View Full Version : Just back from Wal Mart (Canada)
willise 06-28-07, 07:45 PM Two weeks ago, I bought a couple of HD DVD's at my local Wal Mart (eastern Canada). They had a fair selection, maybe 30 titles of each format. tonight, I went to browse the selection and it wasn't there anymore. I asked the clerk and he pointed me to the "new" selection. There was 2 HD DVD's and maybe a dozen BD's. When I asked what happened, he told me that they were not going to be carrying either format just yet as they were selling very poorly. Wal Mart, at least in my area, doesn't sell the players of either format.
Seems like even with the current incentives for HD or BD, the general public just doesn't care about HD at all. Realistically, I know about 2 or 3 people who know anything about HD, other than satellite TV. It looks like SD DVD will reign supreme for many years to come.
David Susilo 06-28-07, 07:52 PM the number one problem with retailers selling HD movies is pricing.
Anybody who are into HD right now are enthusiasts. Enthusiasts tend to be internet savvy. Internet savvy people tend to know that pricing at Amazon.com is far cheaper than any B&M stores in Canada. Thus the purchase of HD medias NOT from B&M stores hence the lack of sales of those items.
thewretched22 06-28-07, 11:34 PM Where exactly in Eastern Canada are you at? My local Walmart here in Truro has 3 times as many BD's as it does HD DVD's but consistantly gets in most of the new releases on both formats.
David Susilo 06-28-07, 11:45 PM oh yeah, Wally World at Markham, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, they all have HD DVD and BD in abundance. With REALLY thick layer of dust, mind you... but in abundance nevertheless.
ryoohki 06-29-07, 12:08 AM Walmart price were nice at the start but they bumped the prices about 4-5months ago.. and you can get better deal at Futureshop,Best Buy and Local Store on most new release.. Here they are about 2-3$ more than any other places..

Yeah especially teh Paramount and WB titles which use to all be about $23-24 bucks are now $28. I don't think i have actually bought anything from them yet but the High-Def section use to be about even and now its leaning in Blu-ray direction by about 65-35 ratio. Tons of movies at my local Burlington store but prices aren't good. Just do what everyone else does and buy from Amazon.com and save a ton of money. Can't beat the prices and the exchange rate right now.
One of the 3 Wal-Marts here in St. John's did the same, none of either format any more. The others have the same stock, which is probably about 75% Blu-Rry to 25% HD DVD. Combo discs are brutally expensive at Wally World too, $39.83 or so for them!! Future Shop is the cheapest B&M from what I've seen, now that's sad!
Tes7769 06-29-07, 09:52 AM All of my local Walmarts have about 10 tiles for each format. The reason my nearest Walmart gave for not having more yet is that they have had a high theft rate with both format's movies and that they were trying to secure them in security devices which didn't work out very well because of size. They are currently looking for a better way to display them more securely before they add more to the section.Incidently, both BRD and HD DVD sell pretty well for them, unfortunately alot are stolen to.
David Susilo 06-29-07, 09:54 AM stolen = cheaper than Amazon.com :D
eXstasie 06-29-07, 11:14 AM The Wal Mart's around the GTA have tons..I was at the Wal-Mart Superstore on Eglinton, and they probably had like 20 of each fomaat (a bit more BD), but the thing was they had the latest releases too! Which was awesome. Even though I don't buy from them cause its still more than Amazon...
kamikaZi_blitz 06-29-07, 01:42 PM I live in Canada also and pretty much every store in town (Saskatoon) carries a pretty pathetic selection. To be honest I have been just buying SD's lately because when every story is having 2 for $16, how can I lose? I really wish retailers would get on the ball and make these movies abit cheaper, but at this moment in time my HD-DVD collection will cease to grow while my DVD collection grows by 6 every week.

Really??? Last time I was there, they had way more - like 50-75 titles in each HD-DVD and BD, and muliple copies of the more popular titles. That was a while ago - I see little point in going, since they jacked the prices up so much.
