hey guys. i have a samsung HL-S6187W DLP set, with my PS3 hooked up video HDMI for video, and optical to my reciever for audio. reciever is a yamaha HTR-5930

looking at my BD/DVD audio and video output options, which is best? whats teh difference and what should i go with?

BD/DVD video output format (HDMI)
automatic
RGB
Y Pb/ Cb Pr/Cr

BD audio output format (optical digital)
Bitstream
Linear PCM

also, it has BD 1080P 24Hz output (HDMI)
Automatic
Off

what is the difference between these, which one is better? will one only work with certain equipment????

thanks in advance guys

unfortunatley, folks here are rather stuffy and will not reply to your post. They will tell you to use the search function. But yet they will create threads about who has the better tv and argue about it for 20 plus threads.

which setting is best is really up to your liking and your set. i have a samsung HL-R5067W with HDMI connected to the receiver and ps3 going to the receiver via hdmi. my receiver is the sony str-dg910.

here are my settings in bold:

BD/DVD video output format (HDMI)
Automatic
RGB
Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr

under rgb BTB is not passed, you can test BTB by using a Sony BD disc such as Casino Royale and hit triangle at the main menu and enter in 7669 then Enter to bring up the calibration menu. the first screen has black bars on black background. there are a total of 3 bars that can be seen by increasing brightness. if BTB is passed you can see all 3 bars as you adjust ur brightness. i believe the correct brightness setting is at the point right below where the rightmost bar is visible, basically at where you see a complete black background. if you go with RGB you also have 2 options of Limited or Full under the Display settings. Full seems to give richer blacks but some crushing comes along and BTB does not pass, i only see 2 black bars under this setting even with brightness set to max.

BD audio output format (optical digital)
Bitstream
Linear PCM

if u're on optical this is a no-brainer, go with bitstream. if using hdmi, which one u choose here decides who (ps3 or receiver) decodes the audio signals. bitstream lets ps3 pass the signal to the receiver to be decoded and LPCM lets the ps3 decode the signal then passed the decoded signal to the receiver for outputting to speakers. i use hdmi and have it set to Bitstream b/c i found the quality of the receiver's decoding for DD and DTS to be much better than the PS3. since pcm tracks dont require decoding, ps3 can pass that via bitstream to the receiver for output just fine. i don't currently have a disc yet with TrueHD, i think for this codec i will have to use Linear PCM setting as i believe TrueHD has to be decoded natively.

don't know much about this one, but since my tv is only 720p, i put it on off.

This allows the PS3 to Output 1080p24hz if you have a compatible TV. If your TV can accept it, chances are it's prominantly in the manual or on the box. If you've got a 720p tv, like he said, no need to turn it on.

24fps film playback is a nice feature to have on regardless of the native resolution of the display.

how would one find out if his tv supports this feature?

look in the video specifications in your manual or data sheet for your tv model. it should say 1080P 24Hz, 30Hz, 60Hz or something similar to that.

24fps film playback is a nice feature to have on regardless of the native resolution of the display.

Though to exploit 1080/24p connectivity (and benefit over 1080/60p connectivity) you need a display that will not only accept 1080/24p but also that refreshes at an integer multiple of 24Hz - to remove the 3:2 repetition used at 60Hz, and instead allow 2:2 - 5:5 repetition where each source frame is displayed for an equal duration, rather than the asymmetric approach of 3:2 which adds temporal distortion.
