I am in the market for a good DVD/VCR combo with a tuner (at a reasonable price)...
I plan to use my projector as my primary source of TV, for now, till I can scrape together a real TV

I just relocated and due to the distance was very limited on what I could take... so out of my A/V equipment the only thing I brought is my projector that has a HDMI port... I plan on getting a dish from the mainland to pick up one up with HD stuff...

I have been doing research on DVD/VCR combo's and what I have found is that Sony sucks due to copyright chip issues... and that there is very little info out there about these things...

Can anyone help... Please!!!

Can you clarify a few things?

Do you want a DVD RECORDER/VHS combo unit or a DVD PLAYER/VHS Combo Unit (I assume DVD recorder since you are asking the question here but just want to be sure)?

Do you want an ATSC/QAM tuner or just Analog tuner (though they are no longer making analog tuner only units for sale in the US there is some stock remaining)? I ask this question because the analog only units appear to be more robust, while the new digital/analog units are being reported to have many glitches. If you can live with an analog only tuner, then I would go for one of the late model Panny's if you can find them on clearance in the stores or online (Model number DMR-ES36 or 46 - Panny's with model numbers DMR-EZXX vs. ESXX have digital tuners and Panny Model Numbers in the 30'S and 40'S have VHS decks and the 40'S have HDMI output with upconversion). One good, but expensive overall unit is the Panny DMR-EH75V it has VHS/DVD recorder with HDMI output AND a built-in HDD which makes editing before commiting a recording to disc a lot easier. It runs for between $300 (OPEN BOX) to $450 (NEW) if you can still find it. The other combo units are in the $250 range.
