Why do 1080P projectors have a higher contrast then 720P projectors? Do the manufacturers need use the higher resolution to help increase the contrast?

The two things are not inherently related.

I think it has more to do with manufacturers putting more $ into higher-end machines. Whether it is the pannel, bulb, iris, etc. if they are going to sell it for more $ they can affort more technology, and the benefits that come with it, in the projector.
