I like the spinoff series better where they talk about his laboratory.

I, too, hugely enjoyed Dexter’s first season. Michael C. Hall was great and the concept of the show was inspired. The show is based on a couple of books by Jeff Lindsay, “Darkly Dreaming Dexter,” and “Dearly Devoted Dexter.” I loved them both and am looking forward to the third book in the series, “Dexter in the Dark,” which is to be published in September.

As good as the books have been, I have a lot of hope that Season Two of Dexter will live up to Season One.

would there be any point in reading the first 2 books or are they spoiled by the TV series already?

The books are different... Not to give anything away for either, but the ending of the first book is MUCH different from the first season of the show.

Even so, I am very much looking forward to the new season, whether I would preferred the ending of the book more or not, it doesn't matter :\.

I'm just wondering does Jeff Lindsay have any involvement in the Dexter series at all?

That just appears to be his credit for having the series based on his novel though...

The Dexter series is faithful to Dexter’s character but, as noted by another poster, the books differ markedly from the TV series in their portrayal of some of the other characters and in other details. I had already seen several episodes of Dexter before I read the books and I still enjoyed them hugely.
