Yes, I've seen the other treads and searched, but still don't really have a good answer. I don't care about playing DivX or any other special formats. Just DVDs.

Seems there are a ton of DVD players that do upscaling...what's the big deal/difference? Without buying into a BluRay or HDVD format...Folks seem to like Oppo - why not Onkyo or any one of the many other brands that upsample?

The projector I am thinking of installing is the Mitsubishi HD1000U DLP Projector @ 1500 ANSI Lumens, Native Resolution: 1280 x 720, Contrast Ratio: 2500 : 1 - so 1080 isn't the goal anyway unless I decide to upgrade the projector...hee hee.

A BIG part of what I need is good surround audio from all formats - so the DVD player being the first link in the chain should have the optimum conversion capabilities and output quality. HDMI out is a must for video too.

Suggestions? I've decided to do my shopping from the beginning of the chain first. The source. After this I'll be moving on to surround receiver/amps, then lastly projectors for a final look before room acoustics/decor - of course I realize that a theater setup can only be as good as it's weakest link!

The Oppo 970 or a Sony would be a good option for you. For a little more, though, you can get the Toshiba A2 and play real high def discs (HD-DVDs) and have an excellent upscaler for SD DVDs as well.

I have an Onkyo upscaling changer. I went with it because I wanted a changer and my two choices were Onkyo and Sony. I suppose Sony would be okay, but I'm not fond of that company as a whole, and the Onkyo held six discs as opposed to five.

I like it a lot. I don't notice any flaws in my 50" 720p DLP playing regular DVDs.

If I wanted a single disc, I'm not sure who I'd go with. Probably just bite the bullet and get a Toshiba HD-DVD player or some such.
