View Full Version : Which 50' component to buy for projector
briankmonkey 06-25-07, 08:30 PM Ok, so the projector (Panasonic PTAE1000U) has been ordered. Which 50' component cable should I buy? I do not need to run the audio just the Blue/Green/Red cables for the picture.
I checked out monoprice and they have a $38 fifty foot run:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10235&cs_id=1023502&p_id=2856&seq=1&format=2&style=
Is this what people would go with?
EocThermos 06-25-07, 11:44 PM I got the 35 foot component cable and it has served my purposes- which is mostly running a composite signal through it ;)
I've heard nothing but good things regarding monoprice, and have been pleased with everything I've ever ordered from them.
briankmonkey 06-26-07, 12:01 AM thanks EocThermos. Sounds like I'll just stick with cable I linked unless I hear otherwise soon.
bqmeister 06-26-07, 08:30 AM I'm pretty sure that's the cable I have.
Very tough to run through 1 1/2" conduit, but the cable is very good.
briankmonkey 06-26-07, 10:35 AM thanks bqmeister
canuckleheaddave 06-26-07, 12:24 PM I would personally make your own out of RG6 coax and RCA plugs. I think you get a better quality cable, and lower price to boot.

with my lack of skill it would probably take me forever and I'd probably screw it up somehow. $38 isn't bad at all for not dealing with the hassle of creating cables..
travis33 06-26-07, 12:58 PM I just ordered a 50 footer. At first I got the cheaper one from monoprice (~$15?), and it was bad (purple+scan lines). I then ordered the $38 one and it looks great.

Damnit, I just ordered the ~$15 one, I hope I dont have problems.
briankmonkey 06-26-07, 01:18 PM thanks travis33, that helps me feel more confident.
patnshan 06-26-07, 01:42 PM I would recommend ordering the thickest one monoprice has. That's what I did with component and HDMI. I have a 35 ft. run of each along with a 50 ft. run of SVGA with ferrites. They are all monster thick!

killerdoberman 06-26-07, 04:19 PM I made my own cables. With RG6 cable and Canare connectors with a little piece of colored shrink tube on the ends. Instead custom length cables.
I used the same cable for my sub-woofer, too. And all of my connections for audio, and other connections to TVs in the house.
Nice custom length cables at rock bottom prices.
travis33 06-27-07, 07:55 AM UPDATE: Last night I ran the "premium" cable in the ceiling. Previously, I just tested it when it was still coiled up. When I turned on my IN72 from the cable box with these, there was the green/purple scan lines again. I was ready to put my fist through a wall. Then, I ran a 50ft Monoprice HDMI from the IN72 and to the cable box. The IN72 source was set to component and as soon as I made the HDMI connection, the component picture was perfect!?! Just to makesure it wasn't the HDMI overriding the component I changed the component source to my ps2 and it was still great.
So...I don't know what the heck was going on. I could be some weird handshake thing with the IN72, but at this point I don't want to touch a thing since everything is working. So, the cheap component from Monoprice may have been good all along and I'm not going to mess with the thing to find out.
I'm pretty sure that's the cable I have.

Bah, I ran that plus their 24awg (I think) HDMI cable through a 1 1/2" conduit! *flexes muscles*
(Of course, it was just a straight run of conduit... one coupler, no turns. And it was still a huge PITA.) :D

I think monoprice recommends against using their cheap HDMI cables for long runs unless they are used with a booster/equalizer.

I did the same with the 24awg HDMI.
I had at least 3 sharp bends/turns. I had to take the ends off the component cable and tape the ends to protect them.
You ain't kidding when you say *flexes muscles*. I had to pull HARD.
Wish I had opted for the 2 inch conduit, but it's done now and it ain't going nowhere!

You can buy three 50' lengths of Coax already made up and add the adapters from Radio Shack. The advantage is you can have it up today assuming you live near RS or some other electronics part store.
However you may not really save much money. The gold plated adapters don't come cheap and you need 6 of em plus the three cables.
I just built and ran my cables last night and so far it looks good.

Monoprice's premium component cable, 50ft, 18awg, CL2 rated RG-6 is less expensive than buying just the 150 feet of RG-6 from Radio Shack and that doesn't include the connectors and crimping tool.

You're a cheap bassssssssstard.. I know people say wires are wires but at 15 I'd say they're going to be pretty crappy.
Those purple scan lines aren't probably the cables fault. I have a 50ft monpirce component cable with lines and it was ground loop with my VCR/cable
briankmonkey 07-12-07, 03:00 AM Just wanted say the $38 (almost $50 after tax/shipping) from monoprice work flawlessy. Got the projector setup today. Gorgeous!
Thanks everybody :)
mikeloxlong 07-16-07, 05:43 PM sorry to jack this thread but I ordered my cables from Monoprice and this stuff happens

the color on the screen becomes purple and yellow and I lose red (or is it blue?). I have my 360 connected through vga to my projector (HD70) while I have my PS3 and comcast cable box connected to my Onkyo through component and I have the receiver hooked up to my projector through component.
Anywho, I was wondering if ferrite beads will help with this issue (it happens everytime I turn on the projector and watch for about 10-15 minutes sometimes longer)

Like Ignis said, is this because of ground loop with vcr/cable. I'm not even sure what this means but I'm going to guess it's got something to do with electronics. My projector is connected on a different outlet but that might not mean that it's on a different circuit altogether or is the groundloop issue affecting the source electronics (PS3, XBOX 360, cable box)
I really want to avoid sending it to the manufacturer because that would mean that I am out of a PJ for a while and they might change me for the bulb even though there's only 207 hours on the bulb since January 07.
The PJ has settings set to RGB but it still does it['s magic trick after 15-20 minutes of watch time. The only time I get rid of it is to turn off the unit and turn it back on.
since I saw that the guys posting here seem to know more about cables that I do, I figure I'd ask here as well.
zmurphy 07-17-07, 09:32 AM since i already have a compression tool, i started to run rg6 and use rca type ends to make my comp cable for my PJ unitl i saw the prices on Monoprice. i ordered the $15 50' one and installed it this past weekend and it looks great. if you bought good component compression ends and 150' of good rg6, it would definitly more expensive.
if had seen this thread before, i probably would have ordered the more expensive comp cable, but i am pleased w/ what i have.

The fact that the image changes after 15 to 20 minutes shows that you most likely have a circuit problem and you need to get that fixed. I know it's a pain to not have your pj for awhile but stop the suffering and call it in today!

yeah I know, I called in the issue with Optoma and they finally gave me an RMA #. I hope that they won't try to pull a "It's a bulb issue"
the PJ is going out today...
