Does anyone have any details on the chipset and overall quality of the Samsung DVD-HD1080P7? I think this is a new unit.
I see Samsung's BD-P1200 was the best reviewed in 2007 by DVD Benchmark on hometheaterhifi.com due to it's inclusion of the Reon video-processing chip.
So, I'm hoping to hear the DVD-HD1080P7 has all the same guts (incl. Reon) except the BD capability !!
Anyone?
Thanks in advance!
Search here. This player is 6 months old and uses Zoran chipset. There is NO Reon or HQV. Press release comment was a typo or intentionally deceiving to boost sales. There is a main thread here on this player. It's average 1080p player. Mediatek chipset is a better chipset for the budget players. To get Reon you'll need Tosh HD XA2, Samsung BD 1200, Denon SD (but expensive) upconverting players. You can't find HQV on a $100 player (at least not yet).

That's good to know. Sorry, I missed the actual thread for this unit...even did a Google search of the Forum.
I guess it's Oppo or Philips. I suppose I'll check out the Philips first, since I can get it locally.
Any other good upconverters under $200 for HDMI 1080p/60hz?
Thanks

I liked the Samsung better than the Philips. You should check out the Pioneer dv-400v. But if you're willing to spend around $200, then you might as well get the Oppo 981 for $230.
Also, if you need an optical out, the Philips and Pioneer don't have one.

Is it fair to say that PQ will be the best on the Oppo of the ones mentioned, with exception of possible "Macroblocking" which may or may not be noticeable? Or do these other models also have this Macroblocking in addition to other artifacts?
Thanks !

The Oppo is the gold standard. My dad has one and the picture looks great, but he lives in a different state, so I can't do a side-by-side comparison with my Samsung. But I would have to say that Oppo PQ was better than Samsung's.
My understanding about the macroblocking is that it has something to with the use of the Faroudja chip in the Oppo and if your TV also has a Faroudja chip.

This is a bad dvd player -- Samsung 1080p7. Why? It was released to the general public without thorough testing. It was rushed to consumers in response to Panasonic's own 1080p upconvert player.
Problems I noticed on this dvd player:
1. It would freeze often, whether you're changing settings in the menu or even while playing a dvd and using the function keys, like fast foward or even getting back to the main menu.
2. You have to unplug the set to restart it; a fire hazard in my opinion. Unplugging then replugging the power cord often is dangerous.
3. Improper display at 1080p. No other 1080p player leaves a odd line at the very bottom of the screen. Set your tv to Just Scan mode, referred to as 1:1 mapping and then play any dvd on your 1080p tv - you notice a line at the bottom that shouldn't be there.
4. Not a region free player like most dvd players on the market. Meaning, some dvd's aren't playable on this unit.
5. Inferior video processor compared to a less expensive player, the Philips 5982. The Panasonic 54K is even better than the 1080p7.
6. Jitter while credits roll.
With all that said, I don't recommend the Samsung 1080p7 for anyone interested in a 1080p upconvert dvd player. Not worth the $99.99 retail price that Samsung set. This is clearly a piece of junk and needs to be improved.

And RickDriver said a few posts up

Somebody needs to get their camera out and try and take some some screen grabs of these various players in action.

Those are the only two problem i noticed on my unit when i got it. I'm glad the the latest firmware update has resolved those issues on my unit.
