View Full Version : Combine OTA channels with Dish network 322 receiver
kayshav 06-26-07, 02:54 PM I just got Dish TV 322 (the dual tuner gadget). I also have a Channel Master 4228 OTA antenna. Both the receiver and the antenna work perfectly.
I also have dual cable wired to each room (in case I need them).
I would like to combine the OTA channels from the antenna and the Dish channels and feed them together to the Dish receiver and then only use the Dish remote to navigate all the channels. In other words, I want the Dish receiver to handle the OTA channels also.
Per Dish customer support, in order to watch OTA channels, I need to turn off the Dish receiver and use my TV remote controls to watch the OTA channels. The OTA anntenna needs to be connected to the Dish receiver's antenna input. Basically, the Dish receiver is just passing the OTA channels when it is off. The problem with this is that I need to go through multiple steps to watch an OTA channels and further if I need to watch a Dish channels, I need to restore my TV to Ch3 and then turn on the Dish receiver -- too many steps.
Is this possible?
Thanks

mjones73 06-26-07, 03:17 PM Are you trying to receive analog or digital OTA stations? The 322 isn't HD capable so I highly doubt it has an ATSC tuner for digital OTA reception. In order to receive analog channels it needs an NTSC tuner, check the specs on it to see if it has one.

It's not possible then, the 322 doesn't have an ATSC tuner nor can it output HD resolutions.
Best bet is to hook it up to the TV using composite or s-video and hook your antenna straight in so you just need to switch input sources.

What if I want to receive analog channels? Does it make any difference?

Scooper 06-26-07, 03:55 PM OK -
#1 - How many TV's are you feeding with the 322 ?
#2 - Location of 322 / TV1 TV2 ?
Why are you using the TV RF output to TV1 ? You'll get a better picture and stereo sound if you use Svideo/audio or composite video/audio. This way, you set TV 1 to the video input to watch Dish, then use the TV's tuner to watch OTA. No need to turn off tuner 1 to watch OTA TV.
Now - for TV2 - use another cable going from the RF TV2 output to the same room as TV2, along with it's antenna connection. Set the modulator on TV2 to a channel that no locals are using (and you need at least one channel clear on each side of that as well). If you have one, then you can use a signal combiner /splitter and feed both the antenna and this TV2 RF at the same time - if you can't, then use an A/B switch instead.
The combiner or switch idea could also be used for TV1.
kayshav 06-26-07, 04:53 PM This is an amazing forum - the wealth of knowledge is unbelievable.
1. I'm feeding two TVs from the 322.
2. My TV1 is a 65" SD and it is currently connected on S-video to my high-end home theater system. Therefore, I can't use the S-video from the 322 to feed this TV
I will probably feed the RCA from the 322 to the TV and get stereo sound too
3. TV1 has dual tuners. Therefore, I can connect the OTA feed directly to the TV and use it to tune in local channels, without bothering with the 322 ( I was trying to optimize the # of remotes I use :-)
4. Tv2 (another SD) does not have an S-video but has RCA inputs (also has only one tuner). But, since the 322 is in a different room, I can't use RCA outputs from the 322 to feed this TV. I might need to move the 322 close to Tv2 and use the RCA to feed this TV. Is there any way of converting the coax feed into RCA outputs?

Depends if the 322 has an NTSC tuner in it, haven't found anything that states it does.
kayshav 06-26-07, 05:04 PM Scooper,
Sorry, didn't provide all the info.
1. As of now, the 322 is sitting next to TV1.
2. I already have the OTA feed and the output from the 322 for RF-V2 running to the room where TV2 is located. How do I feed both of these to TV2, since it has only one RF input? Will a diplexer help in this situation? And how do I watch OTA on TV2?
Thanks for your help

Scooper 06-26-07, 05:14 PM Signal combiner - you can find them as signal splitters . All you would have to do is select the appropriate channel on the TV. Diplexer is the WRONG thing for this application.
And make sure that the TV2 modulator is set to "On-Air", not cable.
And no - there is no way to change the RF output to composite video without an NTSC (analog) tuner - read VCR as an example.
