Hi, I posted this question over the in new Onkyo 605 thread but it seems to have been glossed over as it is more of a connection / cabling issue than anything else. Can some here please clear this up for me?

All,
I currently have both optical inputs on the 605 in use. One for my PC and the other for my DVD player. I have an XM receicer called an XM-PCR that has been modified to have an optical output. I tested this out the other day and found it to be working when I run it into one of the optical inputs.

So, I figured all that I needed to do was get an optical / coaxial converter box:

And then run the coaxial output of that into either the 605's coax 1 or coax 2 input. I ran it into coax 1, and went into setup and assigned the "game/TV" to coax 1. I then chose "Game/TV" as the input source and lo and behold there was no sound

I did plug in the converted box using the supplied power supply. There are no lights on the unit so there is no way of telling if it is working or not. Since I have never used "coaxial" inputs I wasn't sure what kind of cable to use. I just used a standard RCA cable that was part of a 3 connector video-left-right cable. I used the yellow video cable. Maybe the cable is the wrong cable?

Digital audio cable is 75 Ohm coax (aka RG6 or RG59) with RCA plug termination.

The yellow video cable should work. However almost any RCA audio cable will work, so try one of the audio cables (red or white) in the bundle.

RubberToe, you're not the first person I've seen in these forums who has had problems with this converter. Your link to it doesn't work, but I think I know which one you're talking about. It looks like this:

I presume that you DO have it plugged into a power source. As trekguy said, the yellow "video" cable should be just fine. I guess your DVD player doesn't have a digi coax out, huh?

Thanks all,
I still haven't gotten around to tryong these yet, but it looks like tonight I will. First I'll try using the other two RCA cables in place of the yellow one. If that doesn't work, then I'll verify that the optical cable itself still works by running that into one of my optical inputs. I was reading elsewhere on avsforum that th eoptical cables can actually break if they are coiled too tightly. That could very well be the problem. I'll report back on what I find.

Finally some closure. Turns out that the direct optical connection didn't work either. This had me scratching my head as that same path had worked for many hours of testing, which is why I decided to put the XM-PCR back into my system, but driving it into the coaxial input. So, then I'm swapping optical cables trying to find a good one. The first three don't seem to be working reliably, which seems funny that so many cables would take a dump at the same time. While I'm doing this, I happen to look into the optical output from the XM-PCR, and I see the red light not only changing in intensity over time, but also going out and coming back on too. Theres your smoking gun. I switched over to the analog stereo output to the receiver and all is now good.

Did you perform the mod for the XM-PCR yourself? If so... you may want to check all soldering for cracks/shorts/etc....
