View Full Version : 1080p Via Component From a Home Theater Computer

I've heard the best and brightest hang out in the VP forum so I was hoping to get a little help.

I need to run a 1080p signal from a HTPC to a sharp 52d92U display via component.

The computers video card is an 8600GTS and it capable of outputting component directly. However, it will only output up to 1080i via component and the picture overscans badly. The overscan is known driver issue and has been around for some time. Either way, the picture just isn't very pleasing when using the direct component out from the video card.

I'm pretty sure an option would be to use one of the DVDO processors (VP50) which could take the 1080p signal from the DVI output (via DVI to HDMI wire) and send 1080p through component. All content is HDCP free so this shouldn't be a problem.

Would anyone have any other suggestions? An ideal solution would be a regular AV receiver which could take the 1080p DVI/HDMI signal and output it at 1080p through component. It appears such a beast does not exist though.

Thanks

Doy have a native 1080P/60 source?

I suspect not, you would be best feeding a VP with the source in its native resolution. For Blu/HD this would usually be 1080P/24 or 1080I/60 and for DVD 480I/60. Some computer formatted file and HDTV sourced ones are natively 720P/60 too.

I am playing 1080p HD DVD and Blu Ray rips and also regular DVD's. Unfortunately the 8600 video card does not output 1080p/24 (to my knowledge).

I would be content for right now just outputting 1080p60.

I've forgotten what its called (Not really an HTPC person) but have you tried the little utility for NVidia that lets you specify alll display parameters, you might be able to custom spec the resolution you want with that.

If you are ocnsidering a $3000 vid processor, I would also consider getting a graphics card that outputs what you want (Do the new ATIs?).

What about an actual pro vid capture and output card, eg:
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/hd/

You would need to check but I think these can be used with unprotected sources. The intensity is much cheaper and will offer decent 1080P HDMI and Component output. The HD SDI products are possibly better still but need an expensive VP and deep pockets.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm not sure about the new ATI's, but I think they're limited to 1080i over analog. They will do 1080p/24 over digital though, so perhaps if I'm going to use a VP the ATI card would be a better choice.

The NVIDIA utility you speak of won't allow you to select 1080p as the output, only 1080i.

Those other cards you mention are interesting, but I'll have to research a bit more to see if they would work.

.....Does anyone know if the VP30 would work for my problem? From the DVDO website it indicates that a future software update would allow the VP30 to output 1080p over component. Has this update arrived and is anyone using it?

Thanks
