Man with a plan, calm enough to sustain his ground.

At this point it should be pretty much clear, that SONY is ready for round #3.

The only issue I have with his comments is that unlike Xbox 360, which had 'no competition' with 'next generation' consoles for 1 year, the PS3 has to continuously compete with Xbox, but more so with Nintendo as well. Once you install a large enough fan base, it potentially gets easier to sell more consoles (if you have an Xbox, and your friends come over and play, they are more likely to buy an Xbox). If the PS3 did not have blu-ray, the console would be a complete disaster as likley they would not have even sold have as many as they have, primarily as they have no games. Even with upcoming games unique to both platforms, new users are either going to buy what their friends have, or buy something that 'everyone' is talking about (system sellers such as Gears of War last year and Halo 3 this year). GTA4 going multiplatform is/was huge for Xbox, as many Xbox gamers might have bought a PS3 for that game alone.

The biggest factor in Sony's favor is the huge install base of Ps2 users and many of them may stick with brand loyalty. However, because playing PS2 games on a Ps3 did not look any differnt (and sometimes worse) until recently there was no reason to get a Ps3. many of then just got a Wii instead because it was unique. Similarly, the PS2 continues to outsell the PS3, and this does not make any business sense. They need to stop making the PS2. This trend is continuing.

I believe the wii demonstrated the desire in consumers for innovation. Right now, the ps3 and xbox have the same old games, just prettier. Innovation will win the opinions of the average gamer and this will be achieved with stonger gaming ideas such as the ps eye and home. Sony is hedging that the myspace generation will take advantage of such interactivity, but the social games are yet to come out and this is what Phil is telling us to wait for

Do you know how large the 360 install base really is?
How many copies of Gears of War have been sold to date?

As far as the PS2 is concerned, they are not going to stop selling it, unless people stop buying it.
It partially covers the cost of launching the PS3.

At the end of this year, it's going to be really good to be a gamer. I'll get Halo 3 and Bioshock on the 360, and half a dozen AAA titles on the PS3. More consoles. more games, more fun.

I am 100% certain I do not know that. :)
I am also 100% certain all numbers must be grossly inflated.

I just checked and apparently Gears didn't sell 5M copies yet.

don't feed the troll. If you quote him, I'm forced to read his comments eventhough he is on my ignore list

Anyway, I have been tempted to get the 360 again because my friends have it, but i would rather work on convincing them to get a ps3 since i enjoy it way more. Larger install base or no, the front line employees decide console fate in the end. Right now, I am at work discussing with a co-worker why he bought a wii. He says the salesperson at EB told him to save his extra money for now and get a wii because it is fun and family friendly. He wants a ps3, but is overruled by his wife and daughter.

What sony needs is more promotion for fun games like calling all cars (which my wife absolutely loves) and more sympathy from the salespeople. They will get both in the fall when little big planet and home come out.

In a couple of years when most households will have hdtv's the masses will convert to the ps3 and x360. Right now people are happy with what they have. The parents are saving money and their kids are happy..so far. When the kids realize what they can have, by seeing these next gen consoles on hdtv's at their friends homes, they will want one. The parents having a nice new hdtv will oblige and purchase these next gen consoles in masses..for their kids and themselves. The prices for them will come down by then and the games for these systems will only get better. Most consumers right now know what hdtv is but will not pay for it because of the cost. They look at it and say it looks great but it is not worth it. In a couple of years when everything goes digital alot of people are going to realize how good hdtv and hi-def gaming is and the ps2 will be irrelevant in most households.

We know its millions more than the PS3
We know its millions more than the the two highest selling PS3 games combined

We know Microsoft Office is making a few billion in sales, unless people stop buying it this partially covers the expenses of building the XBox brand.

Still cannot help but bring MS into everything here can we?

OT Phil is ignoring the differences between when the PS1 and PS2 were released and today. The PS1 and PS2 were quickly discounted and had so many exclusive games they crushed the competition. The PS3 is in no position for a price break and third parties are FAR less likely to make AAA exclusives anymore. Square flooded the Playstation brand with hit RPGs in the good old days and Rockstar did the same with GTA. With the extra time and $$ it takes to develop those games its just not possible to duplicate that type of support this generation.

As nintendo can tell you with the N64 and the Wii: Past performance is NOT indicative of future results.

Phil truly has a long term approach for success in the video game market. I think he has a vision for what the PS3 can be and it doesn't depend on such an explosive start. Slow and steady wins the race. Especially if blue ray wins and the PS3 sees massive price drops. Oh yeah, there had better be some games too. I think all of these things will probably happen. It will be interesting to see.

Anyway, I like Phils demeanor. He handles himself very well. His counterparts from other companies can come off as jerks sometimes. Peter Moore is one example. I don't believe a word that comes from that spinsters mouth. But, I always listen, because he is a very charismatic and entertaining fellow.

Don't get me wrong, I know that Phil is a spinster too. But, I can't help but find him a little more trustworthy than Peter. I think it was a good move on Sony's part to hire him and put a trustworthy personality to their PR.

I was just responding to a previous comment.
Is that legal?

I dont think the war is over yet and this holiday season will be crucial for Sony. Put up or shut up time is rapidly approaching for the PS3 .
