View Full Version : Renting Blue-ray titles
doctorj 07-02-07, 08:53 PM I don't buy many movies. I'm a renter. I've been with Blockbuster Total Access for about 4 months now. I got my PS3 for father's day and I have converted most of my queue to Blue-ray titles. The problem is over 75% of them are not available (long wait, very long wait, etc.). They keep sending me SD titles that are at the bottom of my queue. Are you guys having the same problems? Is Net-flix any better for Blue-ray titles? When I say better, I don't mean how many titles they claim to have. What I mean is can you actually get them within a reasonable time frame? Are the waits long like with Blockbuster?
Icemage 07-02-07, 09:12 PM Blockbuster is rolling out a bunch of stores with Blu-ray this month. You should see your queue times decrease, and you may have one of the 1,450 stores that will be getting Blu-ray discs near you assuming you don't live on the back side of beyond.
Bunga99 07-02-07, 09:16 PM Yep....My wife just came back from the local BB that rents Blu Rays. They told here that they plan to expand to ANOTHER 150 Blu Ray titles in the store. They probably have 60-70 titles in the store now and I noticed the ones in our Queue has been stating "Available" more often for the past week or two so it seems to be getting better.
Thx,
Claude
Jiffylush 07-02-07, 09:22 PM Netflix's online offering of blu-ray titles is better, when I opened my netflix account I moved 15 'Coming Soon' titles from BB to Netflix and all but one were available now.
I still have the 2 movie plan from blockbuster so I still get the free monthly game rental, plus BD titles in the mail (usually) and I occasionally go to the local store to get free rentals instead of sticking them back in the mail.
Basically, Netflix is better online, Blockbuster is nice for the local option, so I went with both and am very happy.
Haven't tried BB, since the closest store is over five miles away and I never go there. But I've had great success with Netflix with BD. Usually ships to me on the same day that they receive my previous disk. Of course, I stick only with the titles that are available now, not those that are listed as "Short Wait."
steven975 07-03-07, 01:19 AM My local BB is clearing space for Blu-Ray.
As for BB Online, I have had no issues with most HD-DVDs. Now, however, I will do the HD-DVDs online and exchange for Blu-Ray titles in-store (I have both).g
iqjumpuw 07-03-07, 01:43 AM Blockbuster is your best bet. They were very reliable when I did the online membership thing a while back.
The_Dark_Knight 07-03-07, 01:59 AM Netflix seems to be much faster for the time being.
I never have to wait for my Blu-Rays.
The only short wait I ever had was for Apocalypto and they still mailed it out on time despite being a "short wait".
My Local BB's (all 2 of them) do not have ANY b;u ray. none, nada, zip.
I'm not having much issue with Netflix- though Goodfellas shipped to me from Denver- I'm outside Boston! that was a 5 day mail in time, but the return was next day to the local Netflix distro center.
It sounds like Netflix is a little better. But I still find that they are lacking quite a few of the titles that are available, and there is a long wait on some of the titles that they do have in stock. Which really bites, because HD-DVD/Blue Ray rentals was the whole reason I joined Netflix.
BB is having major financial difficulties, and has a much poorer choice than Netflix.
OldCodger73 07-03-07, 04:36 PM I've only had the Panasonic 10a for a couple of weeks so I have limited long-term experiece. I belong to Netflix and the BD movies in my queue ship the day they receive a previous movie. So far I've had no wait.
By the way, shouldn't this thread be in Blu-Ray Software rather than here?
doctorj 07-03-07, 05:38 PM Sounds like I may give Netflix a try at least for the free 2 week trial.
And yes I realize now after the fact that this should have been in the Blue-ray software forum. I'm still learning my way around here.
Baccusboy 07-04-07, 01:21 AM We have Hollywood Video here, and they have at least 25 PS3 games for rent, as well as a half/half mix of BR and HD-DVD. The stores in my hometown don't sell much of anything. I have to drive an hour to find stuff.
Bill Broderick 07-04-07, 08:22 AM I'm having the same problem with Blockbuster Total Access for both Blu-ray & HD DVD. So far, I'm sticking with them because I'm taking advantage of the free in-store rentals in order to watch some TV series' that I've never seen, but didn't want to start watching in the middle (such as 24 & Lost). When my local BB starts stocking Blu-ray, I may remove all of the Blu-ray titles from my queue and only use Total Access for HD DVD and get the Blu-ray discs for free when I return the HD DVD's.
For now, I've been supplementing Total Access with rentals from a Hollywood Video that isn't particularly close to my house, but is located in a place where I drive a couple times a week. I'm much more likely to find titles that are at the top of my BB queue at Hollywood, than I am to receive them from BB any time soon.
getsomefilm 07-04-07, 01:43 PM I have been renting blu-rays from Netflix for over 8 months and haven't any problems with waiting for titles. Out of the 50 or so blu-rays on my list right now, i think only 2 of them are listed as short wait.
