Wow. If that turns out to be true, would definitely make me forgive the Faroudja decision.

Separately, sucks for the Europeans that are getting ripped off in paying a ~$600 premium over a standalone BD player.

I will definitely buy one for $ 600 the day it comes out and I don't even have an HDTV yet. (getting a plasma in november)

I will sell my PS3 and get this to go with my A2 if this player allows external decoding of Tru-HD and DTS ma. :)

Grubert has posted an explanation (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10961540&&#post10961540) for how this news story is wrong and that the Samsung BD-UP5000 will actually be around 400 Euro ($540) more than a Blu-ray player.

if this is true then it would be a waste of effort taking into conderation standalone HD DVD players are sold at as low as $240.

Another $1000 dual format player...

Whichever company puts out a dual format player for <$500 wins

If it costs less than or equal to a BR and HDDVD player combined (models with equal fetures mind you) then it's still a deal and I will still buy it.

Do not get your hopes up on this price issue. Samsung just announced the pricing for it's 2 new players:

BP - 1400 - $549

BP- 2400 - $649

So you tell me how a DF player is going to be priced the same? It will be in the $799 to $999 price range. To think otherwise is ignoring the facts.

Pricing is not set yet, and it will probably be set according to prices of players at the time of release.

With the MSRP of the HD-A2 at $299 and Sony's 300 at $499, I would assume that if the unit came out today, it would be $799 at the highest.

When it finally does arrive, it will have to be less than that, otherwise Samsung will have one heck of a time getting anybody to buy the unit.

But Samsung does not want"everyone" to buy it. They want the EA's that are still sitting on the fence who are waiting for a decision in the war. This player negates that issue - plays both - buy whatever movies you want - it will play them. They will have something unique - you don't give away profits on a 1 only - solution based player.

Your $799 is too low. Samsung wants profits - they haven't made any yet on BRD - their sales have been too low. The 5000 is the ticket to profits. Once the tooling is paid for - THEN they can start lowering the price.

This is not true. Why would a company not want to sell there products?

Because they understand that the price will be in a range that is not within the grasp of J6P. The player is priced for the EA. That is the target market.
