Your link doesn't work (I believe that links to online retailers are blocked by AVS Forum). My 640H does not have any "black rectangular areas in the middle at the top of the back of the machine".

The black connectors in the top center look like 21-pin SCART connectors. If so, it's probably a PAL unit for the EU or Australia. You'd need to know if it might be an "international" unit that includes a NTSC tuner as well as the PAL tuner it probably has for sure if the connectors are SCART.

That is definitely not a picture of the back of a Pio 640. It might be the 540 (I don't have one to tell), but it's not the 640 for sure.

I Bought the same model 540 from same seller as you are looking at and his photos are the european model . This unit is made in Canada and works the same as the 640 minus the usb ports and the 80gig instead of the 160. also the firmware upgrade for the 640 is also good on the 540.
btw this is a wonderful recorder the pq is excellent and i'm using an s video connector.
go for it you won't be sorry.
