Hello,
I recently got an optoma HD70 for watching movies from my PC. Problem is, PC is 5-10 meters from the ceiling-mounted projector and my PC has only one VGA out and no DVI out. And when I connect a 10 meter VGA cable, the picture doesn't look as clear as it should be. (projector also sometimes finds it hard to get the 1024/768 res and shifts through a bunch of lower resolutions.
1)should I get an amplifying VGA splitter? Will it really amplify a clear signal this distance?
2)should I get a new graphic card with DVI out? Will the DVI signal pass this distance with a good signal?
3) should I get a card with DVI out, connect a VGA adapter and use my (already bought) VGA cable?
4)is there any way to connect the HD70 wireless?
Please help! I really want to get my money's worth out of this projector and I'm currently not. Doesn;t anyone else have a ceiling-mounted projector that's distant from the source?
Thanx a lot,
Shim

1. No
2. Possibly, if you are not going to use your HD70's HDMI for something else.
3. Not if the cable is the problem
4. Not without spending a lot more money

5. Get a better quality cable, longer runs degrade the signal.

Hope this helps

My xbox360 hooked through the VGA also shifts through different resolutions (usually lower ones), I'm not to sure what thats about but it sounds like its not a problem with having a long cord as the xbox one isn't that long.

If a VGA splitter can't pass a decent signal from only 15 to 30 feet, what the hell are they good for? I have heard about cases where a VGA splitter did a good job...
But anyway, I still only have one VGA output on my card and no DVI, so I will need to get a VGA splitter or a card with two outputs, so the answer isn't just getting a better VGA cable...
Which one has more of a chance of working? Getting a splitter (amplifying) and a good VGA cable or getting a new card with two VGA outputs and a good VGA cable? The card or a splitter? Which one? I need two outputs. BTW I won't be using the HDMI of the projector on anything else but a 15-30 foot long DVI cable is more and more money...
Ok, I'm beginning to bore myself.
Pease Help :)

I have my PC (w/ an X800XT AIW graphics card) hooked up with a 25' DVI cable w/ a DVI-HDMI adapter. My old projector had a DVI input, and my new one has HDMI only, so I just bought a $10 adapter to make the change and re-used the same cable. The picture is perfect. I also have my CRT monitor hooked up with the a standard VGA cable, and have the computer configured so that I can press a hot key to switch between the CRT monitor, and my LCD projector. I don't like to run them both at the same time...it really makes a difference if your gaming.

I'd recommend getting a new graphics card and going digital w/ DVI-HDMI. Then you don't have to worry about it having a better chance of working...it should just work. You can get the cable and graphics card fairly cheap on the internet if you search. If you go to a retail store you will pay way too much for the cable.

Looking at the spec sheet for your projector I don't see where you have a DVI input. This means you would need to use a DVI-HDMI cable or a DVI cable and a cheap adapter like I'm using.

I have a 30ft VGA and the picture looks perfect.. I also have a 35ft run of Component and the picture is perfect..

I have a 50ft vga cable and don't have any noticeable picture issues; running 1280x720p res.

I would imagine if you vid card is old enough to not have dvi out that you will probably see an improvement in output quality just by upgrading your card. If I had DVI on my projector and only required 30ft of cable, I wold definitely use DVI or HDMI.

Compare your long cable to a short one and see if the cable is the problem.

ok guys
thanks so much for all of the input. It seems that some people use VGA and it works, but that it would be better to upgrade my card ( which is a geforce FX5200 ) to one with a DVI output; then draw a DVI-HDMI cable to the projector. I actually tried a VGA splitter and it seems to work, but knowing there's a chance to get an even better, clearer signal with DVI, makes it worth a try.
So thanks again.
