Does anyone know how the brightness and Contrast of the W500 is compared to the HD1000u I know the "rated lumens" are 1100 vs 1500 but , Id like to know if anyone has seen these 2 pj and how they compare in Picture quality terms only.

Thanks

I would guess the HD1000 is going to be a lot brighter. I haven't seen any detailed enough reviews of the W500 to get a feeling for how it stacks up contrast wise. I would guess they are simmilar.

I'm also interested in a comparison of the HD1000U and the W500.

I've never had a projector before and plan to get one of the two models. With my 80" ceilling height in the basement, I will be limited to the screen size the HD1000U can show due to it's offset. With the lens shift on the W500, I could probably project a 92" or larger screen nicely.

So basically what I'm asking for is: Should I go for the DLP HD1000U and have to use an 80-84" screen, or go with the W500 and be able to comfortably project a 92"+ screen.

I hear people say DLP projects a "film-like image" and is sharper than LCD. Is this what most people perceive? What would you guys choose? I know the W500 has a terrific scaler which would be nice for SD content, but the Mits. would probably be brighter and possibly more film-like and sharp.

Film-like and sharper are usually opposites. Film-like means very smooth looking.

Yes filmlike is pretty much a different animal than just saying sharp.Yesterday I pick up one of the new James Bond remastered dvd's Gloden Eye,I have to say on my ax100 it was the best looking dvd I have ever seen.It was perfect film like.It was good as any of my HDDVD'S IMHO.BOB

I'd be interested in hearing about your experience if you switch to an LCD.

reuben,
Just to nudge you a little further into a decision, grab a w500 while you still have the HD1000 an do a little testing. Do it for the good of all your AVS Brotheren and let us know your findings. Newegg has a good return policy if you decide it to be inferior. If you fall in love with the scaler and the overall performance, keep it and sell the Mitsubishi. Worst case scenario you are out like 20 bucks, but your information could potentially help hundreds of forum members. Just a thought.

Oh and while you're at it, get the Epson 400, Optima 72, Sharp 500, Z5, AW15, AX100, HC3000, In72... J/K

ATABOY RUBES!!! YOU DA MAN!!!

So, are we talking side by side comparison here? That is often a lot harder to do than people imagine. You really need two identical sources and splitting signals is not an option.
Heck, you are probably so used to the HD1000 by now that I would settle for initial impressions and gut feelings. How does SD material look in comparison? The W500 will not be as bright overall, but how do they compare in "best image modes"? How about SDE? Image noise? Sharpness? Skintones? (50 other questions immediately fill my head)...Oh boy, you have opened a can of worms here...

I have never did this before so I will do my best ... I am no expert by far but i have been tinkering with projectors for the last couple of years and pretty aware of most of the ups and downs .... I also have avia and will be calibrating the W500 as best as I can ...
for the side by side.. my only option is my Pc I have a 7950gt video card and it has dual dvi output ... I think that should work pretty well I do use Ffdshow and even with the HD1000u I can get a very good picture from My pc almost as good as my Oppo dvd player ... or maybe better in certain things .. ( The oppo and mits have macroblocking issues. ) this is another reason I have been wanting to try a LCD ....
