What do you have your PS3 set to in the video output area?

I've read that most games (if not all so far) are written for 720p. The best looking images come from 720p when playing games. This is my personal opinion and it seems to be what most agree on here.

But, blueray movies are output at 1080p. If we set our displays to 1080i the movie will be downconverted on the PS3 from 1080p to 1080i, and then once again on our displays to 768p. If we set our ps3's to output 720p the movie gets down converted from 1080p to 720p, and then our displays upscale that to 768p.

I've tested blueray movies at 1080i and 720p and I honestly can not tell the difference. So right now I'm leaving the 1080i unchecked and only outputting 720p.

What about you guys? What do you have your PS3 set to output if your native resolution is 768?

I find it will entirely depend on your TV's scaling ability. Mine does a really nice job with the more information it's given. The picture is just cleaner when the image starts at 1080i, unless of course its native 720 (ie. ESPN and Resistance.) Thus I will play the games at the res they give me, 720 or 1080i unless I see some horrible image rendering. But BR looks sweet at 1080i.

For some reason with the Xbox 360 my Sharp Aquos looks better at 720P. However, I have just got a PS3 and I have tested with 720P and 1080I and 1080I looks better seems strange.

When did the PS3 get the ability to output BR movies at 720p? Last time I checked 480p, 1080i, and 1080p were all you could get.

mine is a 788p native LCD RPTV SONY and it always looks better with 1080i, whether it be the PS3 or cable channels, etc.

as of firmware 1.8, the ps3 can scale BR movies to 720p.

Well now Sony has given the Bluray and 1080i only people what they wanted. They screwed the pooch, by making 1080i more important than native resolution. Now if you have a game that is 720p native but supports 1080i scaling (to quiet all those who have 1080i only sets) The PS3 will ignore the games native resolution and scale it to 1080i if you have 1080i selected as an output format on your PS3. Some say cool...1080i is better than 720p. to that I say BS..because R6LV is now being scaled from 720 to 1080i by the PS3, then back to 720 by my tv. Come on Sony how hard would it be to have the PS3 look at the Available outputs selected and output the game in the native resolution, IF it is checked..if the native is NOT checked. THEN and only then should it be scaled. up or down...

This isn't true, and it's not Sony's fault, either. Each game chooses to handle this differently.

Virtua Fighter 5 and Sonic The Hedgehog are 720p native, and if you have 720p checked in the XMB they'll run in 720p, regardless of your 1080 settings. But if you have 1080i checked and 720p unchecked, they'll switch to 1080i.

It sounds like R6:V is defaulting to the highest setting and you're just assuming everything else does, too. You're wrong.

I know VF5 didnt do this.. I'll have to get it back out and see if this were a change in the 1.80 software that allowed BD to do 720. Have you verified with VF5 since 1.80? (been too busy playin warhwak, and I dont own Sonic.

Last I checked Sony didn't give the PS3 the ability to scale games. That was left to the games authoring. Resistance can't upscale. It says according to Gamespot (i don't have the game to check) that the R6:V native resolutions supported are 720p, 1080i for R6:V. As such the PS3 will pick 1080i if you have both checked. Therefore if the 1080i and game allowed upscaled 1080p look like crap I suspect it was due to bad authoring of the game and not a function of the PS3. VF5 didn't upscale unless the 720p was unchecked because the game's authors wanted it to run at native res unless you intended otherwise. Now the upscaled image by the PS3 was outstanding in VF5's case.
