I am seriously thinking about picking this up today because my buddy keeps telling me how gorgeous it looks on his 1080p set. I found it at Circuit City for cheap with some discounts. What are your opinions if you own the SD DVD box set or individual DVD's.

I bought the complete collection on HD DVD despite that fact that I'm really not a big fan of the series. I also have not previously purchased any of the series.

However, I definitely do not regret the purchase. All 3 look and sound terrific compared to DVD and even my Comcast HDTV. While I have some issues with the plots and characters, esp. in the 2nd and 3rd movies, they are all well worth experiencing in HD DVD.

I don't regret it. Even if HD-DVD collapses next week, I have a working player and one of my favorite trilogies in glorious HD.

I had purchased all 3 movies on DVD seperately but never bought the SD box set.

Is there any news as to when we'll be able to individually buy the movies? I really don't want to pay $70 for one good movie and 2 crappy ones.

I wouldn't go as far as saying I regret buying it. Your buddy is 100% correct. I will say it does look VERY good, but the movies themselves are not really my type of movie. I jumped in when you got 2 free with it, so it was worth the high price, but I wouldn't have got it otherwise. Looking back now, I wouldn't have minded spending that much money on 3 or 4 other movies that are coming soon. If you like the movies themselves, by all means get it. It is as good as it gets for the quality. But if you don't care too much for the actual movies, you shouldn't buy it just for the WOW factor. There are other movies that you can get the WOW from too.:D

2nd one wasn't so bad, I liked it. Rotten tomatoes gave it 74% fresh, however the 3rd movie was awful. Fun thing to do watching Reloaded is picking out all the CG effects stuck in the fight scenes how Neo's suit turns all smooth soon as he jumps or whatever.

I think the set is a must have, and I too only really liked the first movie (the latter two are just fluff).

Of course, you may regret buying the Ultimate Collection (as opposed to the Complete Trilogy) if your player is one of the ones that won't play either or both of the latter two movies. Look up the "4086 4203" error a lot of us get and you'll see what I'm talking about.

In any case, even with that large technical wart, I love my Ultimate Collection and consider it well worth the cash.

I bought the Ultimate Matrix and Complete set and don't regret it at all (Complete was for $20 from CC). When I saw all three in the theaters I thought Reloaded and Revolution were crap. That's what I remember about the three movies. Now that I've seen all three again on HD-DVD, Reloaded and Revolution aren't as bad as I remember. Maybe I "get it" now or maybe The Matrix was such a mind-bending, visually awesome experience that it left me with such high expectations that no movie could meet them. Whatever the reason, I definitely don't regret buying all three.

Nope!

I bought the Ultimate set and it looks and sounds amazing.

I personally like all 3 movies although I would rank them in the same order they were released, the first being the best.

Biggest regret I have is buying the Ultimate collection..
Major issues involved in getting Reloaded to play even after the latest firmware updates on an XE1..
Doubt I would have had the same issue with the non-combo set..

I also think people have gone a bit overboard with these discs, as I personally don't think they are anywhere near the expectations of PQ set by the likes of King Kong, Apocalypto (BD), Pirates (BD)..
The TrueHD tracks are excellent though, and even if the PQ is slightly underwhelming in comparison to others, its easily the best the films have looked and a substantial improvement over the DVD set..
Love the first film (even with its now very cheesy dialogue), and thought the second one was good while still critically flawed overall.........third one can rot in hell though, awful film which completely ruined any potential philosophical direction taken with the second film.....all IMO of course..

I would definitely suggest not buying the Ultimate set though, just in case you come across playback issues with Reloaded as a fair few people have had....especially if your old DVD set has all the extras

No regrets and no problems.

I have read here that several people have disc reading errors with the Trilogy, but I have watched two of the three thus far in HD and am quite pleased. The details in the character's faces is quite deep; especially given Morpheus' complexion.

My experience with the HD-D2 player and a Yamaha LPX-510 (720p LCD projector) has been that I see artifacts when there is a large area of constant color or texture (e.g. sky). I have been attributing this to the scaler in my projector. I cannot use the HD-D2 scaler as it is simply awful. My Oppo OPDV971H produces a better picture than the HD-D2 scaling to 720p. The HD-D2 has all sorts of jaggies and motion artifacts when scaling to 720p. Ick! My next HD player will have a better scaler on board.

No regrets here, and I rank the movies like others here. However, if I thought I was going to have regrets, I wouldn't have bought them. I'm not one of those people who buys movies just to support a format or just because they're released on HD-DVD; I buy movies that I like and will most likely watch more than once.

What's stopping me from buying the box, is the "extra's" in SD. If the Animatix was HD: SOLD!!!

Bought the Ultimate box and paid a pretty penny for it with no regrets. I love the first two films and am generally happy to check my brain at the door to enjoy the third. This box re-defines "feature-laden" and offers up truly reference picture quality and sound. I haven't even actually sat through the films themselves yet -- I've spent days playing around with the supplements, watching the movies with the "philosophers commentary" and playing around with the IME.

The only negative -- and it's a big one -- is that the Animatrix is NOT offered in HD. It's 480p MPEG2. Granted, the D2 is a phenomenal upconverting player, so it looks great, but I would have LOVED to see it in HD. Considering it's as much a part of the movies' canon as either of the sequels (and is better than Revolutions outright), I'd have thought it would get better treatment.

Still, the box is an absolute catch-all package for having fun with and showing off HD-DVD's capabilities. Not only are there TONS of special features, but most of them are unusually good (like the commentaries), and no stone has been left unturned in terms of what has been included in the box. It's a truly comprehensive special edition -- the kind that only usually comes along after a format's been established for a while for the double-dip. Like i said, only downside is that so many of the extras, including the Animatrix, are in 480p MPEG2. Other than that, hours of entertainment.

Absolutely no regrets! The Matrix was my first DVD, and the HD-DVD far surpases that one. 2 & 3 are lesser movies, but overall I am really happy with the purchase. I've watched all three once through, and it's worth the money, for any fan on the series, or HD in general. I purchased the Trilogy, as the extras in the Ultimate were in SD.

The battle scene in the Dock area in Revolutions looks absolutely stunning. It is the best looking CG effects I have ever scene. The Machine World scenes are great as well in the dark blue hues and the brilliant light of how Neo sees the Machine World. Just incredible stuff.

While I wasn't a fan of Reloaded when it first came out, I have grown to really like it. Knowing that some of the scenes are a bit too long, make them seem shorter (make sense?), like the dance scene in Zion (felt like it took 30 minutes when I saw it in the theater) and the whole Keymaker sequence. But I think the Bros picked it up for Revolutions and hit a home run with it. Not as good as the first one but pretty close.

Anyway, I love the set and would do it again in a heartbeat!

I considered not buying the box set because I didn't like #2. Now that I've watched Revolutions in all its (720p) HD glory, I say that the trilogy is pretty good and the quality is excellent. If you have HD DVD and some extra $, there is no reason not to buy the set.

I recently got the Complete Trilogy on HD-DVD and I have no regrets whatsoever. In fact, The Matrix was the first movie I watched on my brand new HD-DVD player and I was totally blown away. Well worth the $65 it was going for on Amazon. The first movie is obviously the best, but the other two are alright. I thought they sucked too in the theater, but seeing them a second or third time, they grew on me. And they're worth keeping just to have the whole collection in a nice shiny box (literally).

As a comparison I loaded up the original DVD Matrix (wide-screen edition) and the Matrix HD-DVD back to back on my 32" Samsung LCD. The difference was incredible. No joke, it made the SD version look like a bootleg VHS. The detail was better, far wider color range, better blacks, no compression artifacts, everything was just plain better. I don't understand how people cannot see the obvious jump to HD. Its a big difference. So yes, this collection is well worth getting, even if you have all 3 on regular DVD.

the latter two movies aren't "fluff". You could say that you didn't like them, but if you're calling the latter two movies fluff, you sure as hell didn't understand them.

the movies became progressively esoteric for Western audiences, as the Wachowskis went deeper into the philosophy and pretty much made the story one giant allegory for the philosophy they wanted to present. That was the problem with the movies (if you consider that to be a problem, which I don't).

I paid $58 including 2nd day shipping and after the Google $10 online coupon which equals just over $19.25 per HD DVD movie. It also came with a coupon for a free downloadable copy of the Animatrix via XBox Live.Considering also that the first movie(The Matrix)is imo the reference movie disc for both next gen formats, i in no way regret buying the set. It's one of the best bargains i've gotten this year to date.

The PQ is certainly not top grade in my eyes compared to the SD versions on my Zenith dvb318. Now King Kong and Chronicles of Riddick are another story. I have rented all three and have decided not to buy the set. Money doesn't grow on trees at my house so the PQ has to be that much better then what I am seeing on my Zenith. I will put both the HD and SD movie on at a 3 minute delay with the Sd playing first and toggle every three minutes. Also my 34" set isn't helping things. I am sure on a 60" 1080p set my opinion would most likely change.

I haven't bought it yet (still hoping for singles, I only want the first one) But I find that I usually do regret buying movies only for sound and picture quality, one or two viewings and they sit and collect dust, I don't have friends who are into HT like I am so "demo" material is just a waste for me.

In short I get more use out of a crappy transfer of a movie I really enjoy than a sh*t movie with outstanding sound and picture quality, that's why I only want the first Matrix installment, it's the only one I actually enjoyed in theaters.

Toshiba tech support is now giving users a Warner Brother's phone number -

That you can call and get a replacement set mailed to you free of charge!

Yeah, I ended up selling mine. The first movie is excellent, the other two just bore me.
Had some big bills come in, so I sold mine. I'll re-buy the first one when it is available as a single.

P.S. They looked just incredible!
