Hey all-
I just got a new Samsung 4665 LCD tv and have an amazing Onkyo receiver (no HMDI)... I am at a loss on how to setup my system with these components. I also just got an Oppo 981...
I was thinking that to direct connect the Dish Network box and the Oppo to the TV and then connect the Receiver to the tv... Does this make sense or am I really off base?
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated...
Thanks,
T

The only thing you gain by connecting the components via HDMI to a receiver is one less botton to push when switching components, and not having to run a seperate audio cable to your receiver (which even some receiver WITH HDMI require you to do).
Your setup sounds good, if you need more HDMI ports, get a switcher from monoprice.com.

Thanks for the input... I wasn't really looking forward in replacing my current Onkyo...

i am in the same boat (no HDMI on the receiver). i just run my video from the component to the TV and then run the audio from the component to my onkyo receiver. there is definitely nothing wrong with doing it that way. it works as well as any other way. you just may have to push an extra button or two.

Component video switches go for about $30 and they have remote controls. you just have your universal remote operate it when you change a source. HDMI is truly overrated and moving away from analog only gives the pigopolist media companies more ways to screw us all.
I have two HDMI components and an HDMI-less receiver. Count me in the crowd that goes direct to the TV for video. :)

Don't all of the Oppo models do upscaling through component. I know that at least some do. If yours doesn't, I'd sell it and get one that does. Your Dish receiver should do component out also. That would make your setup pretty easy. I'm sure your receiver does at least 2 to 1 component switching.

None of the Oppos do for commericial css protected discs. The 970 should for nonprotected discs, I'm not sure about the 971.
You can hack one of the Oppos to upscale any commercial disc through component. I THINK it's the 970.
But it only goes up to 1080i, not 1080p, IIRC, and is really only of interest to those who need upscaling over component (like if you have an HDTV without HDMI/DVI), or otherwise want to avoid HDMI. If you want upscaling through HDMI, any of the Oppos and many other DVD players and Hi-Def players will do, depending on what technology they use.
