First of all, I don't care that it's really old. This is a bedroom unit on a 27" CRT. The problem is, it can't transition layers, or I believe that to be the problem. When watching most DVDs, it will get to what appears to be a layer boundary and will freeze, then the screen will go black and it will be unresponsive. I have to turn it off. This makes watching DVDs in that room pretty much a dead subject, unless I bring in the PS2.

Is that a problem with the model itself, or is it a sign of downhill performance?
