Hello,

Basically the heading says it. What reote code should I use for my onkyo reciever. It displays two codes, but one only turns it off and another only turns it on.

Also any way to get it to change inputs

Otherwise, you could just get a Harmony, IMHO. It will do all that you need and much more if it supports your device. It is the easiest way to replace remotes that are not doing what they are supposed to or have been lost since the Harmony software does not use codes, or learning functions (although they have that capability too), but a 175,000 device database.

Check this review for the Harmony 720 available for $150 from Costco.com (and possible also in Sam's Club stores) and see if you think you would like it.

You will probably not like it though if you are used to programming your own macros like URC remotes. Logitech uses "wizard" like menus to help you set up the remote so you cannot precisely control exactly what the software is doing.

I would buy it from a source with a friendly return policy in case (a) you don't like it, or (b) it will not operate your device correctly (although tech help may be able to solve your issue in that case).

P.S. I would estimate a 99.9% chance that the Harmony will operate an ONKYO receiver.

It's a bit tedious process, but since you asked for it, I'll outline how it can be done. Essentially, you would be combining the two setup codes (I assume you already found AUX/0842 and AUX/0135). First, set the AUX to 0842:
1. Press and release AUX
2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice
3. Type 0842

Now you can enter advanced codes for all the commands that you need from this setup code. For example to set Power Off to shift-power (shifted function is pressing and releasing SETUP and then pressing the key):
1. Press and release AUX
2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice
3. Type 994
4. Press and release SETUP
5. Type 00170
6. Press and release SETUP
7. Press and release POWER
The remote should blink twice to confirm.

Now, when you press and release SETUP and then press POWER, it will turn off the receiver. You can repeat the steps above for the other functions in this setup code:
ENTER = 00114
MENU = 00107
DISPLAY = 00104
EXIT = 00100
SURROUND = 00040
DVD = 00060
STEREO = 00036
where you use the numbers above for step 5 and key you want to assign that function to in step 7. Skip step 6 if you don't want to assign the function to shifted key (most cases you don't; just for power since the receiver has separate function for On and Off).

Once you are done with that code, set the AUX to 0135. Whatever you programmed above will stay that way, even when you changed the setup code to 0135. The volume keys, channel keys and the power on should work. You can program the rest of the functions using the same steps for entering advanced codes above. Again as an example, to set input select CD to key "9":
1. Press and release AUX
2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice
3. Type 994
4. Press and release SETUP
5. Type 00057
6. Press and release 9
The remote should blink twice to confirm.

You can do the steps above for the following functions:
Video 1 (I think that's VCR) = 00058
Video 2 (I think CBL/SAT) = 00054
Tape = 00053
Tuner = 00166
UP arrow = 00191
DOWN arrow = 00195
LEFT arrow = 00188
RIGHT arrow = 00192
Test = 00255
Dimmer = 00128
Sleep = 00093
Speakers A = 00233
Speakers B = 00231

You can also avoid all this key punching by getting a JP1.x cable to connect the remote to a computer, and use software to program all the functions and then upload it to the remote. You can read about how to do that and where to get the cable starting here (http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1009).

Would getting a Harmony remote not remove any need for all that cr*p?! Just curious ...

Sorry to bring back an old thread but I'm having a similar issue and wanted to know where to get the advanced codes to switch the inputs and do the shift power off on an Onkyo 505 with a comcast 3 DVR remote. Specifically the VCR/DVR and DVD inputs.

When I tried to setup the shift power on my TX-SR505 it instead set it to AM and takes it on and off stereo heh.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me out.

I have EXACTLY the same problem. I was looking for a solution, also. There must be a newer set of codes to make the Comcast remote control work with fairly new Onkyo equipment.
