I just noticed that if I have the TV powered on in a very dark room and the screen is black or there is no signal I can see a rectangle on the screen. Is this normal or is this some type of image retention? I have no idea what I've been watching that would do this. Could it be the way the light is refracting within the set?

Can any other owners test this?

In a very dark room turn the TV on and switch it to an input that doesn't have a signal so you get a blank screen. This is where I can see a darker rectangle in the middle. I would say on my 50" screen the rectangle is about 35 to 40" and slightly darker than the rest of the screen. I have no idea how long its been there since I was never looking for it but now that I know its there its easy to see/find.

I wouldn't mind so much but in my dark room I can see this at times during some movies if the content is dark enough.

I have the 50A2000 and I have never seen a square or rectangle and I think I have a good eye for detail. I will double check tonight with a blank input. Supposedly, there isn't IR on lcd's or lcdrptv's to my knowledge.

This sounds like leakage from the lamp to me. I know a number of people with the XBR2 60" reported this. I suggest searching your owner's thread for "leak" or "leakage" to see if this model also had this issue.

Well shoot, I think you're right I think it is leakage. :(

Evilbeaver: I put on my 50A2000 to a blank input(5) and turned the brightness up. I couldn't see a rectangle, maybe a faint line, but that's it. Is your set still under warranty? Just guessing. Is it possible that the bulb may need adjusting/tightening/replacing or maybe light is leaking from the silicon chip, since it has a reflective surface?

Thanks a bunch for checking that for me. The TV should still be under warranty so I'll probably have them take a look at it. Thanks again.

Turn the TV off and see if it's there.

Ok I had Sony's local authorized service guys come out and take a look at my set about a month ago.
I don't think they were able to see the problem, one guy kept shaking his head like I was crazy or nitpicking. They never called me back so I called them up today. They had me check the gamma setting which didn't have any effect. They said they would get back with Sony and call me back. We will see, I am not happy so far. Anyway I took some pics with my crappy phone camera and to my surprise it shows up. If I took these pics at night with a better camera I imagine it would show up even clearer.

I had this happen to me recently but let me explain how I believe I may have caused it. I had recorded a solid white background(for testing purposes) from a channel on my 8300HD DVR then I played it and paused it. After it had paused so long I got this box like you're seeing.

So did you get it fixed? If so, what was done, Sony seems clueless.

do you mean the white rectangle up in the top left LOL sorry, I'm dealing with GWIII problems and techs calling at the last minute and cancling :(

Heh I believe the white box is the input display. If you look at the opposite side of the screen you can definitely see the purple-black border and a darker corner of the rectangle.

I've never done any pattern testing or anything that should cause this problem, just normal viewing. Heck I have a Pioneer Plasma as well and its flawless. You would think if I was going to get burn-in or IR it would be on the plasma

Well thumbs down for Sony service. Its been over a month now and the only thing I've been told to do is check my gamma setting. WTF

I cancelled the service request since at this point I'd rather deal with the crappy blacks than deal with their non-existant service.

Oh and here's a picture of another issue I've experienced.

I first saw it on Babel during a dark scene where shadows on Cate Blanchet's mouth were glowing purple instead of being black. Well tonight while I was watching Disturbia it happened again. I took pictures of the same scene on my Pioneer for a comparison. Sorry for the poor quality, I had to use the phone camera again.

Oh forgot to add both TV's were set to STANDARD settings for this.

Well I have green blob now. I still prefer the looks of my SXRD to the other techs I see so hopefully they can fix it. Guy diagnosed it over the phone and is going to order an optical block. I have subtle purple shading on the edges and gren blob in the middle. Nowhere near as bad as the the picture above though.

Babel was when I saw my light Engine/optical block going south
Good luck

Just like above I'm gonna say OB/LE

I just had the third one installed in my GWIII and the right side of the TV is still yellow. I'm pushing for a refund now.
Keep us updated and good luck guys

Can you post a pic?

I've tried to take a few pictures, but it doesn't really show up well with my camera.

The purple is worse at the top and bottom. It's almost like light leakage on a cheap LCD. The set's been on for about 5 hours so the green in the center isn't as bad now, but the there are times on a black screen where the center seems ligther than the edges so I assume that's the green coming through. I've been watching Heroes on DVD and flesh tones seems greener than usual and reds aren't crisp. The show seems to be a bit stylized in it's lighting though so I'm going to compare by watching the discs on my laptop.

Well I'm probably going to drive up to San Antonio this weekend and have the set serviced up there. *sigh*

Who did you get it from? I'm on hold with Conns right now on mine :)
I think they want me to bring the tv back to San Antonio too (but I live in north OK now (military) ) I do not know how I'm gonna get this down there....

I don't have a warranty with Best Buy so I have to do this all through Sony.

The local authorized service guys here in Corpus are either blowing me off or they don't have a firm grasp on the concept of customer service. They came out once for about 5 minutes to look the set over and that was it. I had to keep calling them back for updates. I was never given a timeframe on anything. I was always told they were waiting to hear back from Sony and that Sony was stumped. I was always promised they would call me back but they never did. After about a month they asked me to check the gamma settings. A month goes by and all you've done is ask me to check a setting?!?!?
Totally unacceptable service IMO so I cancelled the service request.

Anyway, I talked to one of the service centers in San Antonio and the guy seemed familiar with SXRD, I got a good vibe so I think they'll take care of me.

Luckily I have relatives in San Antonio so I can visit them while I'm up there and have them take me to dinner. :D
