I currently have an older dvd player with progressive scan for 480p and no HDMI input. If I were to upgrade to this: http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-D-R400-Tunerless-Upconverting-Certified/dp/B000MY38JE******sr_1_3/103-0025139-8135074?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1182967231&sr=1-3
Would it be worth it? I have an HDTV but after reading around it sounds like it won't make the quality much better. However, my HDTV only has 1 set of component inputs and my set top box is using them and this way I would be able to use the HDMI for the dvd player and not have to swap them all the time. It seems a little silly to spend all that money just for that even though it would be a lot easier, but I was just wondering if there are any other things I might benefit from this one as appose to using my older dvd player.

Your link does not work. Since you don't state your current model or the new model you're considering, it's impossible to tell you whether there will be an improvement in PQ. In general, if the new upscaling player is a good one, then yes, you should see improvement (likely more subtle than dramatic); if you picked a cheap/poor upscaling player, then no, you won't see any improvement, and may see worse PQ. By the name of the link, it looks like a Tosh DVD recorder; in general, recorders are not as good as dedicated players for PQ. Search for Oppo and Sony upscaling players for good value.

The model is : Toshiba D-R400 Tunerless 1080p Upconverting DivX Certified DVD Recorder
My current one is a Sony DVP-NS725P. Would the toshiba not upconvert as well as my current one? If not whats a good one for around 150$. HDMI is needed and a recorder would be nice but if its going to be worse PQ than my current one I'd rather do without it.

Freebird0,
I have been looking at upconverting dvd players as well. As I do not own one yet, I can only recommend based on the findings of my research. The OPPO DV-970HD upconverts to 1080i (approx $150) and the OPPO DV-981HD upconverts to 1080p (approx $230). Both of these have gotten fantastic reviews from multiple sources - "the most bang for your buck". Again, please realize that I do not own and have never used either of these but thought that I could save you some time by relaying the info that I have obtained in my research. Good luck,
Guzz

Apparently you haven't done much of research.
"The most bang for your buck" is a typical one-liner that's being repeated like a mantra by the Oppo camp.
It's not really true anymore.
There are newer, recently released, much cheaper alternatives, that will perfrom on par with Oppo.
Continue doing your research and you'll see what I'm talking about.

First off Unleashed, I'm not pretending to be an expert in this area. This is what I've found from several other AV sites to include "experts" and forum members such as those here. Secondly, that is why I prefaced my statement by saying that is what I have read - not experienced myself.
If you are so well versed in this area as your previous post implies, I think your time may be better spent and much more appreciated if you would provide concrete examples of what your talking about rather than slandering others for their input.

Again, read through the threads, my friend. :)

well, i guess i'm on that "haven't done enough research" band wagon cause from what i've read, people seem to rave so much about what the Oppo's are doing...
(though i feel like i've been reading so much my eyes are starting to cross)

is there anyone thats not stingy with info would like to shine a light on us n00bs?

Philips 5982 or Sony N75H. Both have very good PQ. I compared Philips with Oppo 971H
but the difference in PQ is a washout to justify 3x price of Oppo. I returned Oppo and kept Philips.

Ok thanks. I'm leaning between the Philips and the Pioneer DV400.

You're not wrong. I bought the Philips yesterday (well the euro version) and am very impressed with the quality from it.
