powerplyer 01-13-08, 01:00 PM Hello,
First of all I want to thank you for all you feedback in my purchase of my 65734. I got it from TD when it was on sale and the I just got a chance to open it yesturday. I put Shooter on the HD-A3 HD and the picture was amamzing. I adjusted the gray level and the other recomandation and the picture is truly amazing. I switched from a Sony 60" DLP XBR950.
Now the question. I have a AVR HK DPR2005 and I am running out of digital input signals. I have a HD-Sat recv, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, a Philips (DIVX main purpose) and a Dlink Media 510. The question is that I would hook up my TV to the HK via coax. My quesiton is signals that come from my Blu-Ray and HD-DVD via HDMI. Will the sound go from HDMI --> TV Digital Audio Out --> HK AVR? This way I do not have to run seperate cable from my Blu-Ray and HD-DVD to the Rev directly.
Sorry and thanks in advance for the insight.

That is the recommended setup and should work fine for you.
BillyBeatnik 01-13-08, 01:22 PM That is the recommended setup and should work fine for you.
I may be mistaken, but haven't people reported that the digital out on the TV only passes 5.1 from the tuner, and audio coming in via HDMI is only passed out as 2.0?
powerplyer 01-13-08, 01:26 PM Perfect thanks.
So this is what I will do with the audio.
Sony Blu-Ray --> HDMI 2 --> DAO --> HK 2005 Coax 1
HD-DVD --> HDMI 3 --> DAO --> HK2005 Coax 1
HD-Sat --> DVI+L/R (HDMI 1) --> DAO (Converted) --> HK2005 Coax 1
Philips --> Component 1 --> Direct to HK 2205 Fiber Optics 1 (No Coax)
Dlink --> HDMI 4 --> Use it infrequently. Maily to view images from my PC to TV wirelessly.
Thanks again.
BTW I have the June 2007 mfg date and all I hear is a slight fan noise which is much better then my Sony. Crossing my fingers hopeing not to get the high pitched sound.
powerplyer 01-13-08, 01:32 PM One other quick question should I even bother with hooking up the AVR Audio Output signals. As stated in the manual it will even convert analog to digital thru the Digital Audio Out. I am mainly interested in the Digital Audio Out. I guess someone would use it instead built in speaker. They seem OK to me and if I really want sound I just turn on my recv.
I may be mistaken, but haven't people reported that the digital out on the TV only passes 5.1 from the tuner, and audio coming in via HDMI is only passed out as 2.0?
That is correct. Audio via HDMI is converted to PCM stereo. This is shown of p. 58 of the owner's manual (Appendix A: Specifications).
powerplyer 01-13-08, 02:46 PM WOW that is bad. Looks like I will have to do it the old fastion way of plugging in-out what I need use.
Thanks for the feed back.
madpuma13 01-13-08, 08:15 PM First, i want to say thx to all those who patrol these forums and help the newbs (me) with questions.
Alright, I used the search button quite a bit and could not find what i was looking for. So i am now posting....
New 65734 just got delivered and will not turn on. Manual says to wait for that damn timer blinking light to shut off after 1-2 min and it doesnt shut off! (even after 10's of mins of waiting)
After pressing the power button you can hear (and see if you get behind the RPTV) the light start up and the fan blowing. The screen stays dark and the timer light continues to blink!! There is no further response from the power button and must be unplugged or reset to turn off the light and fan....
Of course tier one at Mits is no help and the company i bought it from will replace it but it may take up to 3-4 weeks to get the new one out to me cause they have to wait for mine to arrive......
Mits warranty advised they can be out here in 2 days but i'm debating scrapping the thing now....
Any ideas????

This happened to me once and I accidentally turned the "timer" on in the menu settings.
Turn the TV on and make sure you didn't accidentally do the same thing...
madpuma13 01-13-08, 10:44 PM I am not able to see anything when the tv is turned on...
Am i able to reset the timer using some kind of key combination???
How am i to do this without visual aide
johnner1999 01-13-08, 11:26 PM ...question: I got the TV from tigerdirect.com, well how come my set doesn't have those two stickers on the front of the screen the 1080p sticker on the bottom left and the hdmi/simplay/etc. longer sticker that is on the bottom right hand corner of the new sets?
Is it possible that this set was not new out of the box and had been opened already? It seemed like it had been factory sealed but shouldn't those stickers come on the TV? Did anyone else buy one and not get these stickers?
When my new 73734 came the box sure did looked sealed (I opened it not the delivery people) and mine only has the small 1080P sticker in the lower left on it? What does this mean? I got a great deal on at least I think I did, it was a dollar shy of twenty-five? I checked the hours its about 90 -- and I have had the set for about three weeks... watched a lot over the holiday - so it seems right.
cliffordbrown 01-13-08, 11:31 PM If this TV does NOT support HDMI switching via the AVR, I guess that means you can't run a single source through your AVR via HDMI to the WD-73734. Since only HDMI can carry TrueHD, DD+, DTS-HD, or uncompressed PCM, how do you get a high rez audio signal from a Blue-ray player when using this TV? Let's say your only source was a Blue-ray player that outputs Dolby TrueHD in bitstream, and you want to take advantage of the high rez audio. Don't you have to run an HDMI cable from the player to your AVR (carrying audio and video) and an HDMI cable from the AVR to the TV to carry the video? Would this work since you wouldn't be doing any switching in the AVR, just running it through?
I have a 25 lbs Paradigm CC-300 center channel speaker that I need to put on top of my 65734. unfortunately, there is really no where else I can put the speaker. The way it is positioned, it is half on a shelf behind it and half on the top of the TV. Part of the reason I chose this model is because Mitsu's body and frame seem stiffer and stronger than the Samsung slim models, which would sag under this weight. I can detect to visible sagging or distortion from placing the center where it is now, but wanted to see if anybody else has done this and if there has been any ill-effects from it over time.
anybody out there using a center channel on top of their 65" mitsubishi?

My AVR doesn't have hdmi inputs, so I ran hdmi from the ps3 to TV and optical out to the AVR. This gives me DTS 5.1 which is the best my AVR will output since it's about 7 years old. But the sound is pretty amazing. There will be signal losses if you do it any other way ie: audio thru TV or video thru AVR. How much, who knows??
KingOr28 01-14-08, 11:36 AM When my new 73734 came the box sure did looked sealed (I opened it not the delivery people) and mine only has the small 1080P sticker in the lower left on it? Where did you buy your TV from? Mine actually did have the 1080p sticker on the bottom left as well, and was just missing the longer sticker on the bottom right maybe they stopped putting these on at the factory or something.
claude4 01-14-08, 11:36 AM madpuma13,
My WD-65734 had the same thing happen to me; it would keep on blinking but not show any illumination on the TV screen. I called Mits support who suggested I leave the TV unplugged for an hour. I left it off for several hours and was able to get the TV to work again. Once I could see the screen I e immediately hit the menu key followed by 1, 2, 3 keys to initiate a HARD REBOOT of the TV, which causes ALL settings to be reset to defaults.
Never had that happen again since. I thought the TV had broken somehow, but thankfully no.

When mine first arrived it turned on fine but for whatever reason it wasn't responsive through any of the menu selections, via the remote or panel. After fiddling with it for about 10 minutes I just pushed the reset button. That would be my suggestion and/or unplugging it for a minute or two.
After the reset the tv has functioned flawlessly.
KingOr28 01-14-08, 01:10 PM KingOr, if what you see is a very tiny black dot, you may well have a stuck pixel. Do take a look through the ports, just in case! If what you have does turn out to be a dead pixel, there are some folks who report some success with a special "movie" on disk that flips the whole screen from black to white, and shakes loose the stuck dot. Try at your own discretion, and sorry but don't have a link to where to find it.
The owner's manual states that they only guarantee 99.99% good pixels. That means up to .01% bad...out of two million, you could have 200 dead ones and they will just shrug and say tough. I personally would find 200 dead pixels reason for a serious shouting match.
Yea I saw this in the manual too and was very disappointed. I just have one dead pixel on the top left if I had more than that I would want to return it at the store but I ordered it online so its not that easy. I was reading today that Samsung covers any dead pixels under their warranty I wonder if that is true.
woodface 01-14-08, 03:29 PM I've had my 57734 for about 3 weeks now and just had a tech out to look at the geometry problems and a dark diagonal slash (looks rainbow-colored close up) being projected onto the screen. Turns out there is a scratch on the lens and they are replacing the light engine. He messed around with the geometry a little, but said the new light engine might fix that also.
Even with the problems, this TV is pretty sick. I paid $1250 at HHgregg for the TV, $300 for the stand, and $300 for 3-year warranty extension. One big plus for this TV is the ease of hooking up a PC to it. It's far easier than any TV I've tried running a PC on. It detects the PC immediately and has some nice adjustments available too. The problems are a pain, but I've yet to see any kind of HDTV that is guaranteed flawless out of the box.
zenoran 01-14-08, 03:45 PM wow... finally got a big screen this past weekend! I've been shopping around for a long time and was planning on getting the sony but HH Gregg caught me offguard...
$1499 for the WD-65734 ??? That's awesome.. I was sold... went to the store and talked to the dude asking him about warranty... I read only bad thing about tv is the bulb life.. I watch a lot of tv (no life) so I was naturally worried about that and wanted the best warranty so I could have unlimited bulb replacements... 5 years for $399... I gasped so he said he would knock more off the TV if I got the 5 year warranty...
He ended up letting me take the TV for $1350!!!
This TV is AMAZING! I LOVE IT! I was really hesitant plugging my HTPC into it but it displays 1920x1080 beautifully... I couldn't be happier... I'm just glad I didn't get one of those whining sets... :)
Can an owner of one of these 73" units help me out with placement of my center channel?
I plan on getting a Definitive Technologies Mythos 3 center channel. It is 5 1/2" high and 4 1/4" deep. Assuming that I have the 4" inches on my stand in front of the TV, will I be able to place the center channel there without the speaker blocking anything important (like the screen!)?
Same question for putting it on top. The speaker weighs 12 pounds.
anybody out there using a center channel on top of their 65" mitsubishi?
In one of the several Mitsubishi DLP threads here on AVS, someone had posted a link to a company that makes some sort of center speaker mount that you can attach to the TV. You might try searching. Sorry I don't have the link, but that was probably a few months ago that I saw it.
lcaillo 01-14-08, 06:43 PM I do not recommend it. The screen mounting on any of the modern RPTVs is barely adequate to keep the geometry correct and even a small amount of bow in the screen will result in geometry distortion.
woodface 01-14-08, 07:01 PM I've got a center channel resting on top of my 57" Mitsu with no problems, but it only weighs about 10-12 lbs i think
Buddy C 01-14-08, 07:47 PM I've got a center channel resting on top of my 57" Mitsu with no problems, but it only weighs about 10-12 lbs i think
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
woodface 01-14-08, 07:58 PM Actually, according to the stats on a similar Polk Audio center speaker it's only about 5 lbs. I guess all those packages I've been shipping were lighter than I thought :)

Do a Google on the "OmniMount Center-Channel Speaker Shelf". Amazon and other on-line retailers carry it. I have not used it, but it looks like it may be worth a try.
powerplyer 01-15-08, 02:01 AM Hello,
I am really enjoying my TV. I have had it for about two days and watched about 5-7 hours of TV. I put the TV in the final resting place and now I am hearing a noise. I am unsure if it is the Color Wheel, Bulb Fan or the infamous Wining issue. If I turn the volume up >10 then I can not hear the noise. It is a pain to move my whole entertainment unit to do the "electrical fix".
I would like to get the teams impression on what the noise before I implement the fix. My TV was mfg June 2007. Should I call a tech?
Thanks.
BTW the PQ is great, better then my Sony. I watched the football games this weekend and the PQ was better then my older Sony.
shart74 01-15-08, 10:41 AM If you are a AAA member you will recieve an 8% off coupon good towards a 73734 right now at CC. Today is the last day of their Big 3-Day Sale. You can get one for $2483 + tax.
Rudiepoo1 01-15-08, 11:33 AM Well, just got my call from Yellow today and my 65734 is being delivered tomorrow morning.......hell yeahhhh! Only problem is one of my friends is building me a custom wall unit that probably won't be ready for at least a couple of weeks or so. I'm going to have a hard time leaving this bad boy in the box until then:(
Can someone with access to a 73" tell me what the distance is from the base of the TV to the bottom of the screen? We've nixed the idea of putting the center speaker on top, so I'm trying to tell if I can put a Paradigm mini center speaker (4.7Hx17Wx4D) right in front. I want to make sure that the speaker isn't so high as to interfere with the screen. Additionally, where is the IR receiver on the TV? Will I block my remote commands with a speaker right in front?

7" from the bottom to the screen. The problem w/ putting the center there is there's a pull down/out control board for the volume, extra hdmi plug-in, etc.
I would not suggest putting anything on top of the tv. Have to remember the whole set only weighs 95 lbs.
Maybe build a small shelf on the wall above your TV?
Here's what I did.

Notice the center cabinet. The door is made of speaker mesh I have both my powered sub & center speaker in there with no distortion.
9ChargerFan 01-15-08, 07:33 PM i have my hdmi from cable and hd dvd going through my onkyo 805, it works great
So, you use your 805 for audio signals and as the video switcher to pass on the video signal to the TV, correct?
jrgreene1968 01-15-08, 07:50 PM yep, video and audio switcher. When i first hooked it up, my settings changed on the tv,when i played the first movie on bluray, but after i reset the contrast, brightness etc, it has kept the settings . I have had it this way almost 2 weeks. I have hd cable, panasonic bd30 bluray, and a a2 hd-dvd going to receiver all via hdmi, and 1 hdmi from receiver to tv. So far so good
9ChargerFan 01-15-08, 08:00 PM Sweet! Thanks for the info

How is this possible when Mitsu TV doesn't support A/V HDMI switching?
I know for my TV (perhaps I have the XX733), I have tried an infinitesimal number of times to try and connect my PS3 to my Onkyo 605 via HDMI, then use the HDMI output from the receiver to the input on the Mitsu. Perhaps only the XX733 models don't support A/V HDMI switching but the XX734 models do.
This is the only way to view movies in both 1080p AND listen to uncompressed PCM.
Every time I have done so, the TV outputs a message saying it does not support A/V HDMI switching, and to press "EXIT" on my remote to go back to the previous input I was viewing...thus I get no picture (because I can't even switch to HDMI-1, 2, or 3) but the uncompressed audio will work.
The only way I have found to make it work is to "trick" the TV by directly plugging the HDMI output from the PS3 to the TV, which will then allow me to switch to HDMI-1, then proceed to plug the HDMI cable to the receiver, and from the receiver to the TV. It will still output the "does not support A/V HDMI switching" message, but when I press exit, it stays on the HDMI-1 input.
There has got to be a better way...

I'm having the same issue with my set, which I've had for almost a month now. About 2 weeks in it seemed to be much quieter but that only lasted for about a week. I called the tech who confirmed a fix for this problem and he'll be out Friday. He expects it to be about a 30 minute job.

well i heard they didnt support hdmi switching After i bought my 734, and i was ready to carry it back..but i hooked it up and it worked, never got the message you got. But after i hooked it all up and set all my contrast, brighteness etc, i turned on the bluray to watch a movie, and all my settings on the tv were back to default...i thought crap!!, but i reset them again and it has worked fine ever since
chuck657 01-16-08, 11:55 AM Yea I saw this in the manual too and was very disappointed. I was reading today that Samsung covers any dead pixels under their warranty I wonder if that is true.
Anyways I am going to take off that little circle on the left side tonight and take a look inside my TV. Maybe I can see something on the back of the screen where the dot is or on the mirrors but I'm afraid that I might make it worse and get more dust on the mirrors should I be worried about this aren't you suppost to be in a clean room when dealing with these dlp mirrors?
I would try to be in a very clean, dry, and non-dusty situation before removing the ports. The only mirror you can get to is the big one on the back of the set, which bounces the picture from the light engine onto the sscreen. The DLP mirrors are nearly microscopic - all 2 million of them fit on a chip only 0.8 inches across. Those mirrors are buried in the light engine, and are (I hope) sealed.
I doubt that anyone will guarantee zero defective pixels - I don't think TI warrants them either.
powerplyer 01-16-08, 12:11 PM Closet Geek,
Who did you call to get someone out and fix the noise. It is not annoying but something that is in the back of my mind everytime I turn on the TV. I usually forget about it after watching the amazing picture.
Couple of quick questions:
1) Is there a quick fix for the fan noise.
2) I know there is a fix for the wine issue, but if I do not have that issue and apply the fix will it have any adverse effect.
3) Is there a way to set "color setting" globally vs each seperate input.

I purchased the tv from American and that's who's coming out to do the fix. I agree in that it's really not a problem since most of my viewing is done at volume levels at 10 or better. But when it's not right its not right and that does bug me.
Based on your build date I'm really suspecting that the noise you are hearing is in fact the whine issue that's been well documented. However, if you implement the fix for it and that in fact isn't your noise problem it won't hurt anything. As far as the "global" color setting is concerned I don't think that is possible.
I'm curious, why would you want to do that?
powerplyer 01-16-08, 04:58 PM Closet Geek,
Thanks for the advice. I will call Tiger Direct to see if they cover it, or I may have to call Mits CS. The reason I went to go across the baord with the same setting is because your setting seem to help alot. I also adjusted the grayscale settings. BTW I was going to ask you if you changed any other setting in the Gray scale settings besides the three.
Thanks again.

BTW I was going to ask you if you changed any other setting in the Gray scale settings besides the three.
Thanks again.

I'm not very familiar with TigerDirect and any servicing but finding someone to implement the fix won't be difficult at all.
As far as other changes are concerned I haven't made other changes simply because I didn't feel that I needed to. Again, let me mention that these settings are my satellite settings via HDMI connection. My DVD (via component) settings are a little different as I made those adjustments using the THX Optimizer.
Hipnotiq 01-16-08, 06:16 PM How is this possible when Mitsu TV doesn't support A/V HDMI switching?
I think when they say they do not support it, means they will not gauruntee it to work.
But obviously in some cases (certain equipment) it will work.
If your devices have CEC try to disable them. It could make a difference.
danielwd 01-16-08, 11:46 PM I have a Mit. WD 73734 and it is about 6 months old. In wide-screen tv or movie formats the top black bar that is dropped from the top of the tv is picking up shadows through about 2 inches of it. I can actually see part of the pic. from the tv show or movie within this shadow.
Its almost like the top bar is not black enough all the way through but only half way.
It is annoying the crap out of me. The bottom black bar is fine - it competely black.
Could this have something to do with the geometry?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
mellowyellow 01-17-08, 10:24 PM I've been reading the threads for a while now and wanted to chime in.
Tomorrow I am getting my new 65734 delivered. For over a year now I have been watching my old 55' Mits with that convergence problem where you get that bowtie effect and thought it was time to upgrade. So I finally saved up enough money and did alot of research here and elsewhere on the new Mits out there and I think I made the right decision. So I will let you all know what I think when It gets here.
Can't wait!!
I've spent time going through every page of this thread and hoping someone can help update me with the latest production flaws:
Going to pick up a 73734 within 2 weeks so I can have it delivered directly to my new house. I am curious if anyone has had recent difficulties, where you purchased, if you purchased online (TigerDirect has the best current price) how is the service should I need the fan fixed, etc.
Any overall suggestions are much appreciated.

Good luck with your eventual purchase. I just received my 65734 which was delivered from Tiger Direct (have one local to me) on Wednesday. Delivery was great, mine was actually at the back of the truck so it was one of the first deliveries and the box was in excellent shape. I've inspected it but haven't taken it fully out of the box as of yet due to needing to find a temporary stand. There is a date on the top of the box of 10/25/07 so I'm not sure if that is the date of the production run or not. Hope to have this hooked up to check out the games in HD on Sunday!!!
captainjy 01-18-08, 03:29 AM Thanks for the feedback.....looks like my viewing distance is right around 13' or so as well so it looks like this should work out pretty good then. Lastly, I just ordered my first big screen, flat screen & most importantly hi-def screen and damn I can wait for this whole experience. I'll be ordering my HD box from Comcast this week and should be getting the 65734 delivered by the 24th of the month!!!! Now I've got to start my Blu-ray player research:)
Look into the PS3, That's what I'm using. The Blu-ray is pristine and it also does a very nice job of up-converting standard DVDs. Since Sony owns the licensing for Blu-Ray it's gonna be compatible with all blu-rays with the firmware upgrades, which are so easy to download and install with an internet connection. Oh yeah and it's a kick-a$$ game platform but it's so much more than a video game platform. Do a little research.
PS: You're gonna love your 65734. The picture is superb IMO.
Ditch the black toaster and get a mean, green, fighting machine that actually has game titles then wait until the format war is over. Even though it's looking grim for red, they ain't dead!

Oh, the green machine that has the 4 lights that seem to light up for everybody I know. The one that has to get sent out for repairs every 6 months. Oh yeah I got one of those too. But I watch Blu-rays on the PS3.;)
Closet Geek 01-18-08, 12:44 PM Just an update to the fix for the fan noise:
Tech came out earlier than expected, and was done and out in 40 minutes. And keep in mind that this included about 10 - 15 minutes worth of conversation. Oh yeah, maybe I should mention...no more whine.

Was this the high-pitch noise or just loud fan noise? If it was loud fan noise what did he do to fix it?

It was just for the whine. (High pitched noise). While I can hear the fan, it's not what I would call loud or distracting. If your fan is loud then I believe there have been some that have gotten it replaced but with some effort.
Dalonso66 01-18-08, 11:50 PM Anybody know how to get rid of the popping sound that comes from the TV speakers when it senses dvd/blu ray track changes? Is anybody else getting this sound? I also hear it when I first insert a disc. Muting the speakers works but I have to do it every time I power up the TV
I only use my 57734 for Video via HDMI all audio is handled by my Pioneer Receiver via optical.

I only use my 57734 for Video via HDMI all audio is handled by my Pioneer Receiver via optical.I'm not sure if the pop is a the TV switching between audio tracks or my blu-ray player.I think I remember the sound coming thru the AV reciever also. In either case'it's not that loud IMO, it kinda of reminds me of the pops I'd get from the needle on a vinyl LP turntable. I think I also get it when my HD sattelite box switches between SD and HD channels or even a different HD format such as 1080i->720p. I'm gonna have to pay closer attention to the pop to see where it's coming from.
Z06_Pilot 01-19-08, 09:36 AM I have the volume on my 73734 turned all the way down, and i never hear the popping, plus I don't have to re-mute when turning the TV on each time.
works in my particular case.

bashbrook 01-19-08, 11:58 AM I recently purchased the 73" Diamond and I am really struggling to find a stand. I have several pieces of equipment, Marantz receiver, 2nd recever for porch speakers, sat box, PS3, Xbox360/HD-DVD, AppleTV, center speaker and a power conditioner(soon). I will add an equipment rack if the stand cannot hold everything.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

powerplyer 01-19-08, 12:24 PM Thanks to everyone in the thread. I did the whine fix myself. But the fan noise is still loud. Can someone take the time helping me and others identify the three major flaws (that I can think) and how they went about fixing them.
1) The ferrite bead by the ballast --> Fixed via electrical tape.
2) Geometry alignment --> Fixed via advanced menu
3) Fan Noise --> Need to get a tech?? If so can I just call Mits direct and what should I tell them.

Go to a furniture store, and look for a tv stand, we got our 65 inch about a month ago, and didn't like the stands in c.c. the salesman told us to go to a funiture store, we did, and we got a nice stand that is a quality piece, check it out.

yes, I do see this, and it's hit and miss. In my case, it is directly related to cable TV. even on high def programming, I can experience it. I think it's related to the particular material and not necessarily the station. For instance, Heroes looks perfect every time it is on. However, Law and Order has motion blur(not bad, but it's there), and they are on the same network. All of my viewing on this set is via HDMI from my Integra 9.8 pre/pro, which I have set for PASSTHROUGH, so any 1080p scaling is being done only by the 73734. Some high def programs on my local PBS station are almost unwatchable to me due to the motion blur.
i just learned to live with it. I think it may have to do with how certain programs are shot and how the signal is massaged before it gets to me(i.e., compression)
here's the test: I have played many many HD DVD's and SD DVD's on my XA2 Toshiba, and never once seen anything like motion blur. I bought this set for HD optical material, not for HD programming because cable is just a crapshoot as I mention above.
I assume that with the 73" real estate you will see signal transmission imperfections more readily.......well, it makes sense to me anyway;)

If I remember correctly when I had my old Denon 3802, you could only access the menu or onscreen setup through certain inputs on the receiver. I don't remember which ones exactly, I definitely know it wasn't via 1 of the component outputs. I'm thinking it may have been through 1 of the RCA outputs.
Maybe try that.
Thugzie 01-19-08, 11:16 PM I've never experienced motion blur on Directv or standard dvd on the 73734.

Rudiepoo1 01-20-08, 03:47 AM Well I just connected up everything tonight for the 65734 and I must say that HD is spectacular! Only thing is that every HD channel I've viewed is coming up as 1080i when hitting the info button on the TV's remote. I was under the assumption that these should be 1080p. I've got the HD cable box connected via HDMI to HDMI 1 on the back of the 734. Is there anything else I'm missing here?

It is showing the input signal and all hd programming via cable is either 720p or 1080i. Your tv changes all to 1080p

Wasn't this an issue with the PS3 that was finally resolved though a firmware upgrade? If you are using a PS3 to watch dvd's And blu ray's, update your PS3 firmware to the latest version.
FirePro 01-20-08, 01:35 PM On the 65734 does the digital out jack give you surround signal for all devices connected to the tv or just from the tv tuner itself?
Resurrecting a topic from early December. I just rewired all my components, having just added Tivo and my Christmas present (HD-DVD). Before searching the thread, I replaced all the individual audio connections to my receiver with the Digital Out from the 64734. I have now found I don't have real surround from any component coming through my audio receiver.
The Question: Have you all had to wire each component separately to your AVR in order to maintain true DTS signal?
Seems like they could have let the TV pass the DTS signal (at least from HDMI feeds) through the Digital Out.
dpippel 01-20-08, 04:28 PM I've searched and searched but can't find the answer to this question, so here goes. Maybe someone out there can help. I have a WD-57734 and love it, but I'm considering an RF system for my theater and simply cannot find the IR sensor on the Mitsubishi. I'm assuming that it's somewhere behind the screen, which would suck. Does anyone out there know for sure? Thanks in advance.
Bill Millar 01-20-08, 08:41 PM Firepro,
If you want true Dolby 5.1 from your other components your using, you will have to use a digital cable for each component, HDMI only puts out PCM sound, if your watching over the air local channel the digital cable from the Mitsubishi will put out 5.1 for that.
The IR Sensor is just behind the screen, you can take off one of your inspection doors then you can see it, you also have an output on the back of your TV for extended range sensor. I use my dish network 622 remote, it works 100 times better than the net commander.
Bill

Thanks for the info Bill. That does indeed suck. Now I have to figure out how to get an IR emitter from the RF remote hub to the sensor INSIDE the set. Way to go Mitsubishi. The output doesn't do me (or any professional installer) any good at all. What I need is an IR *input*.
zenoran 01-20-08, 10:34 PM For anyone that has noticed the blur of the 65734, is this a DLP thing or a model thing?
Maybe I'm crazy but the blur seems to be giving me a headache... would SXRD 120hz fix this or should I just stop staring so long? :)
Vinylvision 01-21-08, 11:33 AM This might be a defective TV. I would contact Mitsubishi for repair while the unit is still under warranty. And insist on repair. Take photographs of the screen to illustrate the problem. I had a Samsung 65" DLP rear projector which developed a black bar see-thru problem on the right side of the screen right after two years of use. And it had partial picture show-thru. Over a few weeks the width of the effected area kept getting wider and wider. The problem was diagnosed on an avsforum samsung thread as being VERY expensive to fix (over $1000) so I returned the unit to Costco and bought the 73734. As I recall the Samsung problem involved replacing either the "light engine" or mirror.
Please post the results of your service call on this forum. The reason why you are not getting a lot of responses to your post so far could be because no one has experienced it YET.

Rudiepoo1 01-21-08, 01:45 PM So it's only been a couple of days worth of viewing but my first impressions of the 65734are pretty awesome! Blacks are very deep and the colors are amazing. Right now I'm running on Brilliant picture mode with those factory settings with color temp at low, deep field imager on, video noise low, sharp edge on & lamp mode at standard. So obviously I haven't changed much and things look pretty damn good. Are there other recommendations or changes I should be making or looking at?
Also it seems that when the set is off I've noticed what look like two greyish spots on the screen. The one spot is like a greyish circle with maybe a four inch circumfrance. At first I thought it was just a shadow of light from the back wall windows but it's not the case. It doesn't seem to affect the picture at all in any way when the set is on but I'm wondering if this is something I should have looked at or be concerned with?

This really really sucks. What is the gd benefit of HDMI then? Might as well have DVI. Are all TVs like this? Is it the HDMI spec or is this a mits shortcoming? It can't be the spec, because if you use HDMI switching on a receiver (run HDMI from the source into the receiver), I bet it will be 5.1.
Rudiepoo1 01-21-08, 03:42 PM Its reflected light. no issue
That's what I'm saying, it's not reflected light. There are two fixed greyish like circles that appear on the screen when it's off. Best way to describe it is like a shadow of a circle but it's definitely fixed on the screen and can only be seen when it's off. Anyone else heard of anything like this??
chuck657 01-21-08, 05:28 PM Rudiepoo1, is your grey circle there in the complete absense of light in the room? I mean, pitch black no light from anywhere? I hope not! Then, when you've achieved total darkness, try putting a small light somewhere in the room and see if there is any spot. Move the light to a different location, and see how it affects the spot. My guess is that you are seeing light that is re-reflected from inside the set - probably a double-bounce of light entering the front, off the big mirror, then off something (lens, color wheel, whatever) down inside the set, back up to the big mirror then out.
I've got a couple of ghost-lights like that, and they behave exactly like internal retro-reflections.
OR....are you seeing this light after you turn off the TV, but before the lamp actually goes out? The lamp stays on for ~30 seconds to give you time to change your mind about turning off the set. For a minute or more after that, the lamp could be glowing a bit as it cools.
Time to do some experiments!

i had a spot on my 734 probably less than 1" in diameter, called the store i bought it from, they sent an authorized repair man out to look at it, he said it was a defective screen(outer screen), he ordered a new one, and a week later came out and replaced it. Took about an hour. The screen is only warrantied for 30 days, so if you have a problem better act fast

Yeah, I've got one of those circles. I thought it was a reflection from a light or window, but that's not the case. Kind of annoying but it doesn't seem to affect the picture at all.
I called Mits on this and they said that was normal...as long as it can only be seen when the set is off.

psinsyd 01-21-08, 08:14 PM Ok guys, seems like the more I read up on this subject, the more it gets confusing.
Basically, I am looking at buying the 73734, and was wondering if I could have my setup hooked up as follows:
Cable box, PS3, and Oppo all hooked to the Onkyo TX-SR805 via HDMI, and then HDMI out from the receiver to the 73734.
Has anyone been able to get this to work consistently, or is this considered the A/V switching that Mits doesn't support?
If worse comes to worse, maybe I could have the salesman hook up a similar system in the showroom before I purchase the set, to see if it will work or if the Mits would just spit out the on-screen message about not supporting A/V switching.
TIA!!

I have checked the online owner's guide of other brands and it appears to be common for the HDMI audio in to get converted to PCM stereo. I guess they all assume that people with sound systems will run the audio direct to the receiver.
zenoran 01-21-08, 11:30 PM well, not that anyone commented on my problem but I think I might have figured out what was apparently driving me crazy?
Is there a sweet spot for viewing dlp??? Specifically, the heigh of the stand I think is my problem... it seems when I'm laying down lower than the bottom of the set it has a horrible blur effect... I might need to get a new stand.. are there any posts/articles on optimal viewing angles/situations for dlp/rpv???
thanks :)
danielwd 01-21-08, 11:34 PM This scares the crap out of me. I've already went through one defective Samsung T.V., a HLR series, that developed a shadow issue on the left side. Thankfully, CC did me well by replacing the tv without hesitation giving me 100% of what I paid for the Samsung and replacing the shadowing Samsung with the Mit 73734 (of course I paid the difference between the Samsung and Mit.).
I bought an extended warranty for big bucks from CC because of my prior history with the Samsung TV.
These situations are making me all the more nervous with these HDTV sets. I absolutely love the picture quality but it seems to me like there are too many intricate things that can go wrong. What's weird about this back-bar-see-through issue, is that it is not so serious that it completely affects viewing quality (like with the Samsung that did), in fact as long as there are no black bars on the top and bottom, it doesn't affect picture quality at all. But anything other than the 1.85:1 format and the black bars are there, and the see-through thing drives me crazy.
I guess I will take your advice and call Mitsubishi to see what they are willing to do. Thank you for your advice and I will stay in contact with this forum to keep everybody up to date.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This might be a defective TV.

Its almost like the top bar is not black enough all the way through but only half way.
It is annoying the crap out of me. The bottom black bar is fine - it competely black.
Could this have something to do with the geometry?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Its still going on. Any answers out there?
danielwd 01-21-08, 11:41 PM I have the 73833 and notice the same exact thing. I dont think anything can be done.
Mike
Mike, notice my post above this in response to vinylvision.
I have played with the geometry as much as possible and as of now, I dont think there is anything that can be done.
However, one thing I have found is that you can move your picture up using the manual keystone alignment within the service menu (menu-2-4-5-7 then hit 0). The entry that controls the position of the picture is number 1 and is called HVPOS. You can move your screen all the way up until the top black bar is very small, and that way the see-through-black-bar thingy will not be noticeable. Granted you have to move the screen back down to view normally formatted material and move it back up every time you watch black-bar formatted material, but it only takes a few seconds and is well worth it for me. The problem drives me crazy when I try and watch it when this problem is occurring.
Oh, and one other thing. The bottom bar is very, very wide when you adjust your HVPOS so your screen is all the way up. But, like I said, it is worth it for me just to get the see-through black bar off the screen.
Let me know if you get any more information about this issue. I think I am going to call Mit. tomorrow or at my earliest convenience.

Vinyl, was the problem occurring when viewing nonHD channels? This is the only situation you would get the black bars on the left and right.
Or was this a the ever-so hated "shadow" problem I had with my Samsung I referred to?
My problem is related to the black bars from viewing anything more than the 1.85:1 ration. My top bar is slightly transparent and I can see the picture continue on through the top black bar.
Vinylvision 01-22-08, 09:21 AM On my Samsung, the right side black bar show-thru problem was on ALL pictures regardless of scope and resolutions, so your 73734 problem might not be the same. BUT, I still think you should contact MITSUBISHI directly, describe the problem for the record, and request a Mitsubishi service call to correct it. No pictures produced by your 73734 should have an artifact that greatly annoys you. I don't have this problem on my 73734. Go look at another 73734 at a dealer and see if you see the same problem in the showroom. If Mitsubishi service cannot correct your problem or gives you BS, send a letter to Mitsubishi requesting a replacement of your 73734 lemon while you are still in Mitsubishi's warranty period.

Rudiepoo1 01-22-08, 12:29 PM Yeah, I've got one of those circles. I thought it was a reflection from a light or window, but that's not the case. Kind of annoying but it doesn't seem to affect the picture at all.
I called Mits on this and they said that was normal...as long as it can only be seen when the set is off.
Yeah, it's definitely the screen in relation to reflected light. As someone else suggested I checked it early this morning with 3 stationary lights in different areas, turned one on and could see the circle towards the bottom middle of the screen, turned that light off and was able to notice another one much smaller to the left of it while not noticing the first circle. I guess the most important thing is it absolutely has no affect whatsoever on the picture currently. My concern is if this would somehow change in the future? I may just call the place I ordered it from to see if they'll send someone out to inspect it just to play it safe.
Other than that I have no complaints - fantastic picture! I can hear the lamp as others have stated but it's only when the volume is super low and even then it's not a high pitched sound, just the normal output of the lamp so no biggie here.
Something weird that has happend on a couple occasions though is sometimes when I'm switching from one HD channel to the next HD channel I have heard a low pitched popping noise......very wierd.
Rudiepoo1 01-22-08, 12:30 PM i had a spot on my 734 probably less than 1" in diameter, called the store i bought it from, they sent an authorized repair man out to look at it, he said it was a defective screen(outer screen), he ordered a new one, and a week later came out and replaced it. Took about an hour. The screen is only warrantied for 30 days, so if you have a problem better act fast
Was this when the set was off or on or both??? Luckily I have no issues when the set is on.
jrgreene1968 01-22-08, 12:35 PM Was this when the set was off or on or both??? Luckily I have no issues when the set is on.
off or on didnt matter, it actually looked like something pushing against the screen..but when he took the screen off, i see theres nothing in there to push on the screen, it was just defective.

Anyone?Connect the video via HDMI direct to the TV. Use the optical connections from your equipment for sound thru your AV reciever. This will give you the best possible sound and picture for your setup. Plus you'll get sound to the TV thru HDMI for those times when you just wanna watch tv without the AV reciever.
Closet Geek 01-23-08, 10:31 AM Trying to run onscreen setup for my Denon receiver. Connected the Denon's monitor out to input 2 on the Mits, but all I get is a blue screen. I must be missing something really simple here. Sigh...
In case it hasn't been answered or figured out yet...On my Denon (granted an older model) the monitor out is s-video. When connected to the Mit it has its own input for it. And it works fine. But I can't remember if the video mute on the global settings is on or off for it. That may be your problem.
abigfish 01-23-08, 11:17 AM I was looking at the board and trying to figure out how to do a keystone geometry adjustment. I got as far as going to the service menu and pulling up the adjustment screen. I noticed that there are three bands of color however on mine I only see two and one in some of the areas. Which I take to mean im out of adjustment. The picture on the tv is also out of wack giving me a pincushion look on sd as well as letter boxed hd. Is ther an easy way to adjust this or is it trial and error? Should I be looking at the threee lines around the perimeter inthe kestone adjust menu as a guide to my adjustment? Please help I'm a bit frustrated.

No easier way that I know of. Pretty much trial and error as you said but once you get started it's really not that difficult. Keep in mind that you won't really see any corrections until you save your settings and back out of the menu. Also, for the pincushioning you have to cycle around once before you can start making these adjustments. And you might want to have a letterbox program as well as an SD program qued up to help speed things along.
abigfish 01-23-08, 11:49 AM So the lines in the menu are not a guide? will they correct as I save though? also will I have to do my other HDMI inputs or will this take care of the issue on all inputs? Thanks for your previous reply.

Yes, they are a guide and they will correct as you save. And no, these changes are universal across inputs.
zeotherm 01-23-08, 02:43 PM Okay, I have had my new 65734 sitting in its shipping box for ~2weeks now while I finish up the cabinet for it to go in... The wait is killing me, but hopefully only a day or two more :) Urethane the cabinet tonight, and hopefully fix the drawers tomorrow to be completely done by Friday for a weekend of new TV goodness :D
My question after reading nearly all of this thread is, 'is there any danger in going into the service menu to tweek things?' Others have used it to change some of the gains on individual colors, and the geometry corrections, but I have seen warnings like 'do this at your own risk'... Will working in there void my warranty, cause the TV to format my computer hard drive, and order 57 pizzas to my house? Or is it just that it is an 'undocumented' feature?
Thanks for any insight people can offer! After reading the last few pages I am weary about using my new receiver as the primary switching source for video and audio... :( Hopefully it will work! (It is an Integra DTR-6.8, which is (IIRC) very close to some of the Onkyos people have been mentioning in here) I'm keeping my fingers crossed as they were bought as part of a serious upgrade of my system.

There are plenty of examples of folks doing the same adjustment you are now trying. You can see the effects of your keystone changes without exiting the menu..you just press Enter or something like that and the changes are immediate.
For setting the straightness of the sides of the SD picture, you get 11 different pre-programmed settings, and you just choose the best one. They are not numbered in any way, so you must go by eye alone.
Also, you can center the picture to get the outlines even before you start with the geometry.
Unfortunately, there is no adjustment for the slight bowtie appearance of the letterboxed signal - that is purely an optical artifact and Mits didn't provide any geometry correction for it.
Well, have fun!

When you make any connections to the tv it recognizes the new connection. When you connect a dvd player, the tv recognizes the connection, when you connect a dvr, the tv recognizes...etc. Same for my Denon. When I need to view the onscreen menu I change the input on the tv accordingly.
But based on you saying that "it worked long enough for you to turn on your rear speakers" it has me wondering if you have a bad cable or connector. Does anything change if you wiggle the cable a little?
anybody that bought at tigerdirect for $1599 within 30 days should check item number M402-6502 for a $100 price adjust today.

keithgordon 01-25-08, 03:51 PM This is another set from a different store. Same ol' stuff, of course. Maybe I need to fire my gun next to my ear for an hour or so so I won't be able to hear the whining/humming anymore, LOL.
Thanks for posting that, BTW.
How did you adjust the Keystone on the set? I know how to get to the menu - just don't know how to make changes. My lines look horrible (Crooked - wavy in spots). Is this right? Just got the set today.
Thanks in advance
ALTAJoe 01-26-08, 09:53 AM OK, I'm sure this is a stupid question, but does anyone know how I change the color of the side bars from gray to black?
ALTAJoe 01-26-08, 12:28 PM Never mind, the Satellite receiver controlled the color of the side bars.

rct0361 01-27-08, 02:20 PM Hello everyone,
I just bought the WD-65734 last weekend during the Holiday sale at HHGREGG's, it was on sale for $1600 and for an extra $100 I got the 5 year major component warranty (ie. bulb replacement and mirror problems) was this a good deal or not? Also, I called and talked to the sales rep today and told him I was looking at the forum for information on how to fine tune the picture to get the best out of the TV. He suggested that I get a Color Calibration Disk from Monster Cable, to really help adjust the TV. Have any of you used this item on your TV's and if so how did it work out for you. I am using a Directtv HD Sat box, the picture looks great on High Def but if this item would help with those non-HD channels I would like to give it a try.

Orion,
I have the 65" and am sitting about 10 feet away and it is nothing less than "FRIGGING AWESOME". BIGGER IS ALWAYS BETTER WHEN YOU CAN AFFORD TO GO THAT ROUTE. Don't let the MRS. Talk you out of 65" of HEAVEN TV DUDE. Heck if the 73" would have been under $2000 I would have most definately gotten it, had a budget to stick too.
danielwd 01-28-08, 12:10 AM Just wanted to update regarding the transparent bar issue. I have called my warranty company. They have contacted an AV repair shop a little less than an hour away I think. I am calling them tomorrow to make an appointment.
I will keep everyone updated in regards to this issue.
mikeceli 01-28-08, 12:13 PM In my house, we sat between 8' and 19' away from our Sharp 65" Rear Projection DLP. We have the same seating with our 73734. Just fine. The 9' is a little close, when not HD programming.
IMO, the published distance charts are about as valid, as the published "weight" charts, for adults.
mikeceli 01-28-08, 12:15 PM I ordered a second 73734, to replace the one I bought a few weeks ago. yous may recall, it would not stay on, possibly a bad bulb. I'm glad I bought it from Costco.com !

Ok, thought I'd bring this back up but now I've noticed something else on the screen and was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue. When the there's no picture on the screen and it's just black like when I switch inputs to my 360 but don't have the 360 on yet I've noticed a 3 or 4 spots that seem like the size of a thumb. When there's a picture on screen I really can't make out these same spots except for one and that's only when there's a dark black area in the picture with barely reveils this. Anyone have any thoughts what this could be? It's not finger prints of any sort, no one touches the screen!:) I've just noticed it seems like a fixed image but again it's only really visible when the set is on and doesn't have a picture. I'm thinking about calling Mitsubishi on this one and see what they've got to say. I've only had this set for like 2 weeks if that.
orion7144 01-28-08, 11:19 PM Well thanks I just ordered from 1call with free shipping. I was going to get it at the local Costco for $100 less but the one from costco does not have all the added features as the 734 and I would have had to pay tax. Opted for the the 5yr (with free bulb replacement) and since they offer me a good deal on a replacement for my Onkyo TX-NR801 (no HDMI but I will miss the net-tune), I also ordered the TX-SR705.
Nelson9937955 01-29-08, 03:29 AM What have you 65734 owners found that works really well for you as far as changing grayscale setting in service menu? I checked out the tweaks section but mostly people were discussing other models and I want to see if any of the 65734 owners are changing things up. Mine were all set to 1024 as default for low. My colors were all changed to cnet settings except i really bumped up contrast and brightness as i have a bright room
Nelson9937955 01-29-08, 11:57 AM And here is also I fact I learned when hooking up my 65734 to a motorola cablebox from Time Warner. For people who say SD is nasty looking with this TV. I had at first set the cablebox to 4:3 Stretch, which is the setting i had always used with my prev tv and that was the best option. Well doing that, right away i too felt that SD was just plan UGLY. Pixelated shows galore!
Well I figured out the cablebox was doing the upconversion job and zooming itself and doing a piss poor job of it! I changed the 4:3 setting to 480i so that my TV would handle the adjustments and that made a NIGHT AND DAY difference for SD channels. Now they look great for an HDTV. Even better than my old CRT looked. I was very impressed. This just made my TV viewing experience 100% better!
Try this out guys if you have problems with ugly SD. Of course we all know HD channels are already amazing and need no adjustments! lol

It's a funny thing that you post this now because I'm currently in the midst of re-evaluating some things with regards to my picture settings. I don't want to post my settings yet because there are a couple of things that I need to address but in general I find my current adjusted settings to be more universally satisfying than those that I posted before. By universally satisfying I mean the picture across different channels.
To your point, I've looked at many threads and have made some adjustments that others have posted. And frankly, I didn't care for them too much for one reason or another. Then I started thinking practically about things. I noticed that many of those who have had their sets calibrated via service menu adjustments were still adjusting their user menus afterwards. It seems to me that if everything is set to zero (or some form of factory preset) and calibrated to those points then there should be no need to make any other adjustments. So with that I went back into my service menu and pulled everything back up to where it was before (GBL, GRL, GGL = 1024) with the user menu reset to factory presets. Then I made my tweaks using Perfect Color and Perfect Tint, Brightness and Contrast. At this point I'm really getting more pop across the board.
Now based on where I have things now, I think that I will have to go into the service menu and pull down the red just a touch. Also, I think I might have to adjust the white level a bit because I'm thinking as good as contrast is I think it can be a little better. The catch here is that it seems that everyone's tvs are a little different even though we all have the 734. So no one can say "your service menu adjustments should be..." Also, there is personal preference as well as ambient conditions.
By the way...my adjustments now are based on the HDNet Test Pattern that I recently recorded on my HR21 connected via HDMI. My standard DVD player is based on the THX Optimizer via component; however, when I'm finished with the HDNet Test Pattern I'll transfer those to the DVD input and re-evaluate those adjustements. I'll post my results for your opinions in a day or two.

I think the only real difference between these 2 was the lack of an input, the WD-Y657 only has 3 hdmi's instead of 4? Something like that. I could be wrong though but I know this much, after hearing the minor difference between the 2 it definitely made me rethink the WD-Y657 especially if the price is right! BTW do you mind sharing pricing info and all that with these sets, I've been looking for a deal for months now.
ufbaseball15 01-29-08, 09:52 PM Im also looking at the wd-65734 and the WDY657. What is the main difference? I couldn't find the wdy657 on Mitsubishi's website. Which is the better or newer model?
How important is the receiver for surround sound? I have had some real nice Bose speakers set up with my old tv, but they were never hooked up properly to my old receiver. Im wondering if I need a receiver with hdmi outputs or special stuff like that. Is there a difference between 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 sound?
I really appreciate all the help with this thread. You guys have all been very helpful.
RScottyL 01-29-08, 10:07 PM I couldn't find the wdy657 on Mitsubishi's website.
It's there:
Mitsubishi WD-Y657 (http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/j/i/18326/TelevisionDetails/WDY657.html?cid=5491)
justler6 01-29-08, 11:37 PM As far as pricing, there haven't been any great deals since black friday. I remember seeing the 65734 for around $1500. I PM'd the person asking about price.
I pulled the trigger on the 65734. Thanks for the awesome pictures and info in this forum... Helped to dispell the HDMI switching not working myth.
I ended up buying a Denon 3808CI as well so i'll be retiring my old 2802. I wanted it for the HD sound and HDMI switching along w/ ethernet connectivity. That's a conversation for another forum however. Same w/ the sound question above.
There's a different between all the 5.1, 6.1, 7.1. Some people like Bose, a lot of audiophiles hate em. I suggest going to the sound section of the board.
Rudiepoo1 01-30-08, 02:54 PM Ok, thought I'd bring this back up but now I've noticed something else on the screen and was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue.
So right now I'm waiting for a call from the service center as to when a tech can come out to look at the screen regarding these images that are present when there's no signal and just a black screen when the set is powered on. So we'll see what happens. Now last night I noticed that there's a small black spec that's visible with the picture on and this is what I'm not really happy about. Anyone have any clues or have something like this on the screen? I'm within 30 day's of purchase so depending on what the tech finds out I may just return it for a new replacement.
Closet Geek 01-30-08, 04:06 PM An update for those interested...
I've finalized my picture adjustments and suprisingly I am much happier with the results. My colors are richer yet natural, details are deeper and there is a greater overall balance across programming and channels.
For starters, I basically reset everything back to the factory defaults including the service menu (GGL, GRL, GBL = 1024 & XWL, YWL = 700, on my set). Then, using the HDNet Test Pattern I brought the XWL & YWL down to what I thought made the white bar on the test pattern the "proper shade". I also lowered the GRL because of the Mits red push. From there I adjusted the picture using only the Perfect Color/Tint controls. I don't have any special meters or scopes so it was trial and error using my eyes.
To evaluate my adjustments I use three things;
Live programming - (local, national news feeds and outdoor sports programs)
I feel that these are going to have the most balanced, natural and controlled lighting as well as the least amount of filtering that would affect picture. I've seen some of our local anchors in person so I know what skin tones should look like. I also have some of the same ties and I know what they look like. And I know what certain football team colors look like.
Recorded live programming - (HGTV, Food channel, etc.)
While there might be some "processing' done to these programs I figure they're going to be pretty natural looking. Again, I know what backyard grass looks like. I know what a cedar plank looks like. I know what a red onion or lemon look like.
Movies - (HBO, Showtime, etc.)
These are tricky because movies are highly processed (especially CGI ones) and go through a transfer process that may or may not be good. I figure that if the other two items look good then the movies willl fall into place...for the most part.
I'm no expert and certainly don't know everything so if anyone has any thoughts or opinions about these settings I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, I hope you find it helpful.
opus312 01-30-08, 06:11 PM I changed the 4:3 setting to 480i so that my TV would handle the adjustments and that made a NIGHT AND DAY difference for SD channels. Now they look great for an HDTV. Try this out guys if you have problems with ugly SD.
Which input are you using?
doo4usc 01-30-08, 06:29 PM Just set new TV and starting to play...Does anyone know of a program or way to make edited JPEG's compatible with the Photo Port? I edit with Elements 5.0. Thx Doo
ufbaseball15 01-30-08, 07:29 PM Just purchased and ordered the WDY657. Should be delivered tomorrow. Quick question, when I bought it the salesman told me that for $150 they will come and calibrate my screen so that it will look good like the store model. Is this a BS scheme or can I manually do this myself? Really looking forward to the tv, any startup or setup hints I should do or not do
Thanks in advance
madpuma13 01-30-08, 09:48 PM This may be a stupid question, but you never know unless you ask....
After purchasing the 65734, the tv arrived broken (wouldnt turn on, see page like 40 or 42 for my post on it), instead of returning it to the place where i bought it (online) and waiting 3-4 weeks for another one to arrive, i called the warranty guys to fix it.
Well it's fixed now but they cant deliver it until the 12th. I want it for the Super Bowl! They advised i could pick it up....
So my question, how can i trasport this thing? I have an 05 4runner and no truck. The tv is just barely too tall at 39" to fit standing up. Can I lay it down on its screen? Or is the best solution, renting a Uhaul with a bunch of blankets and tiedowns??
Any help appreciated!

Nelson9937955 01-31-08, 01:45 AM Which input are you using?
HDMI
I have been following this thread since I got my new 65734.
I've had my Mit's WD-65734 for about a week now and I am very happy with everything about it. I noticed that if the tv is connected to a input that is not turned on the tv will turn itself off in about a minute?
My wife is still trying to master everything I have hooked up to it, and sometimes there is a delay in her making the correct choice of what she want's to watch.
If she waits too long before making an input choice the tv turns off and then she is really lost. This usually happens when I am not there.
Also I have made it do that on purpose just to see what she was talking about.
Does anyone know how to stop the tv from turning itself off.
Thanks in advance for any help some one may have.
opus312 01-31-08, 10:11 AM HDMI
I use the s-video input for SD content, the picture seems smoother than with HDMI. In fact, lots of folks think it's an HD picture...
opus312 01-31-08, 10:14 AM Is there any way to customize naming of inputs? For instance, I have two inputs from the DVR - HDMI and s-video. But there doesn't seem to be any logical way to name these - have to call the s-vid input something else, like VCR or whatever...
5Hawkeyes 01-31-08, 10:18 AM I've been following this thread for quite some time now. I have my heart set on the 65734 for our basement. The internet pictures are so plain, I'd like to see what it looks like in the real world.
Thanks.

Dont select an input that has no active signal connected.
You can delete those inputs (or turn them off) if you dont use them.
hipnotiq, Thanks for that info. I would still like to know if this is the design of the tv to turn itself off when no signal is present on an input that is assigned?
CronusTRD 01-31-08, 12:02 PM I've had my WD-65734 since July. If I have been using one input for a while (such as watching TV) and then change inputs to another function (PS3), the TV will shut off (no popping noises), and the red lamp indicator will be lit. I usually have to wait about 20 seconds or so before the TV will turn back on. I've looked at the manual, and it only states that if the TV won't turn back on after 2 mins, then there is an issue. Meanwhile, I think the TV shouldn't be turning off at all.
Does this sound like a premature lamp issue?
First a big thank you to everyone that posts on these boards as I have learned lots of info here.
I bought a 65734 and love it! My problem is is when I switch the input over to my HD player there are 2 pops. I have seen thsi mentioned a couple of times in this thread. Mine only does 2 pops and its when I switch to and from the input as well as changing dvds in the player. It does not bother me that much though. The HD player is hooked up via hdmi cable. The real problem I have encounted is once in a while, not always, I lose sound when I change the input back to cable to watch reg tv. This only happens when I have been watching the HD player and it does not happen every time. It has only happened twice now out of maybe like 30 or 40 times. I have my cable attached to the ant 1. I have no cable box. I am able to pickup all my local HD stations ota via my cable. That kind of freaked me out but am very happy with not having to use rabbit ears.
Now the even weirder part of this is the HD ots stations will have sound. It will just be the cable sd stations that do not. Yet they are all coming in over the same input of ant 1.
I also have a reg dvd recorder hooked up to input 1 via and s cable and 2 audio component cables. My wii is hooked up to input 2 and the hd player via hdmi. I have yet to hook up my sound system.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why once in a while I would lose the sound switching back over to watch cable tv?

Thanks for the tip, I will have to try that, although my SD pick right now looks pretty good right now. I will have to dig up some old s-video wires though. I haven't used on in about 5 years, lol

Yes, when no active signal is present the TV shutsdown after 1 min.
Their TVs have been that way for many years.

Agreed. I actually forgot about this fact last week to the tune of heart stoppage.
IrishLord82 01-31-08, 06:31 PM By the way...my adjustments now are based on the HDNet Test Pattern that I recently recorded on my HR21 connected via HDMI.
When does the test pattern appear? I'd like to record it on my HR20 and do a similar eye ball calibration. Thanks.

I am looking at mine in the box right now. I ordered it from a tv repair guy, and that is the model he gave me. However, I have found it cheaper online than what I paid. I paid right around $300. My tv is only 5 months old, with close to 900 hours on my current bulb, but I want to be ready if it fails. Just search that model number and you will find lots of different prices.

I used everything they had but i set my contrast and brightness to 40 as i dont watch tv in total darkness. I found this to be a huge improvement right off the bat to an already great picture out of the box

In my opinion, the stretch-plus mode using s-video produces a more natural picture than the HDMI stretch mode.

Stinger911 02-02-08, 09:04 AM I have the latest Comcast Motorola Cable / DVR box and a new (wd-73733) Mits 73 inch 1080P TV and I keep getting a bad picture. The question I have, I have a WD-73734 by the way, is what material are you viewing? What I mean is that if you are viewing TNT using your HDMI or component over cable, then comparing that to local HD material over your ANT connection or a blu-ray on your PS 3, then I'm afraid you are comparing several different categories of content broadcast with very different qualities.
I have hdmi to cable and I have many stations that are seriously grainy. One thing that helps is to increase viewing distance, then the grainy pic improves. One thing I have regretted is not buying the 65" because my wife likes the room with the sofas a certain way, and that means cable broadcasts in 720p, which require a farther viewing distance, looks really, really grainy - especially football. The grass looks like a sea of pixels to me.
Now if I sit at my dining room table, about 12 or 15 feet back, the picture looks AWESOME! I dont know why, but for some reason my eyes pick up on the slightest discrepancy such as with the 720p and 1080p differences.
Just some things to think about.

The WDY-657 is NOT the same as the 65734. It appears to be a step up from the 65733, but doesn't have all the features of the 734. It doesn't have DarkDetailer, PerfecTint, DeepField Imager, SharpEdge. Does that make a difference? I don't know. But I just want to say that it's not the same and one reason why I still haven't picked one up. I've had my sites set on the 65734, with all the Perfects and the 4 HDMIs. But unless someone can tell me they aren't worth it, I'll just keep waiting...
ufbaseball15 02-02-08, 05:52 PM Just received my WDY657 from Circuit City. I got it for $1499 before an 8% AAA coupon. I just used the Compusa online site to price match with the Wd65734 and the manager didn't realize and matched the price. Absolutely love the tv and has great sound. Is there any initial special setting up or changing the settings I should do?
Thanks

otismalibu 02-02-08, 11:16 PM Recorded some Twilight Zone episodes and noticed during playback that the grays drift back and forth between green and gray.

I can't help you with your cable box, but if you want to watch the Super Bowl in HD, I would hook up a cable line to the TV and do a channel scan. Your Mits will pick up all the QAM channels. It will have a really strange number, like 78.3 or 116.4 or whatever, but if you scan all the channels it finds you will find out which one is the Fox HD broadcast.
Just a thought if you haven't fixed it yet.

IrishLord92 and Nelson9937955...
Odd, I have completed my tweaks and posted my settings (or so I thought) but I looked back and the settings part wasn't there. Was it ever?
Anyway, I don't have my list of settings with me right now but I'll repost them later this afternoon or tomorrow morning.
CFioren317 02-04-08, 11:27 AM I just bought the WD-73734 model from Circuit City but didn't see anything on it that had a Y in the model #. However, from some quick reading, I see that Circuit City carries a model Y-something. Is that what mine is, since I purchased it from Circuit City, or do they also carry the WD-73734? I hope, because if not, I would assume it is false advertising.
Also, I have found that the picture is absolutely beautiful, but a couple questions for those of you out there who are the experts on this TV. First, the over-the-air HD is 1080i I guess? I hooked up my Comcast cable box through HDMI and it only shows up as 1080i. Are there any 1080p over the air I could try? Second, my xBox 360 HD-DVD is a good picture, except when the scenes are dark, it is very tough to see. Are there any settings, besides cranking up the brightness all the way to 63, that I could use to fix this? I used the Microsoft HDMI cable to run this through the TV.
Thanks in advance for the knowledge.
Chris

Over-the-air and cable HD broadcasts are either 1080i or 720p.
chuck657 02-04-08, 02:33 PM Circuit City carries the 73" 73734, and the 65" Y657. Hope that helps!
I am not paying attention to anyone who got their Y657 cheaper than mine. (covers ears, mumbles) Well, this thing is just so much fun, I don't care if I paid $200 more for an extra 31 days of HD bliss.

To evaluate my adjustments I use three things;

What were your service menu adjustments? I look forward to trying these out when I get home
Closet Geek 02-04-08, 03:45 PM GRL I adjusted down to 1000
XWL down to 600 and YWL down to 650
As I understand things everyone's set might be a little different with regards to the effects of service menu adjustments. Like I said, before adjustments I knew my set was a little heavy with the red so I just made the slight adjustment to GRL and am happy with things. You might find that you need a little more or less here to suit your taste.
Let me know how they work out for you.

I too have a little red push but missed the info on how to access the service menus. Could you tell me how to do this or refer me to where I can find out about it? Thanks.

Thanks for all your help and your settings. I was using the c-net settings and while it was a huge improvement over factory defaults, i still felt like something was lacking. I too had too much red.
Your service menu changes definately cleaned that up and your picture settings were just what I needed. The only thing I changed was the cyan and blue settings in the perfect tint controls.
With yours i felt the picture was a little too blue so i dialed them back to the c-net settings of 36 for cyan and 30 for blue and I am perfectly happy now with the overall picture settings.
Thanks alot!

Close Geek; Thanks for all the info including how to access the service menu. Made the service menu adjustments you recommended and found that they cleared up my "red push" issue. Will live with the current adjustments to Color and Tint and see how I feel about them after a week or so. Let me know if you make any other adjustments.
Closet Geek 02-07-08, 03:56 PM Glad I could help. It's a process and the way I see it we can all help each other out. I've been living with these settings for a little while now and am still very happy with the picture, so I don't anticipate making any changes at this point.

opus312 02-08-08, 01:28 AM I purchased the Mits 73734 at Costco about a month ago. It's now significantly cheaper at Amazon, so I'll probably return the Costco TV. If Costco hadn't changed their return policy to 90 days, I'd be inclined to keep it in spite of the price difference. Gotta wonder how many sales Costco is losing due to this change, and whether that more than offsets anything they've gained by restricting the return period...
brianwestchest 02-08-08, 07:14 AM My 65734 purchased in January 2008 and manufactured in August 2007 has a high pitched noise that I'm trying to decide if I can live with. I had a tech out who applied the electrical tape fix to the ballast. But, I didn't notice a difference in the noise, which is intermittent. I can only hear it during quiet parts of movies/shows. But, now that I know it's there, I listen for it. It's sometimes fairly loud, sometimes quieter and sometimes not there at all.
Has anyone had a fix applied for something OTHER than the ballast problem? I don't know what is a "normal" noise for this type of TV. I'm very sensitive to noises. No one else has even noticed it. But, when my wife leaves the TV on and turns of the cable box, I notice the noise immediately when I walk into the room. At one time the spinning of the DVR drive drove me nuts when the room got quiet but I finally adjusted to that.
I love this TV. But, if I could get it quiet, I'd love it even more.
Thanks,
Brian

If you bought an extended warranty from Costco, you might be better off. The extended warranties sold on Amazon do not cover any lamp replacements. I know Best Buy covers at least one, and in some cases the warranty is only $50 more than the price of one lamp. After see the Amazon warranties don't cover lamp replacement, I'd rather spend the extra money to get the TV somewhere that does.

Didn't know Costco sold extended warranties...
Vinylvision 02-08-08, 09:42 AM My bet is that Costco is losing some sales based on price. But Costco does add 1 year Costco warranty to the 1 year Mitsubishi warranty and if you use Amex card for Costco purchase, you get 1 more year warranty - 3 year total. I bought the 73734 from Costco back in August 2007 even though there were several lower price sellers at that time. The Costco 3 year warranty deal was what led me to buy from them.

I'm not sure this will work but it might.
Costco advertises 90 day return and 2 year warranty. Costco is very clear... the 2nd year is not from Mits, it is from Costco directly. The issue is whether Amex will allow this "costco year" to qualify as a "purchase" of an Extended Warranty.
from Amex site:
Extend Your Warranty - The Buyer's Assurance Plan will extend the terms of the original U.S. manufacturer's warranty for up to one additional year on eligible purchases with warranties of 5 years or less.
This leads me to believe that it will extend the Manuf warranty, NOT the Costco warranty.
BUT...
from the AMEX PDF on the site:
If you purchase an additional service contract or extended warranty with a product which is otherwise eligible
under the Buyer's Assurance Plan, and the combined coverage provided by both the original manufacturer’s
warranty and the purchased service contract does not exceed five years, then the product is eligible for coverage
under the Buyer's Assurance Plan. The Buyer's Assurance Plan will extend the warranty time period and mirror
coverage of the original manufacturers' warranty up to one additional year after both the original
manufacturer’s warranty and the purchased service contract have expired.

I've had the same T.V since Dec. 17th and have no such problems, it has a great Picture, no noise what so ever from fans or color wheel, the sound isn't all that great, but I'm hooked to a surround system so that isn't a problem, I would be taking it back if it was mine.
I've had my WD-65734 since July.
I've got a very similar issue, started just this afternoon while watching some college hoops. TV just turns off (no pop) lamp light is red, wait a little bit and I can turn it back on just fine. I brushed it off as a random thing but it happened again just a little bit ago. I've just shut it off and will let it sit for a while.
I've had my WD-65734 since the end of September and never had any issues with it until this. I was watching 1080i HDMI from my Cox Cable box.
Anybody have any suggestions?
Update: Just did it again, this time I did the Menu/Input and it gave me a code of 34, so from my searching that means "Lamp abnormality"....AWESOME!
geotlyrae 02-10-08, 02:48 PM Looking to get the WD-65734 next week (gave up waiting for the Laser tv). Just like to ask a couple of questions about the tv.
geotlyrae 02-10-08, 02:54 PM Oops... Anyway here are the questions..
1. Does the tv on SD programs have a decent picture? I have now dish, and unfortunately, locals in HD, are not here yet. (hopefully will be soon . Tampa, FL area)
2. Also, whats the best connection for the local channels.
3. Is the hiss or humm gone from the recent models?
4. Has anybody had much trouble after the initial warranty is over? Not sure whether to get the extended warranty?
Thanks for the replies..
Thugzie 02-11-08, 03:55 PM 1. Does the tv on SD programs have a decent picture? I have now dish, and unfortunately, locals in HD, are not here yet. (hopefully will be soon . Tampa, FL area)
The SD channels are VERY standard. SD DirecTV comes in 480i. For whatever reason my SD DVD player also plays in 480i but the picture is amazing.
DirecTV HD is ridiculously stunning.
2. Also, whats the best connection for the local channels.
What are you talking about HDMI vs. S-cable? W/ HD only some local programs come in HD right now. The format is all over the board also. Meaning 780i to 1080i, letter box to pill box to full picture. Usually the SD comes in full screen. I've read lately on this board that the s-cable provides better standard picture then the HDMI. I just haven't tested that out myself.
3. Is the hiss or humm gone from the recent models?
Yes, If you have a chance to pick out your TV from the floor (for example Fry's has TV's boxed on the main floor) check the date on the box. You want the most recent date possible. However if you do get the humming issue there's an easy fix that a few people here have been able to do themselves.
4. Has anybody had much trouble after the initial warranty is over? Not sure whether to get the extended warranty?
I don't think anyone has had the TV over a year yet. You can get an online warranty pretty reasonably here... http://www.newworldvideodirect.com/categorylist.asp?parentid=167&ManufactureID=637
Just remember that the bulb replacement will probably cost about $150.00/replacement. So if you need annual replacements you should get a warranty that covers bulb replacement. Some people think annual bulb replacements might be necessary. Btw I have the 5 year plan w/ annual replacements
elrizzo 02-11-08, 06:03 PM Hello all,
I have seen many posted questions about turning the shutter off. Most of those posts seem to go unanswered. I have seen some speculation that this is the "Dark Detailer" or "auto-iris" that we 65734 owners paid extra for. I tried turning it off and thought I noticed a sharper picture. But then I turned it back on and didn't notice a difference. Anyways, I would like to know (as do others) what exactly this is and the difference it is making.
Any help?
Thanks.

Thanks

it works exactly as you would expect it to work.
A shutter (or in this case a lever with a hole) closes based on input video signal luminance levels.
When the shutter(lever) closes on dark scenes it blocks the amount of incoming light from the lamp.
This helps to create higher contrast and deeper blacks during those scenes.

Thanks Hipnotiq for the explanation. I feel better about it now as I hope others will that have asked this question previously. Does this mean it IS the Dark Detailer feature not found on the 733 models?

Pardon the question but having purchased my WD-65734 for $1,399.00 do I need to buy both the 5-year bulb plan for $140 and the 5-year in home plan for $150 to get full coverage including bulb replacements from www.newworldvideodirect.com/?
And does the bulb replacement plan cover the ENTIRE cost of replacing the bulb and module that it comes in? (I believe that one replaces not only the bulb but the bulb module, no?).
Thanks for clearing this up.

Thanks.

zeotherm 02-13-08, 04:19 PM I spent a large amount of time researching before I bought my 734, but now that I have it all set up, the color and tint levels tuned according to good results I found on here and elsewhere on line, and I am seeing the DLP rainbows :(. I spent TONS of time in stores watching this (and other sets) and NEVER saw them on any set!
Is there some way to minimize this effect? I thought newer DLPs had pretty much eliminated this problem... I am going to try moving my seating back a bit and hopefully this will help. It just kind of shocks me as I heard others talk about them, but I had no clue as I could never see them. Now it isn't a constant problem, but it is somewhat annoying, and if there is a way to minimize it, I would like to do it. Thanks for any info.

elrizzo.... I'm going to buy the tv tomorrow at a local mitsu dealer. Will find out all the info on that warranty. All I know is that is GE and the price for 4yrs after the manufacture's warranty runs out, and I can buy it within the next 10 months. I'll find out about it tomorrow, and will post it. Meanwhile, I thought rainbow effect was over on these new tvs. I'm not sure what too look for, but will try to check it out before I'll buy it.

You might try either more light in the room, or making the tv darker. Rainbows, at least for front projectors, tend to be more visible with higher brightness.
Might just try watching it a while too. For some at least, the effect tends to diminish over time (no idea why).
chuck657 02-14-08, 03:11 PM I have "fast eyes" and can see the rainbow effect easily on most projectors and TVs from a couple years ago. The only time I really see rainbows on my Y657 is when my eyes move quickly across the picture. It's more noticeable when my eyes move up or down across a bright object on a dark background.
It doesn't bother me too much...

I agree with talon95 on these points. But also, as I understand things, RBE's are something the some people are capable of seeing and some people aren't regardless of the set.
geotlyrae 02-14-08, 09:16 PM Ok... Just pulled the plug and bought the wd-65734.. For a while, was contemplating in getting the Toshiba, since my old 55" still works perfect. well the way I look at it is you'll most likely need 1 bulb replacement in 5 years. Then at the end of the 5 year time you could get another replacement so you'd have additional time on a new bulb past the five years. That would at least guaranty you break even.

joefredpark 02-15-08, 07:12 PM thank you for the input. after reading the nightmare stories about the mitsubishi service department online i need all of the positive information on this tv that i can get to convince the other half that this is a good purchase. if anyone else would like to help i would greatly appreciate it.

Either I'm reading this post wrong or you really need to do research/reading. No offense but a forum like this is not the best place to learn basics, plus you posted in the wrong forum for your general 'how do I wire my system' question. You really need a beginner or intro to home theater forum.
Do web searches on Home Theater 101, how to connect your surround sound, HDMI, etc. Buy HDMI cables, preferably from Monoprice or other online wholesaler to save you money.
If all else fails, give $20 to your neighbor's high schooler and he'll connect it all up.
geotlyrae 02-16-08, 01:23 PM Thanks.. I only needed to know what connection would HDMI work best. But I'll take your advice and look further..
DEATH METAL 02-18-08, 07:44 PM Hey guys I just purchased the Y657 on 2-24-08 and couldn't of been more happier. I have a question, when you stand right in front of the screen. There is a weird imperfection in the lower middle of the screen only visible when standing over it. Is there something wrong? or do I just need to tweak my video settings?

Hawgfin 02-18-08, 09:59 PM Death Metal:
I had this problem with a 57833 and returned my set (I purchased it pretty soon after the diamond version was released). My understanding is that Mits is aware of the problem, but considers it to be acceptable imperfection. If you look at the Diamond Series thread for this television, you will see others that have had the same problem. My screen had a brownish stain that could be seen on the screen if you turn off the set and shined a flashlight across the area where the imperfection is. So, it seems to be some kind of discoloration of the panel. It looked exactly like your screen shot when I had it on blue screen (no feed).
I first noticed the problem when watching a dark scene in Saw 3 (it tends to glow somewhat). So, it can manifest itself during normal viewing at times. I really hated it, because otherwise, it was a great tv. But, you know how it is, once you find it, you start seeing it quite a bit during normal viewing.
The folks and Crutchfield figured that Mits would eventually get around to resolving the issue and told me to wait until March or April and try another one. I'm sorry to see that it is still an issue. I was hoping to try another one, since the price has come down somewhat.
DEATH METAL 02-18-08, 11:02 PM oh wow.. I can't believe Mitsu thinks it's "acceptable"... My roommate has the 65733 downstairs and he has the exact same issue. I Just bought the tv less then a week...i'll check out that thread you mentioned, I'm glad I'm the only one with this problem. Phew!!
Thugzie 02-18-08, 11:47 PM Now that I'm getting the 65734 next Thursday, I like to try setup the Tv and some of the components. At present, I have an older Onkyo receiver which is a 5.1 dolby with 2 bookshelf speakers, one center speaker and a boom box under it. I like to buy a blue ray dvd player, xbox 360 and 2 rear satellite speakers. What I'm trying to say is, I don't have any Hdmi wires yet, and Am not sure what is the best connection to all this equipment. Hopefully, the local delivery guy may set up most of all these connections. If not, can someone tell me which connections would be the best for all this equipment. Thanks..
Hey since the big news came out today that Blu-ray has won the format war you might want to consider PS3 since it has a built in Blu-ray player.
chuck657 02-19-08, 01:13 AM I may be losing my mind...but: For the last month plus, I would swear that there were NO indicator lights lit when my Y657 is on. Two days ago, I noticed the "Timer" light on while watching a movie. I checked, and I had no timers set. A quick look through the manual shows that the timer light should be on and steady when the set is powered.
anyone else notice no lights on during viewing?
DEATH METAL 02-19-08, 02:00 AM I've been reading through all the massive threads on the 734 and how the Y657 is a hybrid of a 733 and 734. Does the Perfect Tint really make a difference when comparing the y657 and 734?
Hi! First time poster. And I'm really depressed. I've read all 50 pages of this thread, but I still am not sure what's going on with my new 65734. I received it brand new from Tiger Direct (via Amazon) four days ago and it's got a humming sound. But it's not the high-pitched whine described by most posters.
It's not a whine but more like a hum or buzz, kind of the same frequency as the sound I hear through my walls from my large outdoor A/C unit. If you were to duplicate the humming sound with your own voice, you would use pretty much your normal tone, not Michael Jackson's.
Here's the odd thing. When I turn the TV on, everything is whisper quiet and it lasts that way for at least half an hour. But after 1-2 hours I can start to hear the hum from four feet away. By 2-3 hours, the hum is noticeable from ten feet away. By 3-4 hours, the hum is hearable while listening to the TV at normal listening levels and our viewing experience is highly compromised.
I've run this "test" three times now (meaning leaving the TV on for 4 hours), with the same result each time.
The sound builds up gradually rather than suddenly. It is not a heck of a lot more noticeable behind the set than in front of it. It's a humming sound that is not easy to pinpoint, though I assume it's the fan.
The date on the back of the TV is October 2007 (I took delivery in mid-Feb 2008). On this forum I learned how to check the bulb hours after I'd used the TV for 3.5 days, and the number was 00029... But I really don't think we had it on for 29 hours... 18-20 seemed about right. But who knows.
As for stickers, there's a 1080P sticker on the front left, and a small TI DLP sticker on the right. The TV looked new when I opened it, but I didn't pay attention to see what the taping was like. There didn't seem to be much of it. I think that I just pulled off the plastic covering easily. (I was with the shipping guy and I was more concerned about looking for damage.)
The TV is great other than the hum. In fact, in the first couple of hours the TV is on, the hum is tolerable and barely noticeable. It's only after 2.5 hours or so that it becomes annoying.
Is the fan a variable speed fan that intensifies as the TV get hotter? Or could it be some other heat-related issue?
Should I return it and get another? I hate to do that since the rest of the TV seems to work great. And it's a pain to return it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
mikeceli 02-19-08, 11:47 AM I just got my replacement 73734, for the one I bought in December, which would sometimes not turn on. It was 08-2007 production, the replacement is 01/2008 production. Neither set had any odd noises and this second set, so far, has no detectible problems.
ebackhus 02-19-08, 12:09 PM I can also see the "imperfection" on my WD-Y577. It's due to the actual optics of the screen. If you've ever taken an older RPTV apart you'd see that the screen is actually a giant lens. Without that you'd have a very distorted image. The TV wasn't mean to be viewed from a top-down angle and I can only assume that's why they consider it to be an allowable "imperfection."
I haven't had the hum that others describe. When I sit right next to the TV while powering it on I hear a very quiet whine for a second and then it's silent.
Rudiepoo1 02-19-08, 12:47 PM Well I just received my replacement 65" and the problems that were present on the first one are not on this one so I'm glad about that. This unit also seems to be a little quieter as well. Only thing is I need to make some keystone adjustments as when there's 4:3 material displayed the bottem edges of the picture bow out a little on both sides. I'm familiar with how to get into this menu to make the manual adjustments but I have no idea as to the proper method to make the adjustments and what I should be doing. Anyone have any details on this? I've seen a couple things mentioned on other threads but still didn't seem complete.
Thanks

solution is to not stand over the TV and look down at the screen.
GadgetBoy2007 02-19-08, 03:04 PM Hello all after much deliberation I have purchased the 73734 over the weekend to be delived Friday. Anyone used any of the calibration DVD's like Avia, DVE etc if yes did it make a noticeable difference? I have made copies of some setting members are using on their 833 but just wanted to know if it was worth picking up a calibration disc. Thanks for your reply

lol very true!! Anyways my tv has a very annoying hum after an hr of the set on...i'm going to see if I can return it tonight for a 73734
So Death Metal... Your TV also has a hum that grows the longer the TV has been turned on? After that first hour, does your hum continue to get a bit worse when it hits hours 3 and 4?
I'm trying to figure out why the hum wouldn't be constant from the moment I turn on my TV. Anyone know? Does it sound like the infamous "whine problem" to you? I suppose that what may be a hum to me might be a whine to others, but it really isn't very high pitched. The ringing I have in my ears is higher pitched than the hum, for example.
bigmyke23 02-19-08, 10:55 PM This may seem like an odd question guys, but I was wondering how the input selection on this TV is done. Is there a menu that is brought up, similar to Toshibas, or does it cycle through the various sources like an older Sony? I am strongly considering either this set or the 833 and was just curious. Thanks in advance.
DEATH METAL 02-19-08, 11:07 PM It had the hum...I just returned it and got my money back from blank blank. I found a killer 833 for a good price that I shall pursue. :)
opus312 02-20-08, 01:40 AM Couple of Tivo-related questions -
...Should the video format be set as native or hybrid or 1080i hybrid?
...Does Tivo's aspect correction conflict with the various Mits format options?
opus312 02-20-08, 09:43 AM solution is to not stand over the TV and look down at the screen.
Excellent point! Through much trial and error, I've also discovered it's not a good idea to lie down on the floor and look directly up at the screen. In addition, sitting behind the screen is not recommended, and possibly voids the warranty.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, when sources are connected to the Mit the tv recognizes those connections automatically. For example, I only have 3 components connected to the tv so my input selection menu only contains those 3 components.
Now to specifically answer your question, you press <input> and a menu pops up with all connected components. <Arrow> to the desired component and press <enter>. I'm not sure how this compares to the other tv's that you mentioned. You can even change the order of the inputs. For example, when I press input (from watching satellite) the highlighted component in the menu is dvd. And from watching dvd when I press input the highlighted component in the menu is satellite. With this set up I don't even have to use the arrow keys to select a component because those are my most used components. All I have to do is press the enter button. The third is an s-video connection to my receiver that I only use if I need to access the receivers menu for changes.
I hope this answers your question.
