hi there, i have the pioneer DVR543HS. I have a couple of recordings on the HDD.
I want to copy them onto a blank DVD-R but using a PC format like .avi or .mpg.
I did it today but the recorder ended up making an actual DVD disc that can be played on another DVD player. how do i copy a HDD recording onto a blank DVD using a PC format?

,,,By putting the finalized disc in the pc, transferring it to the pc's drive, and using a transcoding program to create an avi, I suppose.
I don't think a set top dvd recorder can create a file in anything other than standard dvd-video.

do you know of a transcoding program that can do this?

Try this:
1. Copy to disc from the HDD DVD recorder.
2. Use DVD Decrypter to import the DVD to your PC. Set up DVD Decrypter to copy the DVD as one VOB file. This is adjusted in the settings. The result will be one large VOB file as opposed to the several that were created when the DVD was burned on the DVD recorder.
3. Change the file extension of the imported file from VOB to MPG (optional). The result will be one file that most DVD authoring tools will recognize.
Google DVD Decrypter. It is a free program.

There are many. Check at Videohelp.com.
I use AutoGK and EasyDivX, both of which convert DVD titles directly to XVid/DivX avi files.
