i've been trying to get these file types to play in quicktime/itunes/frontrow.

tried xiph codec for flac, but its not working for me, anyone try this codec?

and are there any codecs for mkv? which software will allow me to convert mkv to mov?

Perian 1.0b5 can play and convert mkv to mov.

Are you sure? It's not mentioned on the site and having just installed it, it can't open MKV...

Yes the Perian Beta 1.05 plays MKV's fine... But unless you have the beta - you have to wait until they release it. A while ago the beta got out - but I don't see a link now... have to wait until they release it I guess.

I have Perian 1.05b but .mkv files I have are awful awful jerky on my Core Duo Mac Mini with 2gb RAM, could be because I'm playing off a airdisk drive though.

Using Perian, QT opens .MKV but must go through an import process (building an index maybe). If you try to play the file during the import, the plaback is 'awful awful jerky'.

What I've been doing is opening/importing the MKVs, when I see the progress in QT's timeline reach the end (right side), I can play the movie and/or save the file as reference .mov.
This Ref .Mov can be imported into iTunes and played in FrontRow without any delay. You can also add chapter markers and turn subtitle tracks off (or on).

The original mkv is unchanged.

hope this helps.

hows the quality of that reference .mov?

the quality of the reference movie is exactly the same as the mkv. which is dependant on the encode quality itself.

I just posted in the Perian 1.0 released thread about the slowness of QT/FrontRow loading HD movies and now I find this post.
I'll be trying this with my movie backups tonight. If this works, I'm in heaven.

Does MKV allow for Dolby Digital 5.1 from Quicktime with Perian 1.0 installed? Does Quicktime actually send out 5.1 through optical output for decoding in the receiver?

Try the (very sketchy) method here.

I couldn't get it working, but I think its possible.

Thanks for the info. I don't have my mac yet. I am going to buy the new iMac that should be coming out soon. I already sold my PowerMac G4 last month. So, I am currently macless. :(

Does Quicktime 7.2 improve .mkv problems?

I wish I knew this months ago. I was about to go mad upgrading my mini to eliminate the jerkiness.

What about VLC? I assume VLC uses an internal codec. Any fix for that?

Is there no way to play the MKV without delay?

Either way I’m ecstatic that my mini can play HD (even if I have to wait a bit).

Thanks all!
