View Full Version : Netflix HD-DVD rentals are WORTHLESS

I am sorry, but I need to vent. I've been a Netflix user since late 2000. Since I bought my Toshiba player, I've have had only **TWO** movies from Netflix work all the way through.

Today, I received four HD discs. NONE of them played all the way through.

It has everything to do with the quality of the disc. The movies I've bought from BB have played perfectly every time. The rentals from Netflix are always TRASHED. I mean they are visibly scratched up *worse* than regular DVDs I've rented from them.

Who the hell is doing this?!

So again, I go to Netflix and click "damaged disc" for four movies. I did this to two HD-DVDs on Thursday.

Has anyone else had this problem or is it just me?

I haven't had any problems. A few discs (3 or 4 out of 30 or 40) skipped a few times though.

Me neither. In fact, Apocalypto would not play on my standard DVD player and that has been my only Netflix problem

I only had one problem disc with Netflix. You, Me and Dupree. I took it as a sign that I shouldn't waste my time.

It is strange how some people have major, persistent problems with Netflix...while others have non whatsoever. As for me, I have no complaints against Netflix.

This problem is ONLY with HD-DVDs... Regular DVDs from Netflix are always fine. Even if they are scratched a bit, they always are playable. The only time I've had problems were due to the postal service physically breaking the discs in transit.

But these HD-DVDs **ALWAYS** look like they've been rubbed with steel wool. It's just downright STUPID! Two of these movies I received today would not even LOAD! The first one got 6 seconds into the Universal logo before freezing.

I started to watch one of the cleaner discs and it made it about an hour before it froze...

I clean the discs and it doesn't help.

I have the HD-XA1 and the latest firmware. (Firmware didn't make a difference, the thing still can't play Netflix discs worth a damn...)

I think the first gen players are very heistant to play a scratched disk...at least that is my experience. I usually wash the disk with warm soapy water and then can get it to play about all the way with only 1 major skip. The player doesnt freeze but the video does. I attribute this to weak technology on first gen players.

I have had much better success with scrathced media in the xbox drive.

I love netflix.

I havent had any problems, if i have a problem, just go online report it and they ship out a new before you even send the broken disc out.

I've had one disc that refused to load until I gave it a good cleaning. Not bad considering I've rented a score of HD DVDs from Netflix.

I do think the latest firmware, 1.6 for my A2, has made it a little less finicky about scratches and fingerprints. I've also had good luck with my Xbox 360 add-on. Even known problem discs like Children of Men played with no hassles.

I've gotten some SD DVDs from Netflix that looked like they'd been used to rake rocks. The majority of the HD DVDs I've received had comparatively few scratches.

I think a lot of it has to do with the type of movies you rent. Ant Bully may be more likely to have peanut butter smudges than Casablanca.

I've gotten a total of about 30 or so BDs and HD-DVDs from netflix. The Mummy HD-DVD skipped at one point, and the first copy of District B13 BD was cracked on the edge of the disc. Other than that, no problems and I'm using an A1 & PS3 for playback.

mine looks like that too but plays on the 360 add on. since the data is smaller and closer together i can understand why it won't play when scratched.

Do yourself a favor sell your XA1 on Ebay and buy a 2nd gen HD DVD player, you won't regret it.

It's a conspiracy against you ;). I haven't had a problem with my xbox hd add-on or my Toshiba D2 with any scratches and only 2 hd-dvd's due to old firmware on the xbox. Averaging about 10 hd-dvd's a month, I guess that comes out to about 70 total. All disks look pristine.

I haven't had any problems with Netflix and HD DVD's so far, but I have had quite a few cracked SD discs come in the mail. It's hard to pinpoint the problem. It could be previous users (and their children), a tired Netflix employee (they have people who come in that process them at like 3am), or even the USPS (and their sorting machines).

Gaithersburg, MD is my local Netflix depot (before it was Worcester, MA) and having been a member since 2001, I've had only one movie out of about 4-500 be scratched or damaged in any way. Again, like the You, Ma and Dupree comment, when the replacement showed up I realized that I shouldn't have bothered, they were doing me a favor.

That said DevoX, maybe they're trying to spare you? j/k

Of course I'd stop renting movies and just buy them before going back to the scam artists at Blockbuster.

Ditto on the cleaning. I use a damp non-abrasive cloth before playing Netflix HD-DVDs and have had no problems. This is through about 20+ HD-DVD discs using the HD-A2.

No complaints. I've had a title or two have the audio and video go out of sync, but it was nothing that a simple pause then play couldn't remedy. I've quite enjoyed Netflix, sorry about your rotten luck.

I had the 360 drive from December to April, and had zero problems. I bought an A1 in April and used 2.2 from day one. I've only really had two "unplayable" movies I rented, but they were fairly early titles (The Last Samurai, Goodfellas) - so they had a lot of rentals under their belt. Newer titles work flawlessly, and lately I've just been getting the older neutral titles on BD (PS3 seems to be a stronger laser). Cleaning does seem to help, before watching.

A lot of it has to do with location. If there are some dipsticks in your area who don't know how to handle the discs, then pretty much anything you rent will be trashed unless you are luicky enough to be the first to rent it.

I've been lucky so far.

I too have only had 1 problem disc so far from Netflix. Luckily it was for my daughter and was the Ant Bully combo. Flipped it over and was OK. The Netflix is not the problem. It is people who destroy rental disks. These are the same ones who drive like maniacs when they have a rental car. It shouldn't be that hard to rent and watch the movie. Take it out of the sleeve, insert and watch it, and take it out and put back in sleeve!

I don't use Netflix, but I use BB. It is amazing how scratched up some of these discs are. You'd think people that were into HD-DVD at this early of a stage would naturally be good about taking care of discs.

As to your problem, I had an XA1 from Sep-Mar. While I loved the build quality, it had issues. If I bought movies it was fine but it seemed to be really finicky about rented movies with scratches, even small ones. Doesn't seem to be an inherent problem with all XA1's as I've read of many happy customers. But maybe some of them have something wrong with them that causes them to have poor error correction.

I switched to an A2 and have never had a skip or lock up.

You may want to consider getting a 2nd gen player or calling Toshiba and look for a repair. It has a 1 yr warranty for parts and I think I've read people have not been charged for labor. If you call them, I think I would tell them that it has problems with discs period as they may just blame it on the rental discs.

Toshiba Customer Support: 1-800-631-3811 (option 1, then option 4).

I feel for ya. Good luck!

Have probably viewed 30-40 movies from Netflix since I bought my A2 and have had a major problem with only Children of Men.

Have had to clean a couple and found out if you use soap you need to do a very good rinse job, once properly cleaned these discs have worked fine.

I do agree with the comments about how some people trash movies, it's unbelievable really. I loaned my once viewed copy of Slapshot 25th Anniversary Edition to a friend of mine, got it back a couple months later and both the case and the DVD looked like they were found lying in the street, it's like WTF?

I have probably rented at least 50 HD discs from Netflix and have only had 2 that would not play (COM was one). I have had others scratched pretty bad, but they played fine.

On a side note, I did get Sneakers from Blockbuster right after it released and it had a huge scuff in one spot. I would think I was the first to rent it, so it had to be a internal handling issue..

Hey neighbor, I get Netflix disks from the same distribution center. I have gotten at least 60 HD DVD's from them since January. Of those disks I really only had issues with two. Either you are having terrible luck or your player is overly sensitive to scratches and you should consider getting it repaired/replaced.

sivartk
06-28-07, 02:06 PM
more data in the same amount of space as a DVD means a smaller "scratch" can potentially damage more data making it harder for the player to do error correction.

Why they are being treated bad in your area is another question.

I rent with Blockbuster and have rented several HD DVDs (all I rent online now - trade them in at the store for and SD DVDs I want to see). I've only had two that wouldn't play. One had a very deep scratch and the other was Good Shepard which wouldn't come up). I got replacement rentals for each and they played fine. The replacements were sent to me within a couple of days. I have a 360 add-on.

I really have to wonder how much of the scratching of the discs is being caused by people and how much is caused by the mail service. I just don't see how people could be causing as much scratching as they have, you'd have to be going out of your way to do it. (Or maybe there's a lot of people that are in serious frisbee withdrawal mode).

Most people don't take care of their personal CDs and DVDs. You can bet they aren't with rentals. It's very rare that I see a person handle a disc properly. Most people don't know or don't care whether they handle the discs properly. They use them for coasters, step on them, drop them, put finger prints on them, anything but handle them by the edge and middle.

I honestly haven't seen that many scratches except children movies that I get for my almost 6 yr old daughter. I have taught her well as she knows to hold the disc by the center and edge. I still won't let her touch my hd-dvd's though ;).

I've had a few bad discs from Netflix. But I haven't really been able to determine whether the problem lies with my A1, the pressing of the disc, or the disc itself (scratches.) Children of Men had all kinds of problems, but from what I read that might have been a production issue. More recently The Good Shepherd locked up so badly a couple of times that I had to turn off my player and restart from the beginning (talk about making a long movie longer.) The thing is that the HD-DVDs that skip on me don't always look terribly beat up. Maybe I need to upgrade the firmware on my A1.

Well, yesterday I did go to Best Buy and brought three of the completely unplayable HD-DVD's from Netflix in with me. The Blue Shirts escorted me out when they saw me trying to load one up. They told me I'd be better off with BR and to come back "when you can afford it."

Okay, I am joking about that.

Anyway, I did bring in discs and try them out. The A2 played all of the discs absolutely fine, even in their nearly destroyed condition.

Time to put the XA1 on eBay, I guess... <sigh>

i have a rare skip, but only once or twice out of 10 or 12 disks rented from netflix. one of them was children of men, and that turned out to be a disk issue.
