So I am in need of a new coffee table and coincidentally a bigger sub. I've never built a sub (or much of anything) before but I'd like to give it a try.

My idea is this. A couple drivers pointed upward with a glass top so you can see them thump. How much space between the glass and the drivers would I need to make it work, if it will work at all? WAF is not an issue, I don't have one:). Any recommendations on driver size and what size box I need would be appreciated. Just trying to get pointed in the right direction.

I could be wrong here..... but the ammount of pressure going to the back of the glass might crack it. I dont even know if you got a 3/8" tempered glass if that would work..... plus you would need to rise the glass 2-3" over the drivers to make sure the drivers dont hit the bottom of the glass.... Im sure it could be done if designed properly...

If it was me..... i'd go with a 3/8 or 1/2" piece of tempered glass say..... 14" X 48" (size may vary)

enclosure of the same size..... say 14"D x 48"w x 12"h = 4.66^3

on the top of the table I would resess the subs, and add 4 2" wooden dowels to the corners with a silicon rubber disk for the glass to rest on.

Bottom of the table, put the ports..... or side firing. aswell as the plate amp, or hookups for an external amp.

Here is a table sub I drew up for a friend, you could do a see thru top.

Bossobass used a glass plate in his project (http://web.mac.com/bossobass.com/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html) using pretty substantial drivers.

i would definitely use opposed mounting, else you're gonna get some vibration for sure
