bcrossan7 06-29-07, 09:44 PM I could use some advice on a couple audio video settings in the XMB.
First my gear:
Denon AVR-4306 Receiver http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/2243.asp
Infocus IN72 720P Projector http://www.infocus.com/Products/Projectors/IN76.aspx
HDMI connection from receiver to PS3
For audio what is the highest linear pcm setting I can go to? Right now it is at 5.1 96 kHz and I couldn't really find anything in the receiver manual to suggest which 7.1 setting I could use.
For video what are the best settings in the Display Settings menu for?:
Cross Color Reduction Filter - On/Off
RGB Full Range - Full/Limited
Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White
Thanks for any help!
:D
bcrossan7 07-01-07, 12:03 PM turn power "on"
gee thanks
Mobius_570 07-02-07, 08:17 AM Not too sure on this. Did you post this question in the Audio Forum and/or the Blu-Ray Hardware Forum too? Those guys really know their crap and might be able to give you some good advice.
for video, RGB range will depend on your set. enable Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr super-white. afaik, CCRF only applies to AV/S-video connection. in BR/DVD settings, set BR/DVD output to Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. if you have Avia or Digital Video Essentials, set brightness, contrast etc to the correct levels. if you don't have those, use the THX optimizer found in THX optimized films (such as Star Wars, Monster Inc, The Incredibles, Pirates of the Caribbean, for example... there should be a THX logo on such films). the THX optimizer is found in the setup menu.
once brightness is set correctly, change BR/DVD output to RGB and go back to the THX optimizer and see if your brightness level is the same (but don't change your brightness setting). if it's not the same, change RGB range to the other setting (if it was on full, change it to limited, if it was on limited, change it to full) and see if the black levels are the same; if they are, go back to BR/DVD settings and set it back to Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. this way, BR/DVD black levels will be identical to xmb/video games (xmb/games use RGB, BR/DVD uses Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr now that we've set BR/DVD to output that way).
i actually don't know if this method will work for everyone and there may be an easier way. but this is what i did and it was worth it so i could have the same brightness settings for blu-ray/dvd and video games/xmb. my set can switch from full/limited range RGB within the TV's settings. afaik, all displays are different, so whether or not to use Full/Limited will depend on your display.

first thing you want to set the ps3 to 720p, leave the 1080i box blank under display settings. this gets rid of one step of signal converting and yielded better visual quality for me and my 720p dlp tv. if u have 1080i checked the ps3 will convert 1080p on the source to 1080i, which is then converted to 720p by ur projector. if ur projector can accept 1080p signals, however, you can check that box and see if 1080p or 720p gives better results. run the automatic option to see which signals are supported.
since you got a sick receiver, you should set the hdmi audio output to Bitstream instead of Linear PCM. basically it means for DD and DTS signals your receiver will do the decoding, which imo produces much better results than if u set it to pcm and let the ps3 do the decoding. for uncompressed lossless audio tracks on blu-ray discs either setting produces the same result. for truehd however, you will probably have to set the ps3 to linear pcm in order to hear the track. i don't have any movies with truehd yet so i cannot verify this as of yet.
i'm not sure if u plan to use the ps3 for blu-ray mostly or dvd, but if it's blu-ray u're looking into i suggest using a blu-ray disc to do your calibration. i use the casino royale sony test pattern (go to main menu, hit triangle to bring up option screen, and hit 7-6-6-9-ENTER to access test screen) and the T2 THX optimizer with the blue filter from my avia disc. you will want to run all kinds of combinations of YCbCr/RGB(full/limited) to see which setting allows ur display to pass BTB. the way to do this is run the sony pattern, in the first screen look at the lower right corner's black area. there are 3 black bars there that u should be able to see by turning up brightness if btb is passed. if btb is not passed you will only see 2 bars. go with one of the three settigns on BD/DVD Display (YCbCr, RGB Full, RGB Limited) that passes BTB (blacker than black, if not passed u'd lose some black detail whether or not u can tell the diff). on my set it's YCbCr. to set brightness properly, u want to set it to where all 3 bars just blend into the background so u see no distinguishable bars, or use the t2 thx optimizer disc for all the settings.
using DVD or Blu-Ray setup disc shouldn't matter. and as of firmware 1.82, nothing passes BTB except Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. you should use Y Cb Cr for BR/DVD output anyway and like i said, set RGB range to whatever matches Y Cb Cr.
also, i disagree that you should blindly uncheck 1080i, it will be different for each display, and its subjective which looks better. to me, on my set, 1080i looks better for blu-ray movies despite my set being 720p native. 1080i looks slightly sharper and more detailed. GT:HD does as well, but i notice more jaggies compared to 720p. some games do, however, look better at 720p than 1080i (R6 Vegas for example).
