View Full Version : Two damaged Stargate Bluray disks in a row from Netflix
I got the Stargate Bluray from Netflix last thursday. I did not open it until Friday only to find a small crack at the outer edge. The PS3 would not play it. Just made a bunch of disk access noise, that's it. I reported it to Netflix and they sent me another one and I got it on Tuesday. I looked at it Tuesday itself and it looked ok. But when I played it today, again it won't play. I ejected it and closely examined it, there is a small bend in the edge of the disk!! Yikes. So, two disks in a row. I have reported the problem again. Well, this is so frustrating. For more than a week, I have not watched a movie from netflix. I am on the one-at-a-time program.

I have heard of other people complaining of cracked BR disks from Netflix. I wonder if the sloppy handling of the US Postal service is to blame? Have you ever experienced been cracked SD DVD disks?
Are the BR disks more brittle with the "hard" coating?
Baccusboy 07-05-07, 08:32 AM Interesting, you just learned of "cracks" happening on BR disks, and suddenly you get 2??
Here is where he first heard of BR's cracking. Curiously, he seems to have received a cracked one of his own suddenly:

I had a damaged disc the other day to...
Ah, I have had this with both HD-DVD and regular DVD? I wouldn't doubt it was the US Postal service, they handle these things like frisbees..... ;)

Who are you referring to as "he"? I did not post in the other thread. Yes, I did not get any cracked SD-DVDs till now. I have been a member for over 2 years. Now I get two in a row of BD. Weird. They were very minor cracks right at the edge. I think the post office sorting machine could be damaging it. The envelop seemed a little crumpled too. Very frustrating since I was all set to watch this movie last weekend and I have gotten two failed chances.
xbdestroya 07-05-07, 10:14 AM Unfortunately for both the BD and HD DVD sides of this format war, things like rentals from NetFlix can't be viewed as beyond sabotage, as from the daily posts/threads around here it's more than evident that there are those that would be willing to engage in such. Not saying that's what's happening here with these discs, but it'd be all too believable.
eatenbacktolife 07-05-07, 10:55 AM I've only had two disks that wouldn't play, and both had really small crack(s) along the outer edges. I'm guessing damage from shipping.

Paranoid much?

Are the BR disks more brittle with the "hard" coating? The BD is 1200μm thick. The hard coat is ≪50μm so its “brittleness” should be very similar to that of a CD or DVD.
enozdaed 07-05-07, 01:10 PM I have been a member of Netflix for about three years now and have received several SD DVDs that have been cracked and even shattered. It is not too common, but once I did get two in a row of the same disc that was broken. BTW. if you do notice that there is a crack in the BD, I wouldn't recommend trying to play it. It could completely come apart in the machine. Just send it back. I know how frustrating it is to get two in a row like that since you are only on the one at a time plan. So am I. Its hard to watch more movies than one or two a week!
RyanHomsey 07-05-07, 06:10 PM I got many many cracked blu-ray discs a few months ago. Back then, I was watching many movies per week and going through quite a few. Since then I have slowed way down. I've also moved to a new location. But I got so many cracked blu-ray discs, with a few instances of 3 times in a ROW of the same movie, that I complained to netflix. The representative agreed with me that I was getting an very large number of cracked discs and that I was due some sort of compensation. She gave me a substancial discount on 6 months worth of subscription to make up for it. I was certainly satisfied at that point and since then I have gotten very few, if any cracked discs.
It was also the same crack as well, very small and on the outer edge of the disc.
I posted about this here when it happened and basicly got flamed for it . People seem to be adamant about any sort of negativity stated towards their "side", a sad byproduct of this format "war".
jgantert 07-06-07, 10:58 AM I've had 3 cracked BR discs recently. 2 were from GamezNFlix, one from Blockbuster. I just started with Netflix, so none yet.
I think the hard coating has made the disks less flexable, so they are more prone to cracking in the mail. Just my opinion, no facts to back this claim up. :)

I have recently re-started my Netflix account just so I have some HD movies to feed my PS3.
I have received two cracked Casino Royale and two cracked Stealth BRDs, that's four out of six BRDs from them that had a crack. In all cases, it is a crack that is very short (1/4"/5mm), very faint, radially from the outer edge of the disc and it won't play. The movies that weren't cracked were the second Pirates of the Caribbean and Happy Feet.
Back when I rented DVDs from them, I think I only got one or two unplayable discs out of maybe a hundred.
