The Plasma Bugs? The starship ambush? The outpost ambush? The gooey Brain bug? Edit: I thought you ment the VFX, my bad.
The sound effects will knock your socks off in PCM for sure.
ROFL the humans launch a retaliatory strike against the bugs. 500,000 dead in 20mins (or something like that)
Talk about an anti war film. If it where released today people would hail it.
Very underated film. Verhoeven is a madman. :)
If I can play it in the US I'll buy.

Eric D. 07-04-07, 03:50 PM This film is my biggest guilty pleasure. It's just so over the top that I can't help but love it. If the disc will play on my machine, I'll get it for sure.
"The only good bug is a dead bug".
Neo1965 07-04-07, 03:51 PM This is my favorite. Most people don't get the over the top "Only good bug is a dead bug" dialogue, but I think there is a hidden social commentary in there that supercedes the inherent need in all of us to build campfires and sing Kumbaya.
Me, I loved the way the bombs go off, the way the bullets are expended, the way the guts spill out from the CG bugs. If you take it at face value, then you missed the tongue in cheek humor about the movie that presents a fascist future of humanity confronting aliens that would rather eat you than sing campfire songs with you.
I loved the Rodger Young.

I loved the idea of the scale of interstellar warfare fought by infantry:

Apparently, there's a Starship Troopers 3 in the making. Dina Meyer is resurrected (implausible, but :D ).

I can't say enough about this movie. I will collect every single version. I even got the UMD!

That's why I'll be getting the Australian version. It'll save me some dough. Same goes for The Rock, Crimson Tide, and Bruce Almighty.
kowhite 07-04-07, 04:11 PM Man this can't come out soon enough. Insta-buy...the action, visuals, and sly satire just are too entertaining.
Dave Mack 07-04-07, 04:46 PM What's scary is that it's NOT all that subtle and yet the satire still goes over many's heads...
They had this in HD on comcast last month OnDemand and it looked fab...
The Verhoeven commentary track on the DVD release is one of the few that I have ever actually sat through and listened to. If I remember correctly the only thing that surprised him more than so many not getting that it was a satire with an anti-facist message was the fact that absolutely everyone hated that he killed Dizzy instead of the annoying future Bond chick. :)

I agree on both of your points. The movie isn't subtle and it will look great on HD!
akosoft 07-05-07, 10:22 AM Man, reading these posts, i'm proud to be Dutch :D (but i ain't cheap LOL)
Rachael Bellomy 07-05-07, 11:12 AM Might this film be edited in the U.K. ? I doubt they'd touch co-ed showers but some of the bug violence is so extreame. That seems like the kind of stuff they might snip and clip away at?
Is it pure as Paul V's mother's breast milk or perverted....the showing in the U.K. ? Milk or Koolade...?
".....I wanna learn more....." ;)
madpoet 07-05-07, 11:23 AM The problem is of course you just have to forget the very excellent book and think of this as a movie that happens to share the same name. When I first saw it I was horrified (huge fan of the book). But the movie grew on me in a campy way once I took it as a stand-alone work :)

What's worse is that the U.S. dollar doesn't go nearly as far Down Under as it recently used to. A couple of years ago Australia was the best place to order from in terms of the exchange rate -- now it's only slightly better than the Euro!

Good thinking!
The Play.com site lists it as lasting 124m, same as the last Sky airing.
In contrast, the theatrical version lasts 129m, same as the Showtime (or HBO's, I'm not sure) airing a long while ago.
So, avoid this one like the plague!
I'll try to see if the French version to be released one week sooner is untouched by the snipping madness.
JBlacklow 07-05-07, 01:07 PM The problem is of course you just have to forget the very excellent book and think of this as a movie that happens to share the same name. I took a whole different view. I liked Heinlein well enough, but this book infuriated me. I loved the movie for a variety of reasons, but near the top was that it was a hilarious satire on the exact same gung-ho fascism that was the cornerstone of the book.

On second thought, 129/124 is exactly the PAL/NTSC ratio speedup.
Maybe they just copied over the info from the regular PAL DVD...
