View Full Version : was gonna get blu ray but....
HighdefJoe 06-27-07, 11:11 PM I decided to spend about $300 on HDDVD's and 360 games instead. I have the cash for the PS3 right now but after flipping through the blu ray reviews and seeing the Disc rot thread, I've decided to wait. Honestly, there aren't too many good movies over there....yet. I figured I'd spend some money and increase my HDDVD collection and wait to get the PS3 until around November, when Spiderman comes out. :p

Not getting Blu-Ray because of "disc rot" would be the stupidest, most asinine reason I've ever heard. Now, if there isn't a selection of titles that appeals to you, then fine, nothing wrong with that. I found there to be a large selection of appealing titles on both sides.

When I come across what I deem "stupid and asinine reasoning", I don't waste my time commenting, because, well, why bother. I place a higher premium on my time then to waste it in such a fashion. You on the other hand?

Good choice :D
blainehamilton 06-28-07, 12:33 AM Waiting for a finalized player is the reason I'm waiting. That and the fact I won't spend over $200 on the finalized player too.
I'm guessing I'll be waiting until next summer at minimum...
thalazy 06-28-07, 12:40 AM I may rent BR movies from Netflix when I finally get my PS3, but I got my PS3 for gaming and that is all.

Same here. I had a $350 Samsung BDP-1000 from CC. I returned it for this reason. Ordered a used HD-DVD player for $160, 1st gen of course. Still supports all future disc features. :D

Is there a date yet for Profile 2.0?
darinp2 06-28-07, 12:59 AM Ordered a used HD-DVD player for $160, 1st gen of course. Still supports all future disc features. :DAre you sure about that? Why would the HD DVD group make HD PiP an optional feature for players (which your player probably doesn't have the hardware to support) if discs will never support it? They could have left it out of the format as even an optional feature for players if that was the case. You might be right and HD DVD will max out at standard definition for their PiP (secondary decoder basically), since it may never be a mandatory feature.

cnickersonjr 06-28-07, 01:14 AM HD PIP? Over kill! Don't you agree? I would like to see HD extras. (Making of video, Trailers...)
OK. It will support all mandatory disc features :D

well F&%k you for your wonderful reply. Enjoy your large selection of appealing movies. ;)
I was just about to post how much nicer the people are in the HDDVD Software forum as compared the Blu section....... with their smartass comments and such but nevermind.

A little on the harsh side, but the point you make is well founded. I have started to feel like there is a (small) group of supporters of this forum that make it a point to show up in any thread and point out how "stupid" someone is for whatever reason and it is making the whole AVS community look bad. It's starting to leave a bad taste for the HD DVD and Blu Ray threads in general. If someone states incorrect information and you wish to point where they are wrong, please, do so, I'm more than happy to eat crow. But going out of your way to post high-and-mighty "your stupid for thinking that way" comments just makes no sense at all. It makes you look like a jerk, plain and simple.

Darin you are beating the drum on this issue. ;) My attitude is rather simple on the whole matter. If HD DVD is still around if and when studios are doing HD PiP, I will gladly upgrade my player if it is important to me at the time. I don't think it will happen or be of much importance, but we will see. It is likely that many of us will upgrade our hardware anyway (some have already, many BD owners have and will as well). Perhaps this will be a BD only feature and life goes on for HD DVD and SD secondary streams. Disc size may also be a concern especially for HD DVD.
I think to push the idea that current HD DVD hardware may not be entirely future proof is genuinely accurate, but lets not put the cart completely ahead of the mule yet. When you weigh both formats capabilities with respect to interactivity, BD still had a lot to prove in the real world sense. It all looks great on paper though I admit.
iqjumpuw 06-28-07, 03:19 AM I have both and they are both fine. However, some Blu-Ray movies can look horrible on certain scenes. BestBuy has a promotion where you can choose any 2 HD DVDs for free when you buy the xbox 360 hd dvd player add-on. Cost-wise, HD DVD wins hands down.
dildatonr 06-28-07, 08:24 AM When are those 50GB HDDVD discs going to become a reality?
That would really level the playing field - once BR got its hardware act together.
I'm trying to urge my friends to hold out for dual format players at this point.
If they're really poor I tell them to get an A2.
Other than that i now tell them to look at the list of titels both formats have and do a runnign count of everything out and announced for release that they want. See which side wins and buy that one if they CAN'T wait for a dual forma tplayer. Samsung is allegdly releasing one as early as next month. I fully intend on buying it once it does. If you CAN'T wait and you want BR - get the PS3. Because you have at least some chance of making some money back when dual format players become the norm. Any honest BR owner will tell you the BR standalones are janky as hell for the money.

Ditto, although $299 is my price point to go neutral. I'm keeping fingers crossed (but not holding my breath) for Christmas.
