View Full Version : A quick (and probably silly) DLP home theater question

I am considering a DLP set to replace my CRT RPTV. I was wondering how tightly those mirrors are controlled, as I happen to have a subwoofer with serious extension. Has anyone with a DLP ever had issues with bass vibrations messing up the picture?

The mirrors are so small that their 'natural frequency' (the frequency where the structure responds) is well above the frequency any subwoofer can output. So no, you will not have an issue.

But if it vibrates too much, you can possibly dislodge color wheels, light tunnels or other moving parts depending on which brand and what else is inside the tv.

You can't really be serious.

OK, do what you want, but it has caused problems for some people with super powerful subs too close.

If it's powerful enough to rattle the light tunnel loose, it's probably doing other damage to the room.

I used a crt based rptv for 5 years with the sub right next to it, I expected the guns to vibrate out of convergence on a regular basis--never happened. I've had a Sony SXRD in the same spot for nearly 8 months now with no problems. I actually had my right main jump off speaker stand once when the sub was really kicking but have never damaged a tv.

If the vibrations were bad enough to actually damamge the TV, the picture would also be unwatchable while it was happening.

I have a feeling the TV be safe! I love my sub but I'm now confident the set will be OK.

When I first got my sub, I heard my next door neighbor talking to my wife the morning after we'd watched "The Haunting" about all the distant thunder he'd noticed, but there wasn't any lightning. She told him about the sub, and he came over for a demo. Fortunately they don't hear it in their house. They'd been on their back deck. They're fine with it, thank goodness. I could never live in a condo, though!
