View Full Version : "Streets Of Fire" on HD DVD - WHY???
dougb415 06-25-07, 10:57 AM This movie was semi-horrible when I rented it back in the 80s, so for a lark I rented it again a few weeks so my wife could see it. She calls it the worst movie she has ever seen. I won't go quite that far, but....
So why in the world is this POS being released in HD DVD?

One of the ways a studio hopes to make money is to release catalogue titles that didn't make much money or are low priced right now in order to make some money by preying on the addiction of early adopters to grab whatever they can get their hands on that's why.
Vidmaven 06-25-07, 11:08 AM 2 words "Diane Lane" in HD. That's about the only reason I can see.

Not everyone shares your opinion.
I happen to love this movie. I have the soundtrack on my iPod. :)
Now bringing out The Watcher on HD-DVD... that's a better question.
The movie is a camp classic. It has a sizable audience.
I'm really looking forward to it. I rented it from netflix when I heard it was coming out on HD-DVD and was pleasantly surprised. I love the end song! I second the comment about 'the watcher'... ugh...

First, as someone else pointed out, not everyone shares your opinion.
Second, you remembered it being "semi-horrible" so you had to go rent it 20 years later so your wife could see just how "semi-horrible" it was? If everyone is just like you (which you may think is reality given your post) and contribute money to pay to see movies they don't like, then it doesn't matter whether it's a POS or not.
In fact, YOU are one of the reasons it's being released. You're helping to keep it popular after all these years. I love the movie, so thanks for your support!

Umm, okay. I guess this really is a case of "to each their own". I watched the movie back when it came out because of the hit single (still like the song) and because of Diane Lane (go figure). 20+ yrs later she just looks like she has an attitude and 'mall hair'. Michael Pare... well, at least he was watchable in "Eddie & The Cruisers".
Was Amy Madigan actually working from a script, or was she just told to 'out-bad' Michael Pare? For that matter was there a script for this movie, and if so, what is the plot?
Jim Steinman wrote those songs? That explains why they sounded like they should've been on a Meatloaf album.
All IMO, of course :)
Anyway, for those of you into this movie - enjoy!
Marlowe13 06-25-07, 02:41 PM Everyone has their opinion. IMO, this is far from a great movie, but I like it. it also gets extra credit for a non-standard concept. That said, I am probably not going to re-buy this (I have it on SD DVD), though I could change my mind depending on reviews.
dougb415 06-25-07, 02:41 PM Second, you remembered it being "semi-horrible" so you had to go rent it 20 years later so your wife could see just how "semi-horrible" it was?
Not at all. We were watching a Hall & Oates concert on MHD, and they played the hit single from the movie. My wife and I started talking about it and she said she had never seen Streets Of Fire. We rented it from Netflix.
TheSimplePanda 06-25-07, 02:47 PM Blu-Ray has Little Man, there is nothing HD DVD can do to sink to that pathetic low.

Those all aren't good imo. But nothing can compete with the humiliation of "Little Man" I am very grateful that I don't own the format that associates me with "Little Man" ::shudders:: That's like building a $3000 top of the line PC to play an emulation of E.T. from the Atari or Superman 64
Lee Stewart 06-25-07, 03:17 PM Ever heard of Joel Silver? The action master producer.
He produced Streets of Fire. I believe it was his second effort after Xanadu (not sure)
Trackman 06-25-07, 03:48 PM The soundtrack is great - CBS used several of the songs for years as background for NFL broadcasts.
Another treat is the dancing of Marine (sp?) Jahan in Torchy's - she is the pro dancer who did all the hot scenes in Flashdance.
I like the movie.

So you don't own a DVD player then...
Like it or not, if HD-DVD makes a miraculous comeback and becomes the next generation standard there will be tons of awful movies on the format, Little Man included.
If that happens, I'll expect you post a message indicating that you're proudly no longer associated with HD-DVD.
I mean - you wouldn't want to risk having to rent "Little Man", after all... even by accident.

Yes, but Little Man came out before Blu-ray was even a year old (or maybe even 6 months). That, in and of itself, is SCARY.

That's because it was a day-and-date release with the DVD. Sony is being pretty good about that with all their new flicks, even if those flicks are indeed "Little Man".

Yeah, but they cancelled MARIE ANTOINETTE, which was supposed to come out day and date (until it didn't), would have been an infinitely better showcase for the format and, coincidentally, happens to be a good movie.

Ugh, total waste of film. I'm a car guy and this movie made a mockery of a lot of things I like. It also brought a ton of "ricers" into the car scene simply because they saw this movie.

I saw this movie again last year and it was even better than I remembered it. It has a pretty decent following and most everything some people complain about it is intentional. Some just don't get it. A perfect example of the kind of movies that should be released early in a format cycle. A classic eighties movie set in whenever it's supposed to be.
Kram Sacul 06-25-07, 08:10 PM Of all the releases that should be questioned for being "horrible" we get a complaint thread about Streets of Fire? Move on, nothing to see here.

ragar01 06-25-07, 10:28 PM I was out in CA visiting back when Streets of Fire was being filmed at Universal Studios. They had a huge scaffold erected to allow curtains to be used to block out the sunlight. This allowed "night time" filming during daylight hours.
I have it on laserdisc and I will double dip it on HD DVD when it comes out.

But right now there is a format war and there are two choices. If HD DVD wins hopefully the "Little Man" disaster won't be released, but by then there will only be one format to choose from, like DVD. Some movies just don't deserve to be released.
Lee Stewart 06-25-07, 10:55 PM From Wiki on Streets of Fires:
Universal Studio's Streets of Fire, directed by Walter Hill, and co-written by Hill and Larry Gross in the fall and winter of 1983, was described in previews, trailers, and posters as "A Rock & Roll Fable." It's an unusual mix of musical, drama and comedy with elements both retro 1950's and [contemporary] the 1980's.
The film stars Michael Paré, Diane Lane, Rick Moranis, Amy Madigan, E.G. Daily, and Willem Dafoe, and includes cameos by future stars of stage and screen. The film, a box office flop, was a summer release in 1984. Its dynamic music score, however, has helped it attain something of a cult follwing among fans
Sounds very much tlke The Idolmaker
Oh . . . "cult followings" buy movies - not rent them.
David Susilo 06-25-07, 11:13 PM Yay, racists!

"Ricers" is not a racist term. "Ricers" are "Rice Rockets" racers. People who race "Rice Rockets" or customized/modified Japanese cars. Thus "ricers" can't be viewed as a racist remark since it does not aimed towards any race.

MJeeves 06-26-07, 09:27 AM "STREETS OF FIRE" is the very definition of a CULT classic.
It has a VERY SIZABLE cult following and everone I know likes it. It isn't for everyone because it is too "stylish" and "over-the-top" but those who love it love it.
Also, it has grown in popularity over the years. This has been helped by a great soundtrack that sold well and the young stars going onto better things (O.K. maybe not Micheal Pare, but Bill Paxton and Willem Dafoe are well known and Diane Lane is a big star now).
Lastly, Diane Lane has NEVER looked better than in this movie and to see her as leather-clad diva Ellen Aim in HD will be a major turn-on for most hot-blooded males.
C'mon, it's a great movie. Stylish and original but also great. I love Hill's "The Warriors" and I like this as much if not more.
I hope the HD picture is as good as it was on Cinemax as that was AWESOME!
Bring it on Universal ! Diane Lane in HD !

Southern Comfort, now that was a cool movie!
I was out in CA visiting back when Streets of Fire was being filmed at Universal Studios. They had a huge scaffold erected to allow curtains to be used to block out the sunlight. This allowed "night time" filming during daylight hours.
My first viewing of the movie was during a seminar hosted by the DP Andy Laszlo. He had a lot of stories about what an ordeal that giant tarp created. It was sweltering hot beneath it, holes kept tearing in the material and letting in pools of sunlight, and then it rained.
We also watched The Warriors, Southern Comfort, First Blood, and Innerspace (which was his personal favorite project to work on because he got to play with all sorts of trick photography). He was a fun guy and a great speaker.

My purpose was quite simple - at a time when HD DVD is fighting with Blu-Ray for dominance in the hi-def marketplace, I was perplexed as to why this movie was being released in HD DVD. There are many better prospects than this. ( Obviously YMMV) So I asked that question. That's all, nothing evil intended.

David - give it up - not important. It is not a slang term - just a term to describe highly modified Japanese cars.
No different then drifters, or dragsters or funny cars or pro-modified.
I know it is not a racist term because you hear it ALL the time on TV and TV is sensitive to being "politically correct"
That would be like saying drifters is making fun of hobo's and that isn't right. The fact that Japanese people eat a lot of rice - well that is where the original term came from. It's not bad - just a fact. Just like they eat more sushi than other countries - they better or else they would starve.
OK back to Street of Fire.
"They always hire bums like me to do jobs like this"

It's described as a Rock & Roll Fable -- seems like a good description to me! I would say Purple Rain fits the same classification -- I'm a sucker for that as well :D! Two titles that I tend to crank and just soak up :D! Definitely films deserving of a large screen presentation to fullly appreciate the visuals (though no doubt you have to like that sort of thing).
PS. The current SD rendition is actually VERY satisfying -- I compared it to my LD and the DVD won (both sound and video.)

The DVD is non-anamorphic and is acceptable... nothing more. Compared to more recent anamorphic DVD's it is quite poor.
This film is in dire need of a new HD-remaster and the Cinemax HD presentation was superb.
Great visuals (including the sexy Diane Lane) but also superb soundtrack too.
I just hope they put some extras on there as well... music videos, making of, trailers, gallery (especially Diane Lane!), and a commentary.
Sadly, I don't think Walter Hill does Special Editions (except "The Warriors" of course). :(

Brad1963 06-27-07, 01:39 PM I remember seeing it back in the 80's for the Diane Lane factor and thought the Music was quite good. If I remember correctly the Soundtrack was a big seller and the song "I can dream about you" maybe have been a single. It was a early Standard DVD title from Universal, and obviously sold enough units for them to bring it to HD DVD.
Lee Stewart 06-27-07, 02:09 PM What sticks out in mind is that one song from Danny something ( I can dream about you) And a young ugly Willem Defoe!
I am getting this for sure

Dan Hartman was his name.
He had a brief success during the disco era and he is very unique in one way. On all of his previous songs he played every instrument one track at a time. Talk about a one man band!
This feat was repeated by a man by the name of Tom Shotz (Sp Ck) - A graduate of MIT Engineering school who had a hobby in music. He has an IQ reported to be in excess of 180 and due to his engineering background and love of R & R music - holds numerous patents on equipment he has designed for the sound production industry.
And to add to all this talent - he, in his spare time, wrote songs - again like Dan Hartman - even though it sounds like there is a whole band behind the vocals - it really is Tom doing all of it by himself. In fact his first album is 100% Tom and no one else. The other members of his band were hired after the popularity of the album.
Oh . . . . Tom's band went on and became a very successful. Maybe you heard of his band . . . . .

This is why I keep kicking myself I did not join this Forum years ago.I would read here and there, but never committed to it until late last year...
This is amazing you can get a piece of trivia on the fly, from informative folks.
Danny Hart...Hmm he pass? I remember him on some 80's show (Solid Gold I think),and was surprise he was white...(I was 11 or 12 years old..)
I am not a big disco fan ,but enjoy some of his stuff..Instant replay was one of his hits??

TrevorS 06-27-07, 03:14 PM The DVD is non-anamorphic. I'll have to take another look, but I don't recall the video being very good.
-Bill
I can only say it looks very good upscaled on my 78" screen. It's a shame they didn't provide an anamorphic transfer, but it's not an especially wide aspect ratio to begin with (1.85:1 cropped to 16:9). As it is, the picture quality for non-anamorphic is excellent IMO, and noticeably superior to the LD. I generally prefer the LD PCM to the DVD renditions, but in this case, the DD5.1 is remarkably effective and I prefer it.
Obviously, the HD DVD should be the superior choice :)!

"Instant Reply" was the name of his Disco era hit.
"I can dream about you "made it to the top ten on the Billboard.
The real good song on the movie was the energetic song" Tonight is what it means to be young" by Fire Inc.

He also did "Total Eclipse of the Heart" for Bonnie Tyler. Once you know they're Steinman tunes, it seems very obvious. He has a very distinctive style of songwriting.

MJeeves 06-28-07, 03:44 AM I remember BOSTON - "More Than A Feeling" right ?
And DAN HARTMAN - Sad to hear he has died.
Did DIANE LANE do any singing on "STREETS OF FIRE" as I hear she is a talented singer/performer as well as being a great actress and top quality beauty?
Ralph Jenkins 06-28-07, 07:09 AM I was glad I bought my HD DVD player when I heard this was coming out. One of my favorite movies. I wouldn't call it a great film, but it's very entertaining. And as others have said, the SD DVD isn't even anamorphic.

Some more trivia tidbits from wiki:
Streets of Fire reunited Walter Hill with producers Lawrence Gordon and Joel Silver and screenwriter Larry Gross all of whom worked together on 48 Hrs.. The four men began planning Streets of Fire while completing 48 Hrs. Afterwards, Gross and Hill worked on the screenplay, writing ten pages a day.[1] Hill said, "When we finished, we submitted it to Universal on a Friday (in January of 1983) and by the end of the weekend, they gave us the go-ahead."[1] The film's title came from a song written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen on his album "Darkness on the Edge of Town."[1] Originally, plans were made for the song to be featured on the film's soundtrack, but when he was told that the song would be re-recorded by other vocalists, he withdrew permission for the song to be used.[1]

He also wrote songs for Air Supply
and one of his own songs was...Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through.
The one that I hate is this one.
It's All Coming Back To Me Now (Celine Dion )
The ones that I like from him are the ones on this movie.
MJeeves 06-28-07, 10:19 AM Do you think we will see the music videos from "STREETS OF FIRE" i.e.
"Tonight It Was It Means To Be Young"
"Nowhere Fast"
"Sorcerer"
"I Can Dream About You"
These were released on a VHS Cassette tape along with a cool "Making Of" doc when the film was originally released in theaters in 1984. I have it somewhere.
I'd love to see those videos and the "Making Of" again in better quality.
Do you think they may turn up on the HD-DVD with the trailers ?
I hope so!!!
The music is sooo cool in this film. Diane Lane is great at lip-synching.

That's a big jump from 48 hrs. to Streets of Fire.... Uni red lighted this pretty fast as well, I guess they where banking for a big hit, after the 48 Hrs. smash.
Funny thing is every time I hear those words Streets of Fire I think of Bruce Springsteen... I guess that's why he is call the Boss ;)

I loved "48 Hours" to be honest. A great action flick well before other "buddy cop thrillers" like "Lethal Weapon" etc etc.
However, "Streets of Fire" has more style and originality to it than your average action movie. And... Diane Lane.
It was meant to be a big hit. Universal already had sequels planned and it was a bigger Summer release up against "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock". Sadly, the film was poorly marketed (with a poster that did nothing to tell you what the film was about) and the reviews were scalding. "Star Trek" ate it for breakfast and the film was labeled a flop. The sequels went unmade. A shame.
Thankfully, like "Blade Runner" and other theatrical flops, it found it's audience on home video and TV. It is a popular title now in Universal's catalog, helped by the successful soundtrack and star studded cast (Lane, Paxton, Dafoe etc etc).
It may not yet be as popular as "Blade Runner" or some other cult favourites but it is getting that way and one day might be. A good film and a very stylish one too. Here's hoping to a GREAT HD-DVD presentation!
