View Full Version : October 2 Top Gun HD DVD Exclusive??
Kris Deering 06-26-07, 08:44 PM Just got the newest press release from Paramount that has an October 2 release date for Top Gun on HD DVD. It also says that it is HD DVD only, so this may be an exclusive title.
Great title to see in HD though. Hopefully we'll be seeing lossless audio with this one!

TG in HD DVD, especially IF they release it with THD, that would be awesome!!
Uh, that's classified.
It's what?
It's classified. I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you
:)
rover2002 06-26-07, 09:25 PM Cheers Kris, this is awsome news :D
cnickersonjr 06-26-07, 09:30 PM Why would they make this exclusive? Cause it has features not supported by BD? Like Batman begins?

A highly reliable Paramount insider stated that the HD DVD release of Top Gun will have a TrueHD track. He also said that the BD version will have a PCM track.

The special edition DTS 6.1 is even better. Hopefully if they don't give us truehd, least give the DTS discrete.
Robert George 06-26-07, 11:09 PM Hopefully if they don't give us truehd, least give the DTS discrete.
So, you'd rather have an inferior lossy compressed soundtrack instead of a lossless track just so it can say "DTS" on the case?
Wow.
My Wife will want this one. Plenty of eye candy for her...

Don't you mean the Letterbox Laserdisc? the DVD was pretty weak. The later released SE DVD crushed the original DVD in terms of sound.
If Paramount is going lossless, this is the film to start off with.
This is awsome... another title to add to my list...
steven975 06-27-07, 12:01 AM the inital DVD release had a good soundtrack, but it was 4:3 letterbox, hardly demo PQ material. The later release went with a new anamorphic transfer with DTS-ES.

I do remember those days. I was so freaking sick of "Danger Zone" when I was shopping for my HT equipment -- first LDP, subwoofer, 3 sets of speaker upgrades, first 50 in RP Elite set. I must have had to sit through parts of that movie in 300 different stores over 4 years and 8 states. I was so glad when the DTS LD's and T2 were finally released so I could at least sit through different demo material.

Pretty useless and misleading thread.
OK, I dont know how to post the URL thingys but the BD pre order is on Amazon.

Oh and thanks for trying to post a link to a BD pre-order.
What a putz.
It says that in my post. I dont know why it didnt work. Also, how am I a putz for completely debunking the title of this thread that implies that it is an HD exclusive? Thanks for your "putz" response.

Just how is the title misleading? I don't think Kris Deering is known for being a HD DVD fanboy plus he put two question marks in the title and simply stated what information he had received from Paramount.

Ok then the question marks are indicating he is unsure if it is HD exclusive. It is not. That is all I am saying. I tried to show the simple link and for whatever reason it didnt work. But it is there and Top Gun is simply NOT HD exclusive.

Could simply be a placeholder Amazon does that all the time. But hey come Oct we will know for sure.

Why do you even bother? Take a chill pill pal, the truth will come out sooner or later, no need to troll.

Im sorry it got blown up for no reason. It is a release buy a neutral studio, has threads regarding its release in both forums, and has a listing with release date on Amazon. If that is not enough to indicate to the original poster that it is in fact not an HD exclusive then that is that.

Fear not brother, that will be on the disc as well.
Oh and stop posting using these misleading thread titles. THIS IS NOT EXCLUSIVE!!
Pacific have had this up as October 2nd for over a week now. In the past they have been very accurate with advance dates.
MSmith83 06-27-07, 04:19 AM jiggawhat,
Do you have information on the bit-depth and number of channels of the TrueHD track? It would be interesting to know. Thanks.

Kris, just curious, why haven't the major sites received this press release?
Kris Deering 06-27-07, 11:00 AM Not sure. I received it yesterday and was surprised not to see it announced on some of the other websites. I would post the full email but there is DVD stuff that is embargoed on it. BUT, here is the ONLY info it has for October 2nd, which isn't embargoed:
OCTOBER 2
Funny Face: 50th Anniversary Edition
Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Ken Burns: The War (PBS)
Top Gun: Hi-Definition DVD (only)
Jericho: The First Season
Criminal Minds: The Second Season
Normally they list both BD and HD DVD for their upcoming titles, so I thought it was curious to have HD DVD listed only. I am not trying to sway arguments here, I just thought it was an unusual move for Paramount. Personally I could care less which format or formats it arrives on, I just hope it is a great HD transfer with great audio. This is one of the first movies that really started to perk my interest in sound design when I was young.
Paul Arnette 06-27-07, 11:13 AM Top Gun: Hi-Definition DVD (only)
Is the "(only)" your emphasis or was it one the release itself? Either way, I would be willing to bet that the usage of the term "Hi-Definition DVD" is a generic reference to both BD and HD DVD and that the "(only)" simply means there isn't a SD release.
Kris Deering 06-27-07, 11:32 AM The only was on the press release itself. And Paramount has shown Blu-ray/HD DVD on their lists that I've seen before clearly showing that they would release in both.
I have no doubt that Top Gun will make it to Blu-ray, I am just curious as to why it isn't listed here. What Warner has done in regards to interactivity slowdowns with Blu-ray comes to mind but I don't know for sure.

24-bit master quality audio. Very nice. :D
I, and many others I'm sure, hope Paramount will make this a standard.

Thanks for clearing that up. I understand that they've specified them individually before, but someone new could have written the copy. Anyway, the phrasing to me implies both, otherwise why not write 'HD DVD' and remove all doubt.
Blu Ray isn't allowed to use the word "DVD".
"Blu-ray" didn't write the press release either, did they?
WirelessGuru 06-27-07, 03:04 PM Jeeez!
Don't question the press release, just accept it. It wouldn't be the first time a neutral studio released to HD-DVD only.
Chris Rein 06-27-07, 03:09 PM "Blu-ray" didn't write the press release either, did they?
No, but I'm sure people (read: media) have been told that DVD can't be used when Blu Ray is involved. There was a big snafu over the name. I'm just throwing it out. No need to turn into Mr. Cranky Pants! ;)
DrCrawn 06-27-07, 03:18 PM 24-bit master quality audio. Very nice. :D

Hey MSmith, wuz up? Where do you get the 24 bit info from? Today at Fry's I noticed that Disney puts this info on their back covers, and I was jealous.
I am of the belief that even lossy 24/96 will sound superior to any 16 bit TrueHD track. (puts flame suit on)

Hey Doc,
As I understand it, most modern-day movie master sound tracks are at 48 kHz/24-bit. Many of the TrueHD tracks from Warner and PCM tracks from Sony have a truncated bit-depth, meaning that the master track was truncated from 24-bit to 16-bit prior to encoding. Therefore, there is loss in quality. However, whether it is audible in most home theater setups is debatable. And of course some master sound tracks are natively 16-bit, so no loss there. Universal and Disney seem to be the only studios thus far that have forgone the bit truncation for their lossless or uncompressed tracks.
Since PCM is uncompressed and therefore at a constant bit-rate, we can determine that the 6.9 Mbps bit-rate jigga mentioned means that the track is 48 kHz/24-bit at six channels. The variable bit-rate of the TrueHD track that jigga mentioned indicates the same track specification.

Very interesting, I do not understand the math behind it, but heh. Does each format (for example 6 channel 16/48) have a specific PCM bitrate that is "known?"
Good info there ! ;)

Some serious rumbling going on there, I agree- the ST is awesome.
