View Full Version : Using a VGA PC monitor as a display? SpencerStarnes 07-03-07, 02:18 AM I need to buy a box that will let me use my 1440 X 900 VGA LCD Flat pannel to watch DVD's, TV, and what ever I want to throw at it. anyone have any sugestions? xiaxie88 07-03-07, 02:24 AM You mean your monitor has VGA, but not DVI-HDCP? Nowadays it seems that DVD players don't have VGA output. Some upconversion DVD players do have HDMI output which can be connected to DVI-HDCP by a small adapter that costs just a couple of bucks. For TV watching, do you mean analog or digital? Most digital cable receivers and OTA receivers have VGA output. So that's a good news for you. SpencerStarnes 07-03-07, 02:41 AM Well, All I want to do is take a standard Component signal and convert it to VGA. What type of device do I need to do that? xiaxie88 07-03-07, 02:49 AM I see. So you have confirmed that VGA is the only input for the LCD. Now you need a component-video-to-VGA box which costs about $50. Is your DVD player interlaced or progressive-scan? How can you feed TV signal to the box? I guess your digital cable box or OTA HDTV tuner has progressive-scan component-video output. SpencerStarnes 07-03-07, 02:56 AM My cable box is a standard Cox DVR, and my DVD player has Progressive Scan. And it actually has upscaling to 720p. strangly enough, it has a VGA output. except it will not let me use it while watching DVD's because of copy protection. SpencerStarnes 07-03-07, 02:59 AM any suggestions on what brand, and where I should get this box? Axatax 07-03-07, 03:43 AM As long as you can transcode to VGA and the monitor has sufficient geometry controls to compress the raster to the desired AR you should be good to hook. Kei Clark 07-03-07, 04:18 PM Converting VGA to component or component/VGA to DVI is cheaper than component to VGA. Key Digital (KD-VA5) and Audio Authority (1365) both have component to VGA converters. I use a DVI (HDMI) to VGA converter for my non-HDCP monitor. |
