Talked to mits today, was told Y657 also does not have Dark Detailer
This and the Perfect Tint IMO is worth the bump to the 734....the Dark Detalier increases the contrast ratio.
Last years 731 model didnt' have the Dark Detailer and Perfect Tint and you could tell the diffrence between it and the 732.
tlbowerts 08-03-07, 09:41 AM PPGPAUL,
Yes, The Y65 is last years model, My C City Y65 was $1999, and Y657 was $2199.
Just to update on a post I made earlier in the week. I purchased the unit at Fry's ($1999), and had problems 1 hour after getting it home and plugged in. Called the Fry's customer service the next day, and they said just come in and switch it with a new unit. Of course, I had purchased the last unit at that Fry's, so I had to go to another one about 30 minutes away (no big deal). Swapped the unit at the Customer Service desk (thankfully, I didn't have to return for full credit and then buy a new one and sit in the new purchase line). As soon as I saw the box, I knew what had happened. The unit I had purchased originally was not fresh from the factory. The box was taped together, the plastic wrap on the TV was not intact. On the new set I picked up, the TV was fully wrapped in protective wrap, and the box was wrapped with plastic banding, something you can't do at home. Got home and the unit has been fantastic all week. As you've seen from the other posts here, beautiful picture, great sound, I'm quite happy with my choice. I figure that someone else bought that defective unit, had a problem at some point in the first 30 days, then taped it back together and returned it without mentioning the problem. Thanks a lot.
Anyway, very happy so far. Glad I did the research, and at $1999, it's a heck of a deal. Now I just need to finish my speaker setup and decide which Bluray player to get, or should I just get a PS3?

pottscb 08-03-07, 01:25 PM Is the 73" worth the price jump over 65" (734 model)
Here's how I'm seeing it:
Surface area of a 73" screen is 36X64=2304sq.in.
Surface area of a 65" screen is 32X57=1824sq.in.
...which makes the 73" ~21% bigger
The price of the 73" = 3199
The price of the 65" = 2199
...which makes the 73" ~31% more expensive.
(I got these measurements off of projectorcentral.com calculator and the prices from my local Fry's)
So, we're really getting diminished returns as we go over 65"...the question is, are we willing to pony up anyway? (I have a 30'X20' room , sit 12-14ft. awayand am seriously thinking about it!) Feel free to correct me if my math/logic is in error.
One thing to take into consideration is the rates at which prices fall...sometimes the larger, more expensive TVs experience "price compression" at a faster rate, I guess we can only wait and see.
I was at CompUSA the other day and they had both 73732 and 65731 on display (JVC 61FN97 or FH97 too). These sets are certainly not calibrated but you do see that the 73 inch one is a a little bit blurry. They were both fed by 1080i source at the time. For 12-15 feet distance, you should be fine though.

dannygroov 08-04-07, 10:02 PM I just picked up the 57in at fry's over the weekend onsale for 1599.99 and went up to 2499.99 today. I am waiting as patiently as possible for the Friday delivery. I want to watch 300 blu-ray *cry*
Which Fry's was that? And when was this?
I'm curious cause I went to Fry's over here in City of Industry, So Cal and the 57 was marked at 1999.99, the 65 was marked at 2399.99... After looking at the 57, I really want the 65 now. But I wonder if the price will drop anytime soon. So far, I've visited Costco, Sears, Circuit City, Best Buy, and Walmart. Out of all those, only Fry's had the 734 in stock.... amazing...
Any word on the 833's? I'm hoping these can come out so maybe the 734's can drop in price a little?

the sale started on 07/27 and ended 07/31 It was listed the same price at both fry's In Houston, TX. I couldnt believe what a good deal it was I had to pick it up. BTW I got it and It is wonderful. I had no problems right out of the box. I've been playing assorted PS3 games (The Darkness, Ninja Gaiden, and I watched 300 probably 4 times already) This TV is beautiful.
itsamikey 08-05-07, 11:52 PM Just got my WD65734 and so far love it. And that is before I have my Direct HD installed. The DVD's look awesome. And so far, aside from some instability issues, my HDMI is working fine coming in from a Denon 2807, sending a signal from an Oppo 970, also using HDMI into the Denon.
Buddy C 08-06-07, 02:58 PM I just purchased the new CC exclusive model WD-Y657. This is replacing my 7 year old WS-65857 CRT. I compared the picture on both models side-by-side, and I can finally admit the DLP image is superior to the CRT image. My biggest issue with DLPs was SSE. My eye is drawn to sparkley SSE, and it diminishes my viewing experience. I see no SSE on the WD-657 and no rainbows. The picture is crisp and clear on HD sources. Very little overscan on my new DLP.
The only issue I have with my set is the bowing (pincushion) at the edges. Its not major bowing, but it is noticeable. With 4:3 material, both side bars bend towards the top and bottom corners. That bend is there even a foot in from the sides. The top horizontal also bends into the top corners beginning about a foot in from the corners. I can push slightly forward on the top corners from behind the screen and the top bows will straighten. It seems the screen is not perfectly flat all over as a solid light reflection goes 3/4 doughnut shaped (minor warping?) as I pan it into into the top corner. Of course, neither my wife nor son notice this issue. Watching HD NASCAR yesterday, my eye kept being drawn to the horizontal top-screen scrolling leaderboard, bending as it rolled out of and into the corners. The bottom horizontal looks perfectly straight. The bends on the right side are a mirror image of the bends on the left.
Is this something that a tech can fix on a warranty call, rather than returning the set and risking another issue with another set? I love the picture and would prefer to keep this one if the bowing can be fixed. If not, back to CC it goes because like SSE, my eyes are drawn to it.

I just came back from fr*'s and they had both 57 and 65734 on sale for *significantly* less than prices quoted above. I don't want to violate the rules, so call to find out. sale ends TODAY (8/7). You have about 2 hrs til closing time.

If you are not afraid to enter the service mode of your set , you can do a MANUAL KEYSTONE GEOMETRY ALIGNMENT. I described how to do it on the XX733 thread. This made a significant difference on my set

Yeah, I saw that too. Almost makes me wish I would've waited to get the 65734.
cdriccio 08-08-07, 08:07 PM Hey guys...
I'm looking at the 734 in 57" form. I'm trying to decide between getting this guy or getting the now discontinued 831.
Do any of you know the differences between the 734 and the 831?
Anyone know about the reliability of these sets?
On another note!
Now I just need to finish my speaker setup and decide which Bluray player to get, or should I just get a PS3?
-Mike
Just get a PS3!
cnet already rates the PS3 as the best HD Movie Player out there. I would post a link to the article but I can't just yet b/c I'm a newbie.
Then factor in that you can wirelessly link it to your PC and play music, movies and photos via the PS3 off said PC. Throw in the gaming and you have one hell of a great deal for $500!
broketoo 08-08-07, 08:36 PM I'd get a PS3 too, just make sure you got some space for the player... I wouldn't put the thing in an enclosed space with a glass door as it will get really hot in there.
As long you don't care about 200 watts usage and having space for it, get it.

The 831 was last years top of line
the only things that i know that the 734 has that the 831 does not have is TurboLight 180 ( 831 has Turbolight 150)4 HDMI 1.3 (831 has 3hdmi 1.2) and the new XVcolor.
The 831 has pic in pic , cable card, etc the 734 does not.
as for as reliability, they are about the same as all the others, some people here have talked about a loud humming on 734 ,but i have the 65734 and no humming at all . hope this helps!

It does tlbowerts! A LOT!
Sounds like the 734 is the way to go. I'm not worried about picture in picture. It's a feature I've used on my current Mitsu like twice. However, the 4 HDMI ports being 1.3 standard is pretty big for me. I could wait for the 833, but I have a feeling the price of it would be out of my range. The 734 fits nicely into my price range.
I was looking at the Samsung LED DLPs as well, but something about the picture being significantly brighter in the middle of the screen than the outside has pushed me away. When one of the Blu-Rays I really wanna watch over and over is 300... and people say that it's much easier to see the "bright spot" in darker scene. Yeah, 300 is one big 2+ hour dark scene.
My CRT Mitsu (2002 Diamond series) just went nuts on me yesterday. Blue gun is shooting weird. Have an extended warranty on it though, so they are coming out next week.
Now I know I'm getting the extended warranty on this one too. :)
As for the humming... I may notice it while I'm watching TV or gaming on my PS3 or Wii. I'm sure I won't hear it while I'm playing my 360 though. That thing is so load it's a wonder how I can even hear the game! ;)
The 831 has the 180 watt lamp. Go to the Mit's sight and look at their updates for it. It also has a high contrast screen.
Mits 73831 (http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/j/i/18326/TelevisionDetails/WD73831.html?cid=389#/c/3422)
The 831 also was CNET's pick for RPTV.
IMO if you can score an 831 pick it up. You won't get the deep color which nothing is out for yet, but you will get a better picture and also PIP, cable card, pc hook up and IEEE 1394 hook ups.
I've seen the 831 in person and also have had the 734...the 831 is a very nice TV.
Of course you can wait and get the 833 and negate the HDMI issues between the two.

Well, I would love to do the 831. It's an issue of Financing and Extended Warranty. I have a 5 year warranty on my current 2002 Mitsu CRT, and the thing just wacked out on me yesterday for the first time. Luckily I still have 6 months on the warranty.
Trust me, I saw cNet's review. On cNet, I also noticed a number of negative user reviews that said they had problems with the set. So an extended warranty would be a must for me.
Financing wouldn't be an issue since I have the 3 diamond card which many of the online retailers will accept.
I would LOVE to get the 833, but I have a feeling it would be out of my price range. The Mitsu site has it MSRPed over $2800. Too steep for me.
I'm not going to mention price of the 734, but from where I'm getting it, it's basically $400 off which pays for my 5 year warranty.
I'll have to see if any of the online retailers offer warranties and go from there.

The biggest issue with last years model is the temp sensor. Also the high contrast screen on the 831's can be a bit much for some. I liked it and thought it added an extra kick to the picture.
The 734 is a nice TV if you get a good one. In my area the 65" is below 2K right now which is a steal for what you get with this TV.
Seems like you are taking your time...which is a good thing. Good luck with your choice.

Is the "TurboLight180™" what shows the wattage of the lamp, b/c the 734 has that too according to Mitsu's product page (http://mitsubishitv.com/j/i/18326/TelevisionDetails/WD57734.html?cid=5411) .
I really appreciate all of the info. I'm trying to do as much research as possible since I feel kind of screwed with my current TV. I love it, but at the time I bought it, there were better options and I didn't know.
So it is your opinion that the 831 has a better picture?
That's the only thing I REALLY care about.
I found a place that still has them for a good price and offers a 5-year warranty. I want to call them and ask about it though. I'm sure I could get some sort of financing through them too.

The 831 has a 180W lamp. I dont really know what the heck turbolight means, but it doesnt make sense to have turbolight 150 on a 180W bulb.
the turbolight 150 is for the models that have 150W lamps.

I would suggest looking at both sets with your own eyes. The reason I say this is because what "we" may like you may not.
The 831 is a fantastic set and was last years "top of the line" model. IMO having seen the 831 and owned the 734 I think the 831 has nicer picture. It is not a super drastic difference but noticeable.

BDP, you've been a great help.
Just to give an update. I called an online retailer and talked to them for about 20 minutes about the two TVs. He said that I was probably better off getting the 734 since the xvColor was something that was developed by Mitsu and Sony in conjunction and the PS3 will probably take advantage of it, as well as the HDMI 1.3 spec.
The set will mainly be used for gaming. So I think I'm going to go with that.
The set will mainly be used for gaming.
Well why didn't you say so ;)
The 734 has a "game mode" which last years model didnt' have.
I used it a few times when I had my 734 and it seemed to add a little more contrast to the screen and also make things move a little smoother.
I have an Onkyo 605 feeding just one HDMI cable to the TV so my only gripe about it is you can only assign it to the input that is named "game".
:(

Yeah I'm going to order it tonight. I'll keep you informed of progress and stuff. The retailer I talked with said they accept the Mitsubishi 3-Diamond card, so I'm good to go with 12 months same as cash financing! whoohoo!
nc88keyz 08-10-07, 08:19 PM Sears might as well just announce that they are no longer carrying MITS as a brand, since they dont give a @&#$* about giving a consumer an option on a 65" DLP. i now have a $2000 entertainment wall sitting in my house...boxed waiting for something other than the TOSHIBA and no I DO NOT want to go with a 60,61...Too much screen real estate loss.
the saga continues....
what retailer are you looking at by the way. Im just collecting data for my lawsuit against Sears :)
Boys and Girls, Ill sell my vouchure for p/u in wilmington, nc boxed for 2000. My voucher includes tax. 2199 + 7% tax *up to 2199 worth of nc state tax** on a tv of your choice if you are interested. Perhaps someone in raleigh, cary, apex may consider this a deal. PM for very solid references. Im also listed on the DOI website for North Carolina as well as 25 other non-resident states.
2199 + 154 worth of tax = 354 off at sears sale or regular prices. I just cannot find anything I want
This has to be used on a television only.
1st time poster here that is seriously thinking about buying a XX734 model. I am about convinced from the great info I have found here. Can anyone tell me how fast action sports look on these models? My father-in-law recently bought a Samsung DLP and it seems to blur during sports action and screen pans. Any help and/or insight would be appreciated.

I have the 65734 and am very happy with it, great PQ .
mind looks fine on fast action sports or anything fast action, no blur at all.
If its any thing more that you would like to know, I will try to help.
No blur on mine either watching Nascar and football in HD. Stunning picture.
nc88keyz 08-13-07, 01:44 PM i bet Sears gets the 60" a3000 before the 734....wanna take bets?
AlVacado 08-13-07, 02:58 PM I am also tring to decide on a 831 or 734/733. Does anyone know which model the Curcuit City WE-Y577 matches? is it the 734 or 733. I believe it is the 733. Anyhow....leaning towards the 87831. I know it's not 65....dont have the room for the 65. It's replacing a 50" mits that is 11 years old!
Can get the 831 it at Vanns for 1699. Free ship...no tax...and comes with a free Harmony remote. A little concerned about buying something so large from mail-order...any experience out there on that issue? Good pricing from CC on their Y577...about the same price. Downloaded the owners manual from Mits website and lists the 734/733 and T577 all on one guide.

About the CC Y577 ,its a cross beween a 733 and 734. The 2 big things that it does not have that the 831 and 734 have is PerfecTint and DarkDetailer.
The 831 is a better tv that the CC Y577,831 is last years top of line model, you would get much more for the same price.
I got my 65734 by mail-order,and am very happy with it, you can buy all 3 for about the same price ,with the 734 and 831 you get more tv for same price,so makes more sence to go with 831 or 734
tlbowerts 08-13-07, 05:37 PM I am also tring to decide on a 831 or 734/733.
Downloaded the owners manual from Mits website
and lists the 734/733 and T577 all on one guide.
I got the 734 over the 831 coz i wanted the 4 HDMI 1.3 that the 734 have ,but 831 has some things that 734 does not have, so its about what works best for you, both tvs are very nice
beowulf7 08-15-07, 02:23 PM The pics on p. 1 look really nice. I've been eying a Samsung DLP TV. But due to the widespread smile face/bowing issue on the HL-Txx76S model, lack of HDMI 1.3 on the HLT-Txx87S and cost prohibitive nature of the HL-Txx89S, someone told me to take a look at the new Mitsubishi DLP TVs. I'm sure people have thoroughly compared this TV to Samsung, Sony, etc. I'm still catching up on this 10-page (and growing) thread, but would like to know how people decided to go with Mitsubishi over Samsung and the 734 series over 733 or 833 (which is still in pre-order state).
One other quick question: what are the dimensions of the "foot" that come with this TV? TIA.

I pick Mit over Samsung, as i think the mit has better PQ ,bowing issue with sammy , sam hard to see from side, lack HDIM 1.3 ETC
I have the 65734 Great PQ, and no motion blur in fast moving scenes at all,The 733 does not have PerfecTint and DarkDetailer and 3 HDMI not 4 like 734 and 833.
3 of the things that the 833 has that the 734 does not is pip,3D game and 120Hz
(to minimize motion blur) i dont card about pip, don't play games much, and like i said no motion blur anyway so 734 was best pick for me
The dimensions of the foot on the 65734 is 36" W and about 13"D
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to head to the big-box stores to compare Mitsubishi and Samsung directly. It seems like all of these manufacturers have a unique con, so one winds having to decide on the TV that is the lesser of the evils. For example, it seems like Mitsubishi has a loud fan/whining noise and Samsung (at least the lamp-based model) have some geometry (bowing, smiley-face) issues. : \
I did see a comparison of the 733 vs. 734 vs. 833 on CNET. I'll post that info. in my next post.
beowulf7 08-16-07, 01:35 PM Here (http://reviews.cnet.com/projection-tvs/mitsubishi-wd-57833/4505-6484_7-32450676.html) are the differences between the new Mitsubishi DLP TVs.
733 series
Models
* 57-inch WD-57733 ($2,500)
* 65-inch WD-65733 ($2,999)
* 73-inch WD-73733 ($4,700)
Features
* Three HDMI 1.3 inputs with Simplay HD certification
* Three component video inputs (two rear, one front)
* USB port for photo viewing
734 series
Models
* 57-inch WD-57734 ($2,799)
* 65-inch WD-65734 (no pricing)
Features
* Same as the 733 series, plus:
* PerfectTint, for additional customization of display settings.
* NetCommand, which is designed to let the TV control a rack full of A/V gear, much like a universal remote.
* An additional front HDMI input.
"Diamond" 833 series
Models
* 57-inch WD-57833 ($3,399)
* 65-inch WD-65833 ($3,999)
* 73-inch WD-73833 ($5,899)
Features
* Same as the 734 series, plus:
* FireWire port
* RS-232 input
* Smooth120Hz, which appears to be Mitsubishi's name for 120Hz refresh rate. A 120Hz refresh rate supposedly creates a smoother image during fast-motion scenes, although we have yet to test it with Mitsubishi or other manufacturers.
* TV Guide On Screen, a built-in electronic program guide.
* Game FX, which is 3D gaming functionality, although there are no current titles that support it.

Yes, your right! all of the manufacturers have a unique con, but you can get good ones from any of them, for example my 734 has no loud fan/whining noise,I can put my tv on mute and still hear no nosie, i need to put my head in back of it to hear the fan at all.
The best thing to do is what you said, go and compare them for your self and get what looks best to you, and hope you get a good one whatever it is.
nc88keyz 08-16-07, 08:07 PM tlbowerts,
If you were in my shoes you would get which tv. .to recap I have a vouchure from sears for replacement on a ws65311
I have until the 10th of september.
they have no mits.
no newer sonys yet.
toshiba 65"
I wanted to stay with 65 and this would just be so easy if they had the 65734...not sure what the issue with sears is right now. they have always carried the mits in the last few years. alwayss the medalion and gold series. never the diamond.
what gives.
sacrafice the 5" and hope for the a3000, or go with the dated toshiba 65" eiher way I will not be purchasing another sears warranty ever. too much headache to get them to do the right thing and now they have me by the balls so to speak with a credit of more than enough to get a nice tv. just very scarce selections
thanks for the advice.
tlbowerts 08-16-07, 10:13 PM nc88keyz,
If i was in your shoes,I'dhope for and get the SONY a3000. I know someone who just got one and it's a very nice tv, i know! i'd have a hard time if i 'd have to sacrafice 5" also . but would do this befor i would buy the toshiba 65".
AS for SEARS ( I STOP buying from them 10 years ago)
DJ Kuul ,in the "Are Mit Reliable Forum" He said A salesman from a local sears told him they've stopped carrying Mit due to the repair rate, maybe so maybe not, but i do know Mit repair rate is no higher than the others,so this makes no sense. If this was right , why are they still selling the Toshiba's as they have had a very bad repair rate over the last 4years or so

Glad to hear your 734 is doing well and steinfire is apparently very happy with his. There's a "How reliable is Mitsubishi" thread where someone claimed Mitsubishi does not honor warranty for any TVs bought from any Web sites, other than Amazon. That means 1 Call would not be considered as an authorized reseller. Is there any truth to that? I find that hard to believe.

Mitsubishi has a list of Authorized ONLINE dealers and One Call is on it as well as others. Go to www.mitsubishi-tv.com select a model and then click buy online, that will give you the list of ONLINE authorized dealers. You may want to try a few different models to get the entire list.

How come all I ever hear in hear are negative things about Mitsubishi. I thought they were supposed to be the best Rear Projection Company. Maybe its time to give up on Mits and go Samsung 6187s or Sony 60A3000.

stingrae 08-17-07, 02:58 PM I love the information that is provided by the users of this forum. They have helped me make many smart A/V purchases over the last four years.
However, it also contributes to information overload and doubt because there is always an opinion opposite of the choice you are about to make.
I have purchased the WD-73734 from CC for a great price with amazing 36mo. interest free financing. I currently have been using a 60" GWIII LCD and love it.
Is it me or have the technology improvements in DLP greatly reduced RBE? When I was buying my first HDTV, I was looking at the Sammy DLP and the GWIII and the Rainbows were a deal killer for me. I saw them constantly. Now, thye don't seem to bother me. I have been out of the loop on DLP for the past several years so I was wondering if this is something that the manufacturers targeted specifically?
Secondly, I am having a bit of buyers remorse surrounding the 73833 that is about to come out because it features 120mhz refresh, which since all I watch are action movies, video games, and football, would seem to be an important improvement. I know several people have said that they don't have motion blur problems with the XX734 series, but I do notice it a bit. The quesiton is whether it is worth $1000 more?
Finally, are there any actual 73734 owners who would like to comment on their experiences? Is there pincushioning related to this model due to its size and frame?
Thanks in advance!
does anyone know when the 833's are coming out? I read all 10 pages and didnt really see that anywhere. I like the thought of the faster refresh rate, because like the last poster I watch alot of sports and play games. Are there any local Electronic stores that will sell these models? I live in Texas and dont have that Gregg company. I have BB, CC, Sears, Frys, Conns and thats about all I can think of close to me

I can help you with these questions I think. The xx833's are supposed to hit some stores as soon as this week (Aug 17th is the first date I have read about) but I think most retailers who are going to carry it will be getting it in the next few weeks. I am not aware of anybody who has spotted one in a store yet.
I don't think any of the Big Box retailers are carrying the xx833's, with the exception of Magnolia HT in select BB locations.
Go to http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com and select the model you are interested in. You will be prompted for your zip code to find your closest retailer.

I bought the just released CC exclusive Mitsubishi WD-Y657 (65") two weeks ago. I have no regrets. The set was just built in July. With help from others here I was able to straighten the minor bowing issue. I've avoided DLPs because I never thought the image was as nice as my seven year old 65" RP CRT. I didn't like the silkscreen or rainbow effect that I observed on the DLPs. The Samsungs look generally nice, but the ones I've seen suffer from sparkly SSE on bright solid images and have a high rate of bowing issues. I have no SSE on my new Mitsubishi and HD images are crisp and clear. I have seen no rainbows either. My fan is silent. This set has 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs, but what I've found really amazing is how pristine my XBOX360 HD-DVD movies look at component 1080i. The image just floors me. I see no quality difference in that 1080i HD-DVD image and the PS3 HDMI Blueray image. Both are great. Regular DVDs from the PS3 are also very nice.
As each day goes by, I am more and more happy that I didn't go for the current Samsung, Sony or Toshiba line. No buyer remorse here.

thanks. I called a few of my local BB Magnolias and they cant seem to find anything about them in their computers. Who knows... but there is a "Home Theater Store" around the corner from me who did say they should have them any day now. He said the retail price is $2499 but could probably knock a couple hundred off that price.
He did say that he has the 34 model in the store and hasnt had any customers return them for humming noises. In fact he said its the first he has heard of it. I told him it seems to be a pretty common issue, and he said that they plug in and inspect each set before they delver and could put in a special request to check the sound before they deliver if I went that route... this model would be about $400 or so less....
so which is better.... 120 refresh rate or $400... or would you guys reccomend buying it online and saving even more money? Iv buy things online and ebay ALL THE TIME, but never really made a big purchase of something like this, especially with so many "issues"
nc88keyz 08-17-07, 06:40 PM i am feeling the 833 with a couple hundred off of 2499.99 sounds like a sure thing.
THat set should be spectacular.
By the way to the person who mentioned zipcode dealer locator on mits website.
Sears comes up for all those hits.
Sears has no mitusbishis anywhere other than the aging 731s.
Dont let the dealer locator feature deceive you as well. :)

No, this is not right! yes i'd read this thread, this person got his from some E-bay site that was not authorized to sell Mit,so Mit would not honor his warranty,so now he's saying they will not honor any Web sites but Amazon, where he got this from i don't know.if you go by this they would not honor CC or BB etc. I got a Mit 57732 Last year for bedroom from 1 Call and had warranty work done on it and had no problem from Mit. Yes ,some Web Sites you have to watch where you buy especially E-bay sites. if your not sure about a site just call Mit and let them know where you want to buy from, and they will let you know if they are not authorized to sell Mit's
tlbowerts 08-17-07, 08:13 PM Is the newer WD-Y657 the 120Hz set?
No, Y657 is a CC only model ,a cross beween a 733 and 734
The new set coming out with 120Hz is the 833

yeah I think they've made progress on RBE. I think they've increased the rpm. also, the Mits have a 6-color wheel; I don't know if that makes a difference in RBE though.
did you not see the 73" at the store and compare it with the smaller displays? I'm tempted too to get the 73", but worry about the PQ loss. I'll look forward to your comparison vs your sony.
stingrae 08-17-07, 09:36 PM To me the $400 or so difference would be a no brainer, but each person has different budget constraints. I think the 120Hz is going to be a major improvement over the other models.
But on the 73" model i am getting the best price I can find is $1000 more than I paid for the 73734 and I wouldn't get 36 months interest free.
Sigh :(

I looked at a ton...it looks fantastic... I love it. I worry a bit that I am going to suddenly see the RBE that I had such problems with 4 years ago, but I have logged over an hour on it and haven't noticed.
As for PQ, they didn't have a SD feed so I only saw the HD feed that is piped in to 100 TV's. I am sure that SD will not look great at 73"s, but what the hell....tv sucks anyways. Football is broadcast in HD pretty much always now and I watch more movies then TV. I will let you know. I put off delivery until 9/1 just to see if anything shakes out with the 73833 once the online stores are selling them.

try a wd-65733 in the search, I think more retailers will come up
dannygroov 08-18-07, 12:22 AM So I got me the WD-65734 the other week and its really nice. However, the HD channels for some reason don't look all that great. I wonder if its because of Time Warner, but there are some ridges at times when watching Baseball for example. I'm not sure if its my settings or what. I may need to look around to see how people are configuring their sets cause I haven't touched it yet.
Contrast came at 63, everything else was set to 31.
The menu is very basic and simple. Its easy, but a little too simple. Seems almost limited.
JetJock3315 08-18-07, 05:23 PM Does anyone have the 73734 hooked up to a computer via a DVI-HDMI cable?
Is there too much overscan to prevent running a standard PC resolution to the screen?
I have a Toshiba 65H83 connected to a PC via DVI but the picture is just not usable as the overscan is too great and even with a custom resolution the quality is just too low.
I am just wondering if the newer technology in these RPTVs is good enough to run PC games etc. (and if the 73734 would be a good upgrade)
Thanks for your help (searching this thread did not turn any info)
drummerdano 08-18-07, 07:54 PM I am not experiencing the fan hum, but I do have something weird happening. Whenever I change a channel or a DVD is playing and you skip a track or if the audio format changes (from menu to title) the TV makes a "popping" noise which seems to be coming from the bottom of the TV. It is not loud but can be heard when it is doing what was said above.
It does it once when the remote sends the first signal and then once the source(audio/video) has set itself, it makes the sound a second time.
The set is a brand new 65734 and I am using the HDMI inputs being fed from my Dish VIP211 HD box and a Rotel 1092 DVD player.
Any help would be great!!!
To Mits 734/PS3 owners: Are there noticeable differences in contrast, brightness and color between 1080p and 1080i/480p BD video?
I have a 732 which I am in the process of replacing because of a weird bug I've experienced. If you calibrate contrast, brightness and color to 1080p, all other resolutions look too dark and a tad oversaturated; if you calibrate to all other resolutions, 1080p looks washed out and dull. I'm hoping that this bug is in last year's models only.
A simple test: play a 1080p BD, like "300," then play one of the extras that are native 1080i or 480p. Does it look too dark, like it has crushed blacks, and requires you to recalibrate? Or does it look the same as 1080p and requires no recalibration? Thanks for your help with my replacement decision.
I finally have to throw in the towel on my Samsung HLT6176S. I went through 3 exchanges and finally a Samsung tech came out and said this geometry problem cannot be fixed. Thankfully, I 'm still in my 30 days at CC. I havent seen it yet but the WDY657 sounds like a good alternative. Do you guys think that this will be a good switch? The PQ on the Samsung was nice but the geometry and rainbows was it for me. Has anyone that has seen rainbows seen them on the CC WDY657 Model. Please give me some feedback about this decision. Are there any other issues besides humming and can they be resolved? At least if I know they can be resolved I will get it.
KenMediaToo 08-19-07, 08:10 AM I have a 65734, and continue to be very happy with the unit. Great PQ, HD jsut 'snaps', and even SD looks as good as I have seen.
Earlier posts referred to wheel or fan noise, and after a month or two my unit is quiet - no problem on that.
I was also nervous about DLP and for some time never even considered that technology. Again for me, I have yet to see even one RBE artifact, even though I am looking for such a thing.
Finally, for the pincushion, mine had some when in 4:3 mode on the sides. And, when watching a movie in wider format than 16:9, the horizontal black stripes had a bit of bow to them, but not terrible.
Someone has already mentioned that the service manual is available on line for a nominal fee (less than 10 bucks through a major on line auction site). I bought that, and followed the pincusion adjustments with success. Horizontal black bars in movies are now very straight, and the 4:3 side bars are very good, except for a very very slight narrowing in the bottom 2 inches or so of the screen. All in all, not noticeable at all now.
Before the adjustment, the pincushion was not bad, but sometimes it was noticable. It does seem a pain to have to do such adjustments, but it seems to me that the optical angles in such a small depth TV would be sensitive to any small change during shipment, etc. The procedures seem effective at at least minimizing any pincushion to a rather low level, and the process was not all that difficult or time consuming.
Once you get used to the steps, it is quite easy to enter the pincushion adjust screen, do a tweak, and get back out before even a commercial goes by.
beowulf7 08-19-07, 02:12 PM No, this is not right! yes i'd read this thread, this person got his from some E-bay site that was not authorized to sell Mit,so Mit would not honor his warranty,so now he's saying they will not honor any Web sites but Amazon, where he got this from i don't know.if you go by this they would not honor CC or BB etc. I got a Mit 57732 Last year for bedroom from 1 Call and had warranty work done on it and had no problem from Mit. Thanks for clarifying. I was suspicious when that guy made that comment that all non-Amazon on-line stores would be considered as unauthorized retailers for Mitsubishi TVs. The safest thing would be to call Mitsubishi as you said or look for the "buy online" Web sites mentioned at www.mitsubishi-tv.com.
beowulf7 08-19-07, 02:14 PM try a wd-65733 in the search, I think more retailers will come up
I tried 57733 and it brought up Target and Crutchfield in addition to the Web sites I mentioned in a prior post. I still didn't see 1 Call listed there. Oh well, if I decide to buy a Mitsubishi TV from 1 Call, I'll first call up Mitsubishi to make sure 1 Call is an authorized retailer. Or I'll ask 1 Call.
tlbowerts 08-19-07, 04:05 PM beowulf7,
Yes, best thing to do is call and ask, this is what i did last year when i got the 57732 from 1 Call, and like i said, i had no problems from Mit on warranty, but things can change so better to be safe.
Hi, guys,
I am looking at the 734 series. I currently have a 52725 and LOVE IT, but we recently moved and in our new home there is significant glare from the window blinds during the day making it very difficult to watch tv. I know that the new models no longer have that plastic "anti-glare" shield. Is glare a factor with the 733-4 series? My windows are on the wall directly opposite and facing the TV, and there is no other setup possible.

I have the 65734 in a very bright room and have had no problems with glare, now if you have the sun right on it at times , i don't think it's any tv that will not have some glare.

kylejoseph 08-20-07, 01:26 AM i think he is saying that hhgregg has the tv for 1699. I dont know if posting in cryptic sentences is any different than just outright saying it as far as the forum rules go, you would have to check with someone who has been here longer. I think i actually broke the price posting rule a while back out of ignorance.

steinfire 08-20-07, 09:33 AM I am not able to quote your images as I am new to these boards. I will just quote your text. Why does green look so off in the last few baseball pics? All the other pictures look excellent.

Its because those pictures were with the tv set at the factory settings. It was straight out of the box and I had not touched the color settings yet. They have them all jacked up and it took me awhile but I have it set up right now and I still love it.
I am not experiencing the fan hum, but I do have something weird happening.
I'm getting that "popping" sound too....I though it was my HD-A20 b/c I only hear it on DVDs when the audio is changing. Is not enough to bother me I just was wondering about it also. I may have to turn the tv volume up and the surround sound volume way down and see if I here it on a dvd tonight.

thats a great deal!!!!.....400 less than what I paid for it back in the middle of June at the same store. Luckly I was able to get a free HD-DVD player with mine to make me feel better about what I paid for the tv.
nayrlladnar 08-20-07, 09:51 AM I just purchased a WD-65734 at HHGregg for $100 less than the cryptically posted price above. :)

It took me a couple minutes, but that's what I made it out to be, too. That's about the going price on the 57" model, so for the 65", that seems like a great price. However, I think it'd be too large for my family. Also, there's no "Greg" store here in TX.
beowulf7 08-20-07, 02:10 PM I went to BB yesterday to compare Samsung and Mitsubishi DLP TVs. The Samsung HL-T6176S was clearly brighter, but a little redder than the Mitsubishi 65733. I admit its stock super bright settings make it look better. Both TVs distort the picture when the screen is pushed in, but Samsung was a little worse. Both TV's cabinets look nice. I turned down the contrast ratio on the Samsung (initially set to 100) and turned it up on the Mitsubishi. Even then, the Samsung was still brighter. I ran out of time before I could also adjust brightness and other settings.

dponeill 08-21-07, 08:35 PM Anyone with one of these having any problems with uneven brightness of the screen? I just had a 57734 delivered today and it has very large differences in brightness from one part of the screen to another. The upper left corner (about a 8" square) is the dimmest and and about a 1 sq ft area below and to the right of center is the brightest. It's a very large difference, probably about 1/2 of the overall adjustment range of the contrast control. Overall the picture is very good with better colors and blacks than my JVC 56FN97. I also do not see rainbows which was the reason for selling a Toshiba DLP and getting the JVC. I wonder if this is a side effect of the idiotic push to make rear projectors as thin as possible regardless of the effect on performance?
Has anyone with a 65" seen this? I'm wondering if maybe they had to take more care with the larger screen sizes. If they are all like this I will have to just get a refund.

What your describing is not characteristic of a DLP. Color/White uniformity is typically very good on all manufacturers.
I would contact your local service provider to have them take a look at it.

That was one of my main reasons for going back to DLP. The Toshiba I had was very good in this respect, The JVC has a slight yellow tint in about a quarter of the screen and it got to the point where I was looking for it whenever I watched. I'll at least get it swapped out this week before giving up on it. If not for this I would be perfectly content with it.
danielwd 08-21-07, 11:09 PM I guess its time for me to spend my time on this forum - I am a proud owner of a new WD-73734 from C.C.. They refunded my money for my Samsung HLR6768W.
I read all the posts on this thread periodically throughout the day today. I just wanted to chime in and thank everyone who took the time to post information pertaining to the 734 series.
Now, C.C. is going to be delivering my set on thurs., two days from now. But I wanted to ask the forum two questions pertaining to my purchase.
1. On thursday, when the C.C. delivery team shows, here are some things I will be on watch for:
-Is the box unopened, tape in place (to make sure this is not a returned set)
-Listen to fan or wheel for any ridiculously loud noises
-Look for black specks on screen and flick at them on the screen to see if they fall off
-Take notice of pincushioning effects on sidebars and bottom/top bars (although I have read this can be fixed with the mit. service manual)
-Play material from a variety of sources BEFORE the delivery team leaves
-Possibly check the bulb hours to verify the tv is brand new
I bolded the last, because I am not sure how to do this. Someone previously posted to enter the service menu by hitting the menu button and 2457, then 2470 to check bulb hours?
Anything I've missed?
danielwd 08-21-07, 11:12 PM One more thing regarding my purchase. I feel like I got a pretty good deal on the tv, but they wanted $700 for a 4 year warranty and $350 for a 2 year warranty.
WHAT THE WORLD? I have 30 days to add an extended warranty, but what the world, $700 for a 4 year warranty. WHAT A RIP OFF.
Makes me want to call and cancel my purchase altogether. Any advice?
tlbowerts 08-21-07, 11:28 PM No, you don't hit menu 2457 then 2470, to check bulb hours just hit menu 2470, to get into service menu you hit menu 2457, as far as extended warrantys, you don't need to buy it at CC ,theirs a thread here for extended warrantys that tells you there you can buy warrantys for better price than this.

This would be a good way to gauge whether the tv is brand new wouldn't it, that is unless it had a replaced light engine.
I just want to make sure that I dont get a reboxed used tv sold as brand new. Someone on this thread was suspicious of this phenomenon and ended up returning what they thought was a used/returned tv, which looked suspiciously opened at some point in the past, but was sold as a brand new unit. I think that tv was blinking in and out of order within just one day of having it. They then returned it for a brand new set with an intact box with correct manufacturing tape.
tlbowerts 08-21-07, 11:57 PM Yes, would be a good way to gauge, as bulb hours should say 0, you will be fine, I would think somewhere like CC would have to much to lose to try things like this.
tlbowerts 08-22-07, 12:10 AM When you check bulb hours(menu 2-4-7-0) at top you will see initialize-power restore off-production mode off- net command software v370009- digital signal strength n/a, at bottom you will see 00000,this is bulb hours ,but will not say this, just 5 0's

Thank you so much for the info.
I will check it as soon as they get it in here and I get it hooked up. I will not let them leave till I am satisfied, I know that!
cdriccio 08-22-07, 09:43 AM Hey guys... Well I got mine it.
WD-57734
Can someone give me an idea of some good color/tint/other settings on it. I'm partially color blind and I'm not the greatest judge of how the stuff should look.
But I would like it to look good for those that come over to watch it.
Also... I had some initial problems with mine and was wondering if anyone has had these problems. I called the company I bought it from and they are shipping me a new one free of charge.
1. The fan makes this loud high pitched whining sound... sounds kinda like a CRT monitor on it's last leg if any of you know what I mean. The guy I spoke to about getting a new one said it was probably the fan bearing.
2. I currently have 3 inputs I use on a regular basis. 1 S-video, 1 component and 1 HDMI. The HDMI looks great, but the S-video and the component input have 2 horizontal lines of slightly distorted color that move up the screen. They are mostly noticeable when the screen is dark.
Has anyone seen either of these issues and are the common?
gotz2befosho 08-22-07, 09:43 AM Hi, Just got the 65734 from Frys and im excited! Does anyone have any settings or tweaks that i may try??
tlbowerts 08-22-07, 10:08 AM To cdriccio, gotz2bfosho
Its a good Tweaks and Setting thread for 2007 Mits that can get you started , all tv's are a little different so yours may not look the same as another with same settings ,but will get you going the right way, and then you have personal opinion also on what looks the best, but like i said take a look at this thead and some of the different settings your find here and take it from there.
cdriccio,
some have had a loud humming (noise) problem on these sets, on some it went away after 2-3 days ,but most took it back and try new one , so you did the best thing, has not been a big issue but has been a issue for some
cdriccio 08-22-07, 10:14 AM Thanks for the comforting about the noise. I was worried it was "normal" and ... that would be bad.
Can you link me to a page in the setting thread. Did a search and I saw the 2007 thread, but it was 100+ pages long.
I'll continue to look for now though.
Edit: Nevermind... I was looking at the wrong thread. I found it.
Thanks!

And is circuit city going to be carrying them?
danielwd 08-22-07, 01:28 PM What are the advantages of the 833 over the 734?
Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but the 833 has a better processing speed (refresh 120hz); the 734 is only in multiples of 20hz up to I think 60mhz.
I think the 833 has a bezzel that lights up blue also.

According to this: (http://reviews.cnet.com/projection-tvs/mitsubishi-wd-57734/4505-6484_7-32450672.html?tag=prod.txt.1)
733 series
Models
* 57-inch WD-57733 ($2,500)
* 65-inch WD-65733 ($2,999)
* 73-inch WD-73733 ($4,700)
Features
* Three HDMI 1.3 inputs with Simplay HD certification
* Three component video inputs (two rear, one front)
* USB port for photo viewing
734 series
Models
* 57-inch WD-57734 ($2,799)
* 65-inch WD-65734 (no pricing)
Features
* Same as the 733 series, plus:
* PerfectTint, for additional customization of display settings.
* NetCommand, which is designed to let the TV control a rack full of A/V gear, much like a universal remote.
* An additional front HDMI input.
"Diamond" 833 series
Models
* 57-inch WD-57833 ($3,399)
* 65-inch WD-65833 ($3,999)
* 73-inch WD-73833 ($5,899)
Features
* Same as the 734 series, plus:
* FireWire port
* RS-232 input
* Game FX, which is 3D gaming functionality, although there are no current titles that support it.
j66chevell 08-22-07, 02:30 PM I have a 57734 comming soon.
I have been reading over this thread and have a question for someone in the know:
The list on the 57734 is like $2700. I was told the MAP (minimum advertised price) was basically $300 less than that. Most sites I visit, make you place the TV in the shopping cart if they are selling under the MAP, but the link someone left to the HHgreg doesn't do that.
So how are they able to sell at such low prices and blatantly advertise it?
From most MAP contracts I've seen, you (the seller) get extra rebates and discounts by not selling and advertising below those figures and sellers that do risk losing profit or fines and possible loss of distributorship status.
The prices they have are so low it leads me to believe that there is huge profit margins in TV's (50-60% at list?) which doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the overall distributor-retailer-buyer scheme. Otherwise, they are losing lots of money, maybe hoping people buy extra stuff?

I might be wrong, but if I am not mistaken the Circuit City in my area is selling the 57734 for less 2,099 and the 73734 for 3,400.

Yes, your right about both, as far as 120Zh (for motion blur) i have both tv's now, and even that the 734 does not have it , i had no motion blur with it , and don't really see any different with PQ beween the two, but also have not played any games. or used it with PC yet. but as far as HD and SD no different, yes the blue lights are cool

Interesting because I thought that 120hz refresh rate was supposed to be hot stuff? It seems like you should be able to tell an obvious difference in any action sequence.
Maybe you have not compared both in terms of actions sequences. I am curious because I own a PS3 and enjoy video gaming. But even with normal video with an action sequence, it seems like you should be able to tell a difference?
Maybe the 120hz refresh isn't such a big deal after all then huh?

Like i said i have not done any gaming yet or hook it up to pc yet (833), but right now have them setting side-by-side, and see no difference in HD and SD , with same thing on both tv's, i have tweak with settings on both to get the PQ that i like the best.
as far as maybe the 120Hz isn't such a big deal after all, maybe , maybe not, may make more of a difference on gaming, will mess around with it this weekend!

wow, I'm surprised there's no PQ difference. I guess it's not like their CRT line where there's a definite difference b/t diamond and lower models.
any cabinet difference beside the blue light? what about the screen? does the 833 have less glare or better contrast or less SSE?
can you take a picture of the blue light in action? thanks.

OK, I just got this set, WD65734, yesterday. Looks beautiful except for one major thing. The Left 1/3 of the screen is Odd. The first 1/6 seems to pinch and the second 1/6 seems to stretch the image. I have gone into the service menu just to pop up a few test patterns and sure enough, the black and white one with the tiny squares confirms that those 2 sectors are not distinctly not right. I ordered online from a company from a company in MT and live in IN so I would prefer not to ship it back. I have not contacted Mitsubishi yet. Any ideas of the problem or cure?

You really need to call Mit to have someone look at it,as this is the 1st i hear of this, for sure not normal at all, may be something that could be fix in service menu, but if you don't know much about settings in menu, really should not mess around in there much.

I have not seen enough of these new TVs to really make an educated comment. However, I have reviewed the service manual several times.
I suggest you attempt the geometry adjustment. It seems pretty straight forward.
You enter the service menu, then select geometry alignment.
Then adjust 16 points and it will make a calculation.
If you screw things up, there is an option to reset back to the way it was.
good luck
Hipnotiq 08-23-07, 03:42 PM This may work? but from what he's saying not really a geometry problem, but more of how the the image is not being stretch the same over the screen,as far as geometry aligment, yes it is pretty straight farward, but what i'm saying is if you start messing around with things in there and don't know what your doing , do the wrong thing and end up with no pic it's hard to reset when i can't see anything.
The description sounds like a linearity issue. Geometry correction should resolve.
I just tried it out on a TV in our sales floor. Simple as pie.
You should have the service manual before you attempt. If you follow the steps there shouldnt be any problem.
danielwd 08-23-07, 09:33 PM Like i said i have not done any gaming yet or hook it up to pc yet (833), but right now have them setting side-by-side, and see no difference in HD and SD , with same thing on both tv's, i have tweak with settings on both to get the PQ that i like the best.
as far as maybe the 120Hz isn't such a big deal after all, maybe , maybe not, may make more of a difference on gaming, will mess around with it this weekend!
Well let me know how it goes as far as the gaming angle is concerned. I have a 73734 on the way here. But I have had this affinity to trade in my tv for something better and pay the difference - once the price of the newer, better tv drops to a level I like. The 73734 is actually an upgrade from a broken Samsung.
As long as Circuit City will play along, I'm game. If the 120hz refresh rate is such a big deal I would trade my 73734 in for the diamond and pay the difference.

elixer1669 08-25-07, 02:32 AM Just bought the 65734 today, kinda scared about the high pitch color wheel or what not sound. But i will wait and see. Since i work the weekends they are delivering it Monday from HHgregg. I believe i got a decent deal on it, about 4-500 off MSRP. Didnt get the stand, was going to search around for others. The guys said they can take almost 200 off teh stand for me. which im game with. GOod to have a connection to get decent prices. What things should i look for when it gets delivered? I know the high pitch noise. what else you reccommend i look for, i beleive i have 10 days to figure out any problems and what not before im stuck with it for good. Thanks , a great site from what i have read so far.

look at the box. make sure it looks new and hasn'tt been opened then re-taped up (happened once to somebody). check for any physical damage. make them wait while you unpack and plug the TV in. have a video source ready so you can have a quick look at picture. check for excessive fan noise, serious bowing, or tilting of the picture. look for smudges or blobs on the screen. don't have an anxiety attack :)
beowulf7 08-25-07, 08:23 PM ^ Also, elixer should check how many hours are on the bulb. (Someone here, I think tlbowerts, explained how to check this.) The bulb hour counter should be at 0. Good luck taking delivery of your DLP TV. :)
OK, I just received my new 57734 yesterday. The picture is awesome, and all my problems with glare from the window blinds I had with my old 52725 are solved! Has anyone had any luck with the settings yet. I'm curious what color settings people have found work best with the PS3 for Blu-Ray movies. Also, are people using the dark detailer or turning off? Also, I noticed the PS3 has a setting for superwhite and full vs limited range RGB. Are these features capable in the 57734?

I got mine delivered on sat. I did NOT notice any noise from the fan, that is until later in the day. Then I could hear it easily as it was a high-pitched screetching noise.
Then the next day, no noise. I have yet to hear it again.
I also have noticed that the screen cabinet (the outside black bordering) was not constructed very well. It is noticeable in my entertainment center because my entertainment center is made to go flush up against the cabinet. This arrangement doesn't work out very well because Mitsubishi did not construct the black cabinet to be completely level throughout. There is a dip in the middle which causes a marginal hole between the cabinet and the t.v. cabinet. I am not happy about that, but I guess I can live with it.
Also, the screen does bow back a little. The very top is about an 1/8th of an inch bent backwards. Not very noticeable, but I do wonder if this is what causes the ever-so slight bow in the black bars when the tv broadcasts in SD. On some channels the left grey bar even has a fractional black bar that travels alongside the grey bar up and down.
So far I am happy with my WD73734.

Yeah but really, if someone was slick, they could reset the bulb hours in the menu.
I doubt it would happen, but you never know.

The manual shows that the front connections and number of HDMI inputs is different, but do you know if any major items are missing that are in the 734? (i.e. DarkDetailer). Thanks again.

yeah i guess the darkdetailer...didnt think about perfecttint,
but darn only 2 hdmi...wont matter if you get a nice 1.3a switching receiver or autosensing switchbox.
still it sounds like a 731 with the dvi scrapped from it.
perhaps its still there and you just need to solder on a dvi connector :) and enable in service menu

beowulf7 08-27-07, 01:57 PM It's a little frustrating how the 734's price is being fluctuated so much on a week-to-week basis. I hope I find a good Labor Day sale. :) At this point, I don't think I'd pay the hefty premium for an 833 since I don't play games and don't need Cable Card, PIP, and glossy case, and hopefully don't need the anti-glare coating.
ghatothkach 08-27-07, 05:28 PM hi
does anyone know how good a job this TV does with standard Analog TV signals, and standard analog video out of my DV camera, or the video out of a VCR ? (how good is the scaler / upconverter ? I know its not Silicon Optix or Genesis Microship!!)
Also, the other question I have is if anyone has tried to play DivX/Xvid from a PC to this TV. The only way it seems you can hook this set up to your PC is through HDMI (no DVI inputs). Actually if you did hookup a PC somehow to the TV and somehow set the resolution to 1900x1080, then when you do a full screen on the PC, who is doing the upconversion the PC or the TV ? If the PC is doing it then how good/bad is it compared to the TV doing it ?

Yeah, everyone that has recently purchased a 73734 needs to be aware and continue shopping around in order to price match. I purchased mine last week and alread HH Gregg is $300 lower than what I paid. But I would not have known if I didnt pursue the set at HH Gregg.
I've already called Circuit City and they'd said they'd price match and give me some more off.
And by the way, if you are interested in this set, you need to be cautious about waiting till labor day. I am wondering if there will be any left.

Also, someone mentioned something about gaming on these models, but it was never clarified. Is there a problem with gaming on these units?
Thanks!
Hi all, I am completely new to This HD-DLP thing.
I received my new set on Sat.,while the so called installers (these guys were strictly truck drivers)
were hooking up my set,the tv started a poping noise in the area of bottom center of the set. It lasted a very short time, and has never returned.
They had a hard time setting up the tv, with my dish network system.
My question is,have you been aware of this noise
if so what is it,is it something i should return the set for.
Also, Do any of you set the bulb to it's lower setting. Any help I would be grateful for.
Thanks,Duke

no 120Hz refresh...but neither does the 734
1 less hdmi port on front panel ...733 has component and usb on front.
No netcommand
No Dark detailer
No PerfectTint
the 733 is a poor choice. Might wanna opt for the 61 LED or the a3000. If your like me you probally dont wanna give up the 4" difference
You could order the 833 diamond through magnolia somehow but you will pay a bit more for it out of pocket.
All about what you want
GOod luck.

The 2 big things that the 734 has over the 733 is PerfecTint and DarkDetailer( for black levels ) also 734 has 4 HDMI ,733 has 3, and some other small things. The only one BB has on their web is the 733.

elixer1669 08-27-07, 11:36 PM ok received the 65734 today, via hhgregg delivery. Have to say, it is a nice BIG fit in my apt lol. But anyways the box was factory sealed, saw the delivery guy take the white straps off the box before opening it. turned it on hook up just regular cable and picture was good and everything, not even HD. Dont notice any bending, or anything in the picture, nor do i see black spots etc during white scenes. But i do have the high pitch sound, assuming the fan or color wheel etc. Now my question is how long should i wait to see if it goes away before i either attempt to get a new one, or just deal with it. The sound can be quite disturbing especially during low sound moments. What do you guys think i should do? HHgregg told me i have ten days to determine if i want to keep it or not. Other than the noise, the picture is great, plugged up the PS3, Ninja Gaiden looked great, Planet Earth HD is awesome, as well as 300 and HD football. Just the noise is disturbing. Looks as if i wasnt a lucky one in the noise area. Let me know what you think guys. Thanks

I would wait 2 days to see if it go's away, if it does not don't deal with it , get another one , these are great when working right.
The only one BB has on their web is the 733.
Are you implying that at a brick and mortar BB they may have it or it could be ordered?
My issue is that because I had the Service Plan on my Tosh, and BB is replacing it, I have to purchase at BB because I will have a $1,400 credit toward a new television. Right now the 733 is roughly $2000. So even if I got a 733, I'd still be going from a Tosh 42" 720p/1080i CRT to a Mitsu 65" 1080p DLP. I would assume that even though it doesn't have a few options, if push came to shove, and they couldn't get me the 734 it would still be a major upgrade. Unless there is a similarly priced unit in the same size range that would give me those options. But like someone said about the 61". Those extra 4"s are a lot of tv. :P
brophog 08-28-07, 03:08 AM The big box stores do not order you a set simply because they sell that manufacturer. You get what they have, in this case, the 65733.
steinfire 08-28-07, 12:20 PM I thought I had a big problem with my 65734 this weekend but before calling Tech support(and I dreaded this) I tried a few things.
I got up Sunday morning and was watching tv before church, well everything was fine and I had recorded a Sportscenter that was on earlier so I went into my DVR and started watching it. Well I fast fowarded through a commercial and then noticed no sound at all coming from the set. I stopped the program and tried the live tv program....no audio. I turned the tv on and off .....no audio. I checked the settings on the tv through the menu and everything was fine but still no sound. I tried the audio through my reciever and no audio. I did a system reset and nothing.
Well I had to leave and go to church and all I could thing about the whole service is what is wrong and why did this have to happen a week before college football started. I was thinking I will have to call Mitsu and they will have to send out a tech which may take up to two weeks just for him to look at it. I was going to have to watch all my college football games on the little tv.............noooooooooooooo.
When I got home I flipped through the owners manual a few times and retraced my steps. Then I remembered that I had a spare HDMI cable(the one that came with the Dish reciever) and was about to swap it out and then a light bub popped on. I haven't even tried to see if the HD-DVD player of the X-BOX had sound. So I tried it and they both had sound!!! Whoo Hoo....it wasn't the tv!!!!
Then I unplugged the DVR-622 from the wall and let it reset and turned the tv back on with all my fingers and toes crossed and there it was......I had audio again. :D I was soooo happy to have my sound back. Its hard to beleved how crazy you can get when you think that your tv is broken a week before college football season.
But i do have the high pitch sound, assuming the fan or color wheel etc. Now my question is how long should i wait to see if it goes away before i either attempt to get a new one, or just deal with it. I still love this tv and if your lucky enough to get one without the loud humming sound then hang on to it. If the humming is too much then see if you can get another one before the return policy it up.

The HHGreg deal I read about seems really great. Unfortunately for me, however, I live far away from an HHG store (I'm in TX). :(
So it basically comes to price comparison shopping on the Web. I really wanted to have an HDTV in place in time for the NFL Week 1 games (specifically Giants/Cowboys on 9/9). But it looks like that won't happen in time. : \ Worst case, I'll watch it on my 20" CRT as I've been watching preseason football so far. :o
danielwd 08-28-07, 06:14 PM ok received the 65734 today, via hhgregg delivery. Thanks
I got my 73734 just this past saturday, and just like you, I scanned the whole delivery process from the time they got the truck door open until that tv hit my entertainment center.
I too am happy with the hd pic. The sd pic leaves a little to be desired in my humble opinion, although I am not sure if I have the settings right. I have yet to have anyone advise me on settings for the 734 models. I started a thread yesterday, but I have not checked it yet.
I too noticed the fan noise, but not until later in the day after the set had been on for some hours. The noise was loud but barely noticeable with the PS3 noise and the volume from the tv. Then the next day, the noise was completely gone. I have not heard it since.
elixer1669 08-28-07, 11:24 PM Yea, my set is quite as can be for about the first 15 minutes or so, than you can slowly start to hear it get louder. I have been hoping it goes away as yours did. But i also havent been watching it much between working and golfing the last twodays. So im going to wait till tomarrow or the next day. IF it hasnt stopped, than ill get another one delivered to try again, which sucks, the PQ is great, have no real complaint on it and i have yet to even touch the settings. I would hope it can only get better.
wcain143 08-29-07, 10:55 AM Over the weekend my wife and I went to HHGregg to check out their sets. We saw they had a sale on the 65734 for 1999.99 and of course the sales reps swarm you when your eyes get that twinkle in them! I did the normal meet and greet with the sales rep and said I was looking for a little bit cheaper tv than this. Since the new tv's require a stand, I said that I didn't want to pay that much for one and still have the stand purchase too. My wife liked the wooden stand that was 399 so the dollars started adding up quickly. I usually get the extended warranty because it ends up being worth it in the long run which was another 399. so the total was heading well over what I had budgeted for. But with me being the tightwad that I am, I told him I didn't want to pay over 2400 for everything including tax. He scurried back to his manager and after about 10 minutes of drooling over the picture, he came back and said it's a deal. the TV came out to be $1685 the stand was 199 ( I think a little less) and the 5yr warranty 399. with tax and everything came to 23 hundred and some change. Overall, I am stunned with the quality of this unit. I haven't heard the hum of the lamp yet so I think I'm good there but the xbox 360 fan is irritating because I have it in the center with the mesh. All in all, I think I got a good deal. Now has anyone found the perfect tweaks for this yet. I've found the blues to be a little exaggerated.

It's a good Tweaks and setting threads here (for 732,831,734 and 833)that will get you started ,some good setting on 1st 2-3 pages of thread
j66chevell 08-29-07, 12:09 PM I tried the settings in that thread on my just recieved 57734 and they made the colors much worse. The settings for the contrast and brightness seemed ok.
I'm just going to try the AVIA dvd next chance I get.
jganson 08-29-07, 03:11 PM Those of you who got the 73": What are you using for a stand? It doesn't look like Mits has one specifically for the 73" models.
gotz2befosho 08-29-07, 03:29 PM I have the 65734 and when i change the channel, i can hear a lil sound that goes pop everytime. Even when the tv is on mute and i change the channel, i hear a pop. Im connected to directtv via HDMI. Has anyone experienced this before?? please helpppp........
HeavyArms 08-29-07, 08:40 PM I just bit the bullet thursday and got my 65734 delivered today. I'm too am getting the high pitched (rather shrill) sound and I'm hoping it goes away on it's own (I'm considering letting it run for 2-3 days as well).
Aside from that, I'm VERY happy with the picture quality (even SD!). I managed to swipe mine from "The Big Screen Store" which he pitched at $2400 which included an extended warranty and I got a little $ break on the mitsu stand and then some more off for buying everything together cash.
I had a small issue with delivery and all in all it wound up at $2675 for the tv, ext. serv. contract and the stand.
......... now if this damned shrill high pitched sound would magically go away I'd be happier than a pig in, um, crap.
seanpatrickb 08-30-07, 12:42 AM I plan on picking one up in the next few days and this thread has me awfully excited to get it hooked up to my ps3.
I've had my 65734 about a month now. I finally went into the service menu on my 65734 and did the Manual Keystone Geometry. It made a HUGE improvement. I had a little pincusion on 4:3 and that is now gone. Also, the top right and left were bowed up a little. Not anymore! It looks fantastic. I found it best to focus on one or two areas at a time and make small adjustments. Then just going back in again and again until it looked great.
I noticed too that in the service menu above 'Manual Keystone Geometry' there was an option to 'Restore Keystone Geometry'. I didn't do it, but that would probably restore it to factory right? There was also an option to back up the Keystone Geometry.
The TV looks PERFECT now!
elixer1669 08-30-07, 12:32 PM Ok tv ws delivered Monday, its now thursday. THe bulb life hour counter im assuming is the 00007 number int he lower left side of the screen? after hitting menu 2470. Anyways so the tv has about 12 hrs of use so far, the high pitch noise starts after about twenty minutes or so of use. again assuming its the fan because of the delayed start but who knows. I called HHgregg and they said to call this other number to have someone ccome out and look at it to see if its fixable and or if it should just be replaced. So Im going to call them a lil later in the day, if the noise is still there later than ill be having a service dude come out. Ill keep ya guys informed.

nenothtu 08-31-07, 02:28 AM OK, I just received my new 57734 yesterday.
Where did you get your 57734 at? I've just gotten interested in that model and most place I've looked online so far has it listed around $1,800. However in my local HH Gregg today they had one listed at $1,599 but said they would sell it for $1,399. I don't understand how they're selling it that cheap.

I thought I read a new model was coming out right before Black Friday. Don't quote me on that though. If that is true however, maybe they are trying to empty stock before it arrives.
videobruce 08-31-07, 08:36 AM Anyone that has tried a AVHDD (1394 hard drive) with any of these sets care to report their experiance?

That is insanely cheap. Too bad the B&M stores in TX charge a lot more, although Fry's had a good sale for the 65734 earlier this week that someone told me about, but I didn't know about it early enough. I wish I could just call HHGreg and buy over the phone and have them ship me the TV. I wonder if that would work.
VanMardigan 08-31-07, 02:27 PM I just bought a 57734 last week, but I was reading the other mitsu 1080p tv thread and I'm worried about the longevity of this set. Should I be worried?
stingrae 08-31-07, 04:05 PM I am having a 73734 delievered tomorrow and I am wondering whether I should connect the PS3 directly to the TV via HDMI or send it through the SR-674 AVR via HDMI?
seanpatrickb 08-31-07, 07:53 PM Got the 65734 today at hhgregg for 1600$ and am blown away. Right now i only have a 360 hooked up to it because i dont have the hdmi cord for my ps3 yet and havent moved it into my room for cable, but just the picture on the 360 in 1080i is enough to justify the purchase. I do hear the bulb sound, but it doesnt really bother me at all.

If your asking if you will have a problem with it at some time ,no one can tell you this, and this go's for any tv you would buy, If your asking how long it will last before you need another one, again no one can tell you this, no matter what tv you would buy. Dlp and SXRD has only been around about 3
years, and it's lots out there that is 3 years old (Mit, Sony etc) still in used , will they last 10years? no one knows, I think most like to get 4-5 years out of them anyway. My dad has a mit that is 3 years old , and has had no problems with it at all, still loves it. This is why you buy Extended warrantys, you have a problem ,they fix it ,if it can't be fix ,you get a new one. this way no need to worry!
seanpatrickb 09-01-07, 01:02 AM Ok, the noise is kinda loud, when i get back in town i'm gonna go and see if they have any without. I think once i get it with everything else it wont be too bad, but i rather have one without it if i can.

I have the 65734 and 65833 and have no noise , humming at all ,even on mute, i can't hear anything.
seanpatrickb 09-01-07, 01:57 AM I'm not sensitive to it, its pretty loud, just bad luck i guess. I'll exchange it one time and as long as the others not any worse, it doesn't bother me that much. I have it in a room with a ps3, an oc'ed computer, and another tv, but i see how it could definitely be a problem for most. I'm actually pretty surprised mits hasn't fixed this yet.
beowulf7 09-01-07, 02:22 PM I called up Vanns to see if they'll price match the 57734 to HHGregg. Unfortunately, they will not. :(
Circuit City has the 73734 for under 3k this weekend! WOW
stingrae 09-01-07, 06:39 PM CC delivered this TV and all I can say is that it is a really awesome tv.
I don't have any discernable noise on the TV. Blu-ray is unbelievable...DVD is extemely good. Standard cable is horrible, but that is the signal not the TV...although it is barely watchable imo.
The only gripes so far on the tv is there is an annoying lag when you change inputs and the tv makes a popping noise when it transitions from input to input. Glare is a problem on this screen as any natural light reflects off teh screen, regardless of the amount of light. As an example, it is 6:30Pm where I live and my screen is filled with light from small opening at the top of my bay windows. The Sony's do a far better job of controlling glare. Gotta figure out a solution. If you have a bright lit tv area, this wouldn't be a good tv, IMO.
So the surround is being hooked up next week, Roman's chairs should be here in the next two adn then we can see what this baby can do.
And yes, CC has an amazing price on the 73734 this weekend. I got mine for $300 less than the price you are referring to including tax and delivery.
Hi all, Help me out with this noise in the "734" sets. I can here the fan making a low to moderate noise when in use. Is this the same noise that people have returned sets for? or is it somthing else? Thanks, Duke

If you have moderate or loud noise, Mit is saying this can be fix in the field, and issue has been resolved by Mit, was told this by Mit sevice tech, and heared it from 2 others so far. If you have a problem with the noise, return it for another, or have it look at!

I agree with you in regards to standard cable, it is really bad.
One thing that has helped on my 73734 is to use the s-video for the input instead of hdmi. That makes it bearable.
What do you mean an "annoying lag" changing inputs? I think that is normal in any HDTV sets. My Samsung did that too.
What I have noticed is a HUGE lag in changing the channels. Now in terms of changing CHANNELS, for which you may or may not perceive any issues, I have found it to be a smoother transition when I change my cable box 'output format' to broadcast in ONLY 1080i. In this format there is little interruption for me and I am hypothesizing that any "annoying lag" in terms of changing channels is from the tv trying to figure out whether to accept 720p or 1080i from the cable box. When the cable box is set to output ONLY 1080i I have perceived little lag at all when I change channels.
Concerning the reflection of light, I personally think the 73734 does a good job of it. I think it does better than the Samsung I had but only slightly.
Now as far as the cost is concerned I am heading up to C.C. a little later to see if I need another price match. They already did one price match for HHGREGG because they had a sale that put it at 3K exactly which was a little less than what I paid.
TommyDeVito 09-02-07, 02:19 PM Need some help regarding one of these sets. My local Conns has this thing for $2999 and 36 mos 0%. I've been putting off the purchase for a long time now because I wanted 1.3 HDMI and the LED light engine. BB has the Samsung 61" LED DLP but it's the 87 model which is HDMI 1.2. The Mitsu I'm referring to is the 73733 model. Does this model indeed have HDMI 1.3? It's the 73" so how much viewing distance do I need? Wall to wall I have 15 feet of space and I'm wondering if the TV will be too big. The theater room is 13' X 15'. How long will the bulb last? What cost is the bulb to replace? And comparatively, how much power does the set use? TIAFAR, I wish I had more time to research but I need to get this done today.

I'll answer some of your questions.
Check out Cruchfield Advisor's (http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/S-LPbqeF1zgMf/learningcenter/home/TV_placement.html) screen size recommendation. Also, check out this calculator (http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html) for optimal TV size distance placement.
I believe all 3 sizes of the 734 TVs use the same power, according to the spec sheet I saw on www.mitsubishi-tv.com. The bulb will probably last 2,000-3,000 hours. You can get an extended warranty if that concerns you. All of the Mitsubishi TV models you mentioned support HDMI 1.3.
Hope this helps.
beowulf7 09-02-07, 05:22 PM Great price at Fry's on the 57734. Now only if I had an SUV or p/u truck to pick up that big, bad boy! :(

Thanks. I've been futzing around for 6 years waiting, waiting, and waiting. I pulled the trigger today on the 733 for an awesome price and 36 months with 0 interest. I just couldn't pass up the financing arrangement. I also picked up a Samsung Upconverting DVD player while I wait for the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray wars to settle down some.
I have one question if anyone can answer, can't find it on the Mitsu site...
Can I use a cable card with this guy or do I need a HD set top box from TW?
stingrae 09-02-07, 08:16 PM Okay,
I can't find it in the manual or on this site or on the web.

You need to do set up on your tv for over the air channels, and a antenna to pick them with.
stingrae 09-02-07, 08:51 PM I have run scans using the air antenna and I am coming up empty.
tlbowerts 09-02-07, 10:03 PM I have run scans using the air antenna and I am coming up empty.
What kind of antenna do you have? it sounds like it's not picking up anything!
Where do you live? how close do you live to any Hd channels antennas? All of these have a lot to do with what you can pick up!
stingrae 09-02-07, 10:19 PM Do I need a seperate antenna?
I am in Northern Virginia so I can't imagine that reception would be a problem. I thought these tv's would automatically pick up the signal.

Yes, they have a built in tuner, but you still need a antenna of some kind to pick up a signal! with living in Northern Virginia, a indoor antenna should be fine, some have even been able to pick up some HD channels with rabbit ears.
stingrae 09-02-07, 11:01 PM Tuner not antenna...that explains it. Thank you very much.
beowulf7 09-03-07, 11:50 AM Tuner not antenna...that explains it. Thank you very much.
Yes, like tl said, you need both the ATSC tuner (which all new TVs now have) and an antenna. To find out what kind of antenna you need, go to www.antennaweb.org and find out how far you are from the local HD transmitters. You'll be prompted to punch in your address and describe your surroundings (such as if your house is blocked off by large buildings and trees).
Tommy D, congrats on your order.
I'm thinking of picking up the 57734 from the local Fry's if I can borrow a friend's minivan. Will this TV (in the original packaging) fit in a minivan if the rear seats are removed? TIA.
rockstarbanana 09-04-07, 12:48 AM I bought a 65734 at Fry's on sale yesterday, had it delivered this morning. Have people had more luck going through Mits or the place of purchase to get it replaced/repaired?

Mit tech is saying this issue can be fix in your home , and on ones being send out to stores now the issue have been resolved, but if it was me and only 2-3 days old , i'd replaced it with another!! Also the humming does go away sometimes in 2 to 7 days.
It's a very good settings and tweaks thread here for Mit, 732,734,831 amd 833's, look at the 1st 2 to 3 pages

the only way to check the build date, is to look at back of tv, nothing on box that i know of, not all of the ones out have this issue, like i have the 734 and 833 and had no humming at all from 1st day!!
jeffbarnett513 09-04-07, 11:26 AM tlbowerts,
How can you read this thread and then tell me in the HLT-67xx thread that
"Only a small % of the 734's had the loud humming"
You seem to be very proud of the fact that neither of your sets have the humming. That's great, but if you constantly have to throw that out as proof that hum-free sets exist then your "small %" statement is certainly questionable.

Thanks Wulf! They brought it to the house yesterday, along with my new theater furniture (3 side by side recliners with cup holders, $1k for all 3!).
As I stated prior I bought an upconverting (1080i) Samsung DVD player to hold me over for now while I wait for the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray wars to subside.
I had everything plugged up including all 7 speakers to my surround in about an hour. I'm only running the DVD player at the moment, TW won't be out for another week to swap my DVR out for a HD box. So until I get my HDMI cables in the mail I'm running at 420p on the DVD player. It looks good but my friend that owns a home audio/video business in Tucson said the picture will be "6 times" better when I plug it up HDMI instead of components. I can't wait. At 420p watching 'Batman Begins' is wasn't bad at all so at 1080i I'm sure it's going to be much, much better PQ.
I turned the lamp to the energy saving mode and turned the brightness down to standard instead of the bright setting. Did both of these for lamp life. With the lamp on energy saving mode it does take the DLP a minute or so to boot up but that is more than acceptable to me as it will be used for mostly films and not much else. I haven't changed one picture setting yet other than what I mentioned. I do need to find the setting where the tv will turn itself off if it isn't receiving a signal as I don't like that at all and prefer to turn on/off myself.
I'm very happy with the set so far. The room that is in is 13X15 and I have the TV along the 15' side. Considering the depth of the TV I'm right around 13.5' viewing distance and it's fine. The 65" would have been fine but only 18 mos 0% financing available on it. The 73" had 36 months so they got me there :D My friend in Tucson keeps regular contact with the best repair shop in town (he knows the owner). He gave me some advice via the repair shop owner. "Don't watch the TV for more than 4 hours straight......if you are going to watch it longer, then turn it off for 10 minutes to let it cool down then you can fire it back up........also never move the TV after it's been on.......if you have to move it for whatever reason let it power down and cool off for a while before you move it." That shop owner said the people who have problems are the people who have their sets going for many, many hours a day. He said that the people who follow a couple simple rules are the ones who aren't changing bulbs and aren't having problems. I don't know if he is right but I will follow the advice. Looking forward to my HDMI cables and better resolution later this week and will report back.......under 3k for this TV is a good deal IMO. Been researching and following the market for almost 7 years now. So happy to be an owning member instead of watching from the cheap seats :D
Ricknknox 09-04-07, 02:53 PM Purchase WD-57734 this week. Purchased from HH, I'm against wasting my money for Ext Warranty, but since it's a little more then the price of a bulb, figure it was worth it. Upon turning the unit on, The image quality was unreal. I'll give it a WOW factor. but to my horror, in the middle of the screen was a nice 2 inch spec of dust.
My guess is it's on the mirror, not the back of the screen, I did the finger tap, No good. We went by HH and they are replacing the unit, I figure they would send over a tech with a can of air. The Sale person stated they just box it back up and send back to the supplier. Not sure that it was this easy to replace due to being just purchased or the ext warranty. Either way, we told them about it yesterday, Delivery truck is coming with a new set today.
First thing I would recommend is search for Cal setting on the other forums. I expected it would be setup for Store viewing. But the contrast was really cranked up. I will purchase a Calibration CD, "Will take suggestions on a good one". But the Cal setting from other users are very helpful, and makes allot better picture then nothing, Will post mine when I can.
The second issue I read is the Fan Noise. I could not hear it, This set was extremely quiet. Might have a different opinion tonight when I get the second set. but Fan is not a issue. will look for build date on the new set.
I wish to think everyone for there opinions, I have been reading this site for almost a year, trying to figure out what the best system to purchase for the price, and most importantly for me. So I will return the favor write the good and the bad as time goes on.
TommyDeVito 09-04-07, 04:03 PM Rick for reference sake, my 73733 is silent thus far as well :crossesfingers:
rfaranda 09-04-07, 05:37 PM Picked up my 73734 yesterday. Quiet so far....
ramazur 09-04-07, 10:23 PM I am going to guess why the fans make the noise that drives you guys crazy: it is because the manufactures of TVs, PCs, etc use the cheapest crap they can just to get the product out the door. I had the same problem with my PC. Solution? I replaced the original fan that used bushings with a $20 fan on ball bearings. Cheap bushing-type fans make noise because the shaft of the rotor rattles in a bushing if they don't fit well and they don't beacuse to machine these two precisely costs money. So here is an idea for anyone who loves the picture but hates the noise: order a fan from Mitsu parts just for dimensions and voltage and get a ball-bearing equivalent from Newark or Allied and have your local service place install it for you. Or replace an otherwise perfect TV set with another perfect set that uses the same POS of a fan that costs a buck or less. Voiding a warranty is a separate issue so procede with caution.
renesisX 09-05-07, 02:38 AM I just got a 57734 setup in my house and I have noticed some noise but nothing that makes me want to go insane. However, i set one up earlier today and noticed a decent sounding shrill, so I have an idea as to how they are working.

I just bought the 57734 from HH Gregg today also but haven't picked it up yet though. I got it for $1,399. Did you get a similar price or better at your store? I also purchased the 3-year warranty for $299.00. I figured like you that it was probably worth it since it covered everything including bulb replacement and they also send someone out once a year to clean the inside of the tv for dust. How much does a bulb for this tv cost??
captainjy 09-05-07, 03:04 PM Man, you guys are scaring me. We bought a 52628 almost 2 years ago and have had ongoing flickering problems with it since day one. Just yesterday, Mits said they would replace it with a WD57734. After reading many posts, it sounds like there may be even more problems. I saw the screenshots of the PQ and the 734 looks great, but the lound humming doesn't sound good. Wow, Mits has really gotten bad.

Don't worry about it, some are making to big of a deal about the loud humming, if it has loud humming, get it fix,or take it back for another,it has been said Mit have resolved this issue(the loud humming that some had)
Ricknknox 09-05-07, 03:40 PM Last time I looked the bulbs where around $350, I need to check back with HH, I paid $1599, :). Also paid $299 for ext warranty. they where out of Replacement TV's have too wait till thursday,

I agree especially if you have a surround sound system and a gaming system.
My PS3 is 5 times louder than my tv.
Same with my 360. It's much louder than my 65734. The only time I hear the TV is late at night when everyone is asleep and I have the sound down insanely low. And even then it's just a faint whir of a fan that I hear. I've never actually noticed any sound from the TV during normal TV/Movie viewing.
beowulf7 09-05-07, 06:30 PM I'm now a proud owner of the WD-57734 DLP TV. I picked it up last night from Fry's for a very good price. If a neighbor can give me a hand to put it on my TV stand, I'll set it up tonight. :) I hope I don't have the dreaded fan noise.
The date on the box says 7/9/07.
seanpatrickb 09-05-07, 09:13 PM Mine is a new one, and it definitely has the fan noise. I'll give it a few more days and if it still has it swap it out. Even with the noise, i am very happy with this tv.
renesisX 09-05-07, 10:20 PM Honestly I don't really hear the TV. At first I noticed it because I was trying to look for it since it seemed to be an issue. Sitting hear now though it's quiet as can be, definitely not louder than my old Toshiba (50HM66).
Hi All,
I just purchased a WD65734. My question is about the stand for it. All the ones I have seen for it, are only 21-22" high. I would like something around the 30-35" height. Would I regret getting a stand that high (providing that i can even find something like that)? Do any of you guys that have a stand in the 21" height range wish that your stand was HEIGHER? Please let me know. Thanks
Dan
elixer1669 09-06-07, 09:25 AM I just got off the phone with the people that HHgregg had me call that were going to come and look at it and deem it either fixable or just replace it. The guy on the phone said it was the cooling fan in the light engine(high pitched noise problem), and rather me have to wait around a few hours for him to say thats what it was, he said he is just going to order the part from Mits and just come in and install it on the same visit early next week. Is that what the problem is? or are they just pulling my chains ? Let me know guys so i can figure out what to do. Thanks
videobruce 09-06-07, 09:26 AM Questions;
What version do the 2007 models (731, 732, 831 etc.) of TV Guide OnScreen have?
A couple of eariler posts mentioned the slow response time of the menu. Press a button, wait for the response. I'm not just refering to channel changes either. Any comments here?
denverdoc 09-06-07, 09:51 AM Will be getting my 65734 before the w/e--I'm gonna hold off a while (waiting for the sammy uni) before committing to high def source player. I have a great in its day DVD player with 480p--my question to owners is whether the TV's internal upscaling is good enuf to really enjoy my DVD collection or should I spring for something like an Oppo in the meantime.
PS: I won't buy an HD player that won't do BD as I see it a vote against the potentially superior BD format. (I'm still burnt over having VHS become the de facto standard....)

Yes, This is same thing i was told by a mit serivce tech, that it was the cooling fan that had a high pitched noise ( loud humming) in some of the sets, and was told that this issue has been resolved on sets being send out to stores now,so by what he said should not be a issue anymore, anyone that has the loud humming should call mit and have it fix or replace, no need to put up with it!
HeavyArms 09-06-07, 10:34 AM Hello,
I was told that it was the color wheel itself that is the source of the loud screaching, as it spins at approx. 30,000 rpm and sometimes they aren't aligned correctly.
Anyway, I'll be having mine replaced soon. After about a week and a half, the sound did get quieter, but it still sounds like I have a big transformer (the electrical component not the robot ;-) ) sitting in the corner.
I can say it's not the fan (on my set) because when turning off the tv, after the 30 second "oops I didn't mean to turn the tv off" period, the color wheel shuts down and the sound goes away, but the fans keep running for another minute to cool off the bulb.
Those fans (again, on my set at least) are producing negligible sound.
---
And when the set was at its loudest the evening it was delivered, I could hear the screaching over top my running 360 pumping sounds through real speakers (not built into the tv) playing Rainbow 6 in the casino and over top 2 of my computers running a few feet away (totaling probably 10-12 fans between the 2 computer cases).
This noise was no "mere" fan noise. I gave the set the opportunity to quiet down and it did, but not sufficiently enough for my taste.
So hopefully I'll get a newer set in a few days and be 100% happy with the set instead of 95% :)
---
I just wanted to clarify what I'm experiencing as some people are equating negligible fan noise to a very different problem with the color wheel/motor.

Thanks. And we have a 360 as well and it's pretty loud as Vader said which will probably be louder than our TV. TV is coming Saturday, suprisingly. Looking forward to it!

Yea, some say fan, some color wheel, but good thing is it can be fix, and they are saying the issue has been resolved, maybe it was both, who knows, just as long as they take care of it!
beowulf7 09-06-07, 01:59 PM For anyone interested, the box dimensions for the WD-57734 are: 38"H x 56"W x 20"D.

Good point. I have been waiting anxiously for a customer to call be about the noise issue so I can troubleshoot it, but noone has complained to us yet.
I checked several units in our shop and store floor and they all seem shockingly quiet.

Yes, I'm referring to the brown box the TV comes in, not the cabinet dimensions. The box size is important for those who want to transport the TV, as opposed to just having the TV shipped to their home. I asked the Fry's salesman to measure it (which I rounded up to the next inch) to make sure it could fit in my friend's minivan.

I got this stand from BB.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8193554&type=product&id=1165609791326
It's a little over 22 inches high like most of the others. It puts the vertical center of the screen directly at eye level for me. I think if it were another 8 to 13 inches higher that would be too high.
What I liked about the stand above is that it has LOTS of room for components and the shelves are very sturdy. Mine holds the receiver, center channel, dvd, cable box, Wii, 360 and there's still plenty of room for another component or two. And none of them are stacked. The 65 inch also fits nicely as the TV width is the same as the shelf widths.
videobruce 09-06-07, 11:21 PM With the lamp on energy saving mode it does take the DLP a minute or so to boot up It's not the lamp, but the internal tuner that is in energy saving mode. It's off, not in stanby for the TVGOS download.

Oh, no prob. :)
Anyway, a neighbor stopped by last night to give me a hand to place my 57734 on the TV stand. I made the appropriate connections and fired up the TV. I have the dreaded high-pitched whine. :( Today is Day 2 and it's still there. I'll be out this weekend, but hopefully next week, after x hours of using it, the whine will disappear. It doesn't sound like a fan, but is just a very high pitch sound that is clearly audible. By next weekend, if it's still there, I'll call up Mitsubishi so that they could send someone here to implement the fix that some of you are saying exists.
The picture looks decent w/ SD satellite TV. I was using a co-ax cable to the TV, but today, I ran an S-video cable from the Dish receiver to my A/V receiver (Onkyo TX-SR605). I then ran an HDMI cable to the TV. The picture quality looks better and Info now shows it as 480p instead of 480i.
However, whereas last night, I was able to pause live TV w/ the Mitsubishi remote control (while I was using the co-ax input), now that I'm using HDMI input, the pause feature no longer works. Does anyone know why?
I haven't tweaked the color settings much, but will review pp. 1-2 of this thread to get the recommended settings.
Too bad I'll be out of town this weekend, so I won't get to use the TV much. But I plan to watch the Giants/Cowboys game when I return on Sun. evening.
captainjy 09-08-07, 06:57 PM Our 57734 was delivered today, replacing the 52628. I was a little suprised that this TV doesn't take 1080p over component for our Xbox 360. PQ looks really good on HD channels, SD not so good. 360 PQ is a lot better with this TV. Thankfully, no loud humming sound. The PQ seems a little softer than our 52628, but I think some tweaking will sharpen it up. Happy so far, but a little disappointed there's no 1080p over component.
Hey anyone else using the 734 series with the Xbox 360 HDMI?
It seems like I have issues getting the HDMI handshake to complete sometimes I've had to unplug the HDMI and plug it back in several times.

I wish I could help. I am thinking about getting the Elite when MS starts shipping the newer, cooler CPUS in them. I hope it works out for you because I would really only want it for HDMI and a larger HD. Even still, our 360 looks great on our 734!

We have had our 65734 for about a month. My wife hears a sound, and I can't hear it. I am thinking she is hearing the high pitch you refer to. I have not seen any posts refering to that problem, and, again, I can't hear it. Is it a known issue, or a breakin problem that will go away? As for me, I love it.

Yes it is a know issue, sometimes it go's away , if not it can be fix!
seanpatrickb 09-09-07, 02:12 AM If its there, you'd both be able to hear it, its very whiny. And to the captainjy, the new 360 premiums have an hdmi port, and i'm pretty sure are just sata, so it may be even cheaper to buy your own hd. When i first plugged in my ps3 it wouldn't show up, but then i realized i had a 720p game in and when i took it out it all showed up and i set it up fine.

See your Owner guide, page 18. The Mits HDMI only passes PCM stereo to the digital audio out.
Fry's has the 73-734 for $2499 with 16 month same as cash/no minimum payment/no interest financing and a free Big Bertha Driver [which is worth $300-$500 depending on where you get it] . . . (the 16 month financing and BigBertha Driver require application for a Mits credit account).
Is this a good deal?
Thanks,
