View Full Version : Here's a nice tip for removing those security stickers without leaving residue...
For those of you who find yourselves removing security stickers from your brand new Blu-ray movies, only to find a sticky residue that remains on the case...check this out:
I find the solution to this is to lift a small corner of the security sticker and then firmly yank (in one fluid motion) the remainder of the sticker off (just like you would a band-aid or a bikini wax tape).
I have yet to leave a smudge of sticky residue from the security stickers on my Blu-rays using this method.
Final tip: if you do happen to leave a smidge of sticky residue anywhere on the case, you can re-use the same security sticker you removed and just blotter the residue with the sticker. If you do it enough times, the residue will lift from the case.
dalamchops 07-05-07, 07:20 PM it took a lot of practice for me, but that's the same way i do it. It's gotta be quick and fast.
if all else fails, i got my bottle of goo gone ;p
You talking about the rectangular thick ones, the square flat ones, or the clear case edge ones?
I hate how I feel like I'm cracking a safe just to get my damn movie out
Bought my copy of The Patriot today, only to have the edge stickers leave residue on the case. I am PO'd. No reason for that to happen.
God, I hate those stickers too. My Blu-ray collection is 70 percent U.S. discs and 30 percent Japan releases. I never have to deal with this security sticker crap on the Japanese Blu-rays which makes having to take it off the U.S. discs even more frustrating. I always tell myself that it's the price I have to pay for the cheaper U.S. discs.
BAMAVADER 07-05-07, 09:58 PM thankfully they have figured out you don't need three blasted stickers...
those stickers are on my all time stupid list. I have spent a small fortune on empty DVD case packs at Wal-Mart because of ruined cases from sticky residue.
BTW, you are right about the fast yank removal method, that's what I do.
<><
mshanley87 07-05-07, 10:57 PM the fast pull method works well, but even the fastest rip will do nothing on a hot humid day. i had to use glue remover to get the residue off of a couple of cases that i opened when it was too hot.
what is the purpose of the security stickers anyway, if they really did anything, video games would have them too, and i don't remember a video game with the stickers.

Yep, very irritating. I mean its wrapped in plastic, has the security tape (a lot of the times on three sides) and a security tape on the inside. I mean c'mon its a 25 dollar DVD, heck they do it on standard def DVD's. Frigging ridiculous.
I wanted to add the trick I have been using, and it works great. I literally just got done opening up The Patriot on Blu-Ray and have no residue...
The clear sticker on the top part, which is on all of them, I find removes easily with no residue. Its the two extra 'security' clear stickers on the side and bottom that almost always leave residue. I take a box cutter (or razor blade) and slice them down the middle and then open the case. You can then remove them by halves. Works like a champ, and really reduces the risk of residue. Hope this helps some folks ;)

Been using GOO GONE ever since CD's - a truly great product!
The problem with Goo Gone is the cloudy mess it leaves on the plastic after you wipe it off. I prefer yanking the sticker off in one motion, because it never leaves residue. And its FREE! :)

I forgot to add the box cutter part. Splitting it in two halves helps a lot... That's exactly how I do it. LOL.
We've almost got it down to a science now! :)
micah323 07-06-07, 01:27 AM lighter fluid!!!!!!!!!!!
thematrix49 07-06-07, 02:12 AM I've always used masking tape to peel up sticky glue.. just wrap some around two of my fingers then dab over and over till I get it all up.. works for most instances and doesn't involve any greasy liquids
Mineral oil is cheap and it works.
edvedder 07-06-07, 03:28 AM i used the same technique but in the hot summer days it does not work anymore. I will trying dabbin it with some tape or something else but i dont have the patience to spend alot of time trying to remove the left over sticker residue. I have a few cases that have really small sticky areas but oh well. The worse was with seven years in... I tore the plastic cover away when i did the fast rip. Since i like that movie alot i replaced the case with the Click case. The worst studios for the sticker crap is Sony and paramount (talk about paranoid). They feel the need to put three stickers on there so even if u get one off ok the other side could get you. The point of stickers is to prevent consumers from stealing them not to ruin a perfectly new product. Also stores should have good enough security systems nowaday so this is not neccesary. What i dont understand is why sony or paramount care so much about protecting retailers from losing products to theft. They get paid for the disks either way. Wish all companies were like warner and put only 1 at the top.
Stevie76 07-06-07, 03:41 AM I just donīt understand why these stickers are needed at all
Sometimes the cover has slipped a bit from itīs position and is stuck to the stickers as well, leading to a bit being ripped of the cover!
NOWHERE else in the world but the US are these stickers used.
In the rest of the world they just wrap it in plastic and thatīs it.
Mr. Cinema 07-06-07, 07:22 AM I don't mind the stickers, as long as they don't place one on the bottom. Sometimes, when the cover art is sticking out past the plastic covering, the sticker peels off some of the cover art. I HATE that. I've yet to find a solution of avoiding that problem.
Mobius_570 07-06-07, 08:09 AM Nail polish remover also works well. That stuff is amazing, good thing my wife keeps a big supply.
Goo Gone works for the glue. I can deal with one sticker but three drives me nuts!
JaylisJayP 07-06-07, 09:59 AM Just use Goo Gone
enozdaed 07-06-07, 10:49 AM You still have to be careful with the quick rip method. If the cover art is sticking out of the platic, it will rip the print right off. To my horror, I have had this happen before and no longer use the quick rip method.

if the sticker is on the cover, i dont think rip method matters in preventing ripped cover art.
Gary Murrell 07-06-07, 11:23 AM I have given up on any Sony or Disney releases regarding the stickers, I ordered a case of replacement cases from Sleevecity and I just junk the glue covered ones because it is a losing battle

Rachael Bellomy 07-06-07, 11:55 AM My complaint about the stickers is how many times I've cut or scratched myself with sharp implements prying them up. I've seen people pull all the plastic cover off the disc case in their frustration to open these things. My mom has done that. Lucky me, I open all her discs for her these days.... ;)
As a theft detterent, the tape is useless. I've been in Wally-Mundo and seen the tape cut clean and the disc removed. Most trips in there I see a few burgled cases. If losses really are a big deal maybe they should put those cardboard slip-cases on most stuff?
I yank the sticker off and if any glue is left then I put a sticky part of the sticker on it and yank it off again. Might have to repeat this till all the glue is gone but this works very well.
Patsfan123 07-06-07, 02:41 PM A plastic sticker isn't going to stop people from stealing a disc if they want to. I used to work at walmart and people just brought in and Exacto knife and just go around the edge. You can get off the plastic wrapping and cut off all 3 stickers in less than 10 seconds if you practiced. People would just take the disc, ditch the case and walk out... Really effective anti theft device there... Also if you wanna kill those security stickers that are rectangular and usually black, all you have to do is cut it. As long as the seal is broken and air goes in, its deactivated. I just used to cut them with my box cutter to deactivate them instead of dealing with the dumb magnet.
Kilian.ca 07-06-07, 06:33 PM These tapes and stickers are only found on US CDs/DVDs and BDs, why the paranoia?
I don't find residue left behind by the outside tapes to be much of a problem - perhaps it's more problematic in warmer places. Often the tape breaks whatever you do.
The other annoying thing I notice is that the top tape usually peels off some of the silver ink from the Blu-ray logo. :(
cheezycheech 07-06-07, 06:55 PM i just hate lifting the edge of the tape off the box without damaging the plastic. i guess i am that anal!! there has to be an easier way. wtf...
John Ballentine 07-06-07, 08:05 PM Bestine is best to use. You can pick it up at a craft/artist supply store. Trust me.
akosoft 07-07-07, 06:32 AM Why stickers if it's sealed?? (like play.com).
I've had a war with Apoclypse and many others. 3 stickers to remove....grrrr
The best tip would be: just seal don't sticker ;)
Patsfan123 07-07-07, 12:29 PM GUESS WHAT! I managed to pick up the Remastered Fifth Element BD last night at Wal-Mart (they had 3 out) for $19.96. The stupid security stickers around the edges are not there!! Just the normal top one with the title thats not supersticky. And the case is now like the Disney style cases with a snap on the right side. This is good news, I hope all the Sony BD's are packaged this way now. I'll put up a pic tomorrow night for proof if anyone is interested since I am on a mini-vacation now.
Patsfan123 07-08-07, 11:54 PM No stickers on the side or bottom. :D

No sticker!! And Disney style snap on side of case!

GamerGuyX 07-09-07, 01:44 AM I just tried this trick with my newly purchased Patriot Blu-ray disc and ended up ripping the actual plastic that holds the insert into the case.
Been there and done that. We need a removin stickers 101 class!
chidrock 07-09-07, 01:10 PM I always just use a knife to run down the middle and then peel off the two sides slowly one at a time. I do this with all of my movies and games. For CDs I just unhinge the case and peel the sides by pullin the case apart. I only had one leave anything on my hi def cases - the Dukes of Hazard HD DVD that I got from Warner.
Man I hate that sticky stuff...even Goo Gone can be annoying because it'll leave it oily if you're not careful.
My complaint about the stickers is how many times I've cut or scratched myself with sharp implements prying them up. My wife gets so worried watching me waving around my Exacto knife when taking off DVD and Blu-ray wrappers and labels that she now stands by my side like a surgical nurse and hands it to me as needed. The only thing missing is a big light above the table and surgical gowns.

I did the same thing, it's not much fun to resort to replacement cases, but they seem to be a necessary evil in the battle of case preservation. :(
Eric D. 07-09-07, 05:04 PM Where is the best place to buy replacement cases from? I have a couple that are just a mess because of the glue.

Can you post a photo of the aftermath? I'd like to see where you went wrong, if possible.
