View Full Version : LG BH100 - Hardware problem or multiple disc failure?
malichai 07-01-07, 11:28 PM I have an LG BH100 dual-format player. I haven't had any problems with a couple of HD-DVDs I've played but all of my the Blu-Ray discs I've tried have frozen up on me repeatedly. With a January firmware Pursuit of Happyness froze up 10-15 times. Also with a January firmware, The Prestige froze up about 30 times. I then updated to a May firmware, and The Prestige froze another 10 times (I was on the last half of the movie at that point). Also with the May firmware, Talladega Nights froze up 7-8 times.
When the movies freeze, half the time it'll come back in the same place after 15-30 seconds. The other half the time the movie skips forward 5-30 minutes. If I hit the fast-forward or rewind button while the movie is frozen, it'll rewind from the frozen spot.
This has been quite the pain in the ass. I have to assume that with 2 different movies with the most current firmware, it has to be a player problem.
Thoughts?
samsungmaster 07-02-07, 05:24 AM Unplug the machine then plug it back in and try the bluray movies again. If it continues to lock up on this disc send the unit in for repair. Sounds like the bluray laser is going bad.
malichai 07-02-07, 05:25 AM Well, I watched Payback tonight. Had only 3 freezes. Then watched an HD-DVD, Smoking Aces. 2 freezes, one of which hard-locked my machine and I had to reboot, so I'm guessing I have some manner of hardware failure.
Maybe you have a hardware problem. My machine came with the March FW and I noticed the sort of problems you report. Since I updated to the May FW I have not experienced any problems with freeze ups. I assume it is still under warranty. Maybe you should consider returning it.
malichai 07-06-07, 04:12 PM I have to pay $69 to get it replaced. I thought it was 1 year parts/labor, but LGE said 90 days labor. They're going to send a box/shipping label. Will supposedly take 4-6 weeks to get the box, send the box back in, and receive my replacement. Man, this really blows. 4-6 weeks? Unacceptable. This is the last LG product I purchase.

Yeah that doesn't sound too good. sorry about that. I guess you didn't buy it from a high service dealer? I know I didn't. I bought from Graffiti here in the DC area. If something went wrong with mine I have no confidence that they would do anything to help. It's not good news that LG themselves are also not particularly responsive.
rexdigital 07-06-07, 04:58 PM wow thanks for the info.
I guess I will definitely NOT be buying the LG player.

Are you sure you are getting a box and a replacement unit? The warranty is 90 days labor and 1 year parts. Normally they will send you shipping labels and you will need to supply the box and packaging and ship the unit to LG and they will repair it and send it back to you.

Well eveyone has to make up their own minds but the player is really pretty good.
I think the PQ is much better than the BR player I had on loan for a while. The new HD sound formats are still a bit quirky--sometimes I get lip sync probs and other times not--but when they work they are great and I'm pretty sure they will sort that out at some point. Since there is no other dual format player on the market this one is the only option and it's not a bad one. If you are patient I suppose others will appear sometime in the next year but until then......

Are you kidding me? Wow. Now i'm really pissed.
Wow, one person has a defective unit that's going to cost him a whole whopping $69.00 to get it fixed, and people start spouting stuff like, "Well I'm definitely NOT buying an LG."
All electronics have occasional issues. I have the LG and I'm extremely happy with it. And I would recommend it to anyone interested in a dual/multi-format solution. It produces a fine picture, and even DD/DTS audio through the digital coax sounds fantastic.
4-6 weeks is quite a while though. I had my Toshiba HD-A1 go belly up outside of warranty and Toshiba fixed it for free with a turnaround time of a bit more than a week.

Exactly. I understand electronics break and must be replaced. I just expected better service on a $1200 disc player.
Well good for Toshiba. But, Toshiba doesn't MAKE a dual-format player at this time.
BTW, $1200 isn't exactly a lot of money in the video/audio consumer electronics arena. Now if you would have paid $12,000.00 for the unit, then I might say you have something to gripe about. Moreover, if you buy a $120,000.00 pair of Wilson Speakers, the factory reps will even come to your house and set them up for you. See how service improves as you add zeros?
malichai 07-28-07, 05:38 AM Figured I'd update to say that it actually only took 2 weeks. My player was repaired and has flawlessly played through 12 hours of Blu-ray discs.
samsungmaster 07-29-07, 07:54 AM Wow, 12 hours of bluray thats longer than I tested it on bluray. Technically, I had to test other formats as well.
