland, France, Scotland, Wales and Italy vying for the championship. Last year's winner, Ireland, clinched the championship after a thrilling victory that came down to a missed penalty by Wales, giving the Irish the 17-15 win. BBC AMERICA's first match will be from London, where England faces off against Wales, on Saturday, February 6, 12:00 p.m. ET / 9:00 a.m. PT.
The RBS Six Nations Championship will hold this year's matches in London, Paris, Dublin, Rome, Edinburgh and Cardiff. The home field advantage for the match alternates from year to year between each country's teams. The tournament has every team playing each other once - with two points being awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. The Six Nations has a total of fifteen matches and the team with the most points wins. Victory in every game results in the team being given the title "Grand Slam" winner. There is also the title of "Triple Crown" competed for each year, which is awarded if a team from the four Home Nations (England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) beats each of the other three Home Nations.
Last year, Ireland ended a 61-year wait for a "Grand Slam" with its championship that also was a "Triple Crown." This year, can England return to its glory days? Will Wales climb back to the top after a disappointing fourth place finish last year? With the most victories in the past decade (five), can France once again dominate? Or is it in the cards for Scotland and Italy to win their first Six Nations championships?
This acclaimed tournament began in 1883 as the Home Nations Championship but was renamed the Five Nations when France joined in 1910. Italy joined the tournament ten years ago, making it the Six Nations.

rustycruiser 01-22-10, 11:07 AM Good find! Any word on HD? Not sure if anyone has BBC America in HD or whether the matches are being produced in HD???
AFAIK, Time Warner cable in NY is the only provider to carry BBC America HD. The matches at Murrayfield, Twickenham, and Millennium have been produced in HD by the BBC for the last three years. Canalsports in France has also produced their games in HD. Not so sure about the Irish and Italian based games. In fact, this year the BBC is also producing a number of games in 3D.

CNiles3806 01-28-10, 01:19 PM Has Fox Soccer Channel began broadcasting in High Definition. On my system here in Cablevision I see it saying FSC HD in the logo, instead of just FSC as in the past.
Guess they flipped the switch this afternoon.
Moderators Notes:
- Topic title changed to reflect the demise of Setanta Sports, and Fox Soccer Channel going HD.
- A number of recent (last week or so) FSC HD posts have been moved to the FSC HD topic: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1222269

ROFL, couldn't have said it better. Out of the frying pan into the fire.
Just when one obstacle is cleared another pops up with the carriers dragging their lame arses to make the additions. Its like pulling teeth with some of these carriers to make additions.
My carrier Cablevision in NYC hasn't said a word about carrying Fox Soccer Channel HD as yet and doesn't seem too interested from my calls to them.

Any of it stretched?
I've only been able to catch their GolTV News program so far, and none of it is stretched. The show itself is pillar boxed but their ESPN-like bottom line news ticker is definitely formatted for 16:9 (the text is nice and sharp).
The guide says they were supposed to be replaying the Sounders / Metapan CCL game from last night right now, so I was going to see what that looked like, but it's all GolTV news programming right now.
*Update* they're showing a Barcelona / Sevilla match from May of this year right now, in glorious HD. Woot!

GolTV provides Soccer from around the world. I am curious as to how much of the international coverage is in HD (EPL, Columbian, Brazilian, etc.)
One of the live Brazilian games I saw today was full HD, but a replay of a game earlier this year/season was not. The Columbian game on right now is not HD, but the replay I saw from La Ligua the other day and the pre-season Bundesliga game today were both full HD.
I'd bet most of the European leagues will be full HD, and those from south/central America will be 50/50.
Pleasantly surprised to see the Chivas game in HD in Telefutura HD.
I don't think Telemundo has shown any game in HD from the Mexican League.
Quality is pretty good here through Comcast.
StonesCat 08-07-10, 11:45 PM Yeah, between them and Galavision, they show a good number of HD games, I've noticed since the World Cup.
boltsfan21 08-11-10, 10:14 AM ESPN and Fox have finally reached an agreement for the upcoming rights to the EPL season. Full details haven't been announced yet. ESPN will air the Spurs/Man City game on Saturday and Man U/Newcastle game on Monday. Both in HD.
Fox Soccer Channel announced they will air up to 304 matches during the 2010/11 season on Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Soccer Plus. For the first time, all EPL games will be shown in HD.
D* will be showing every single game of the UEFA Champions League from the playoff round on Aug 17 to the final in May. The games will be shown on Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Soccer Plus, Fox Sports Networks, and D*'s own channels like last season. The Europa League coverage will start with the group stage on Sept 16 and continue through D*'s exclusive 153 game coverage to the final on May 18, 2011. Goltv will also be airing the Europa League this season as well. D* will have the Soccer Mix Channel again this season in both HD and SD.
D* announced they will broadcast at least 114 exclusive La Liga games during the upcoming season. No word if those games will be in HD.
