Alright, here we go!

I'm trying to hook up a G4 tower through an Onkyo (TX-SR 674) receiver to a 46" JVC LCD (1080i)

I have an adapter that converts DVI to component. This adapter has dip switches: 16:9, 1080i, 720p, 540p, 480p, 480i.

I have a single HDMI cable (running through the wall) from the receiver to the lcd. I have all my video feeds running through the receiver for ease of source switching.

At this point I have run the G4 through the receiver, programed the receiver to accept the input. When I bring up the Display control panel, the Mac sees the G4 and labels it VGA Display. I have tried all sorts of resolutions and HTZ configurations. I have the adapter switched to 1040i. No Love!

Please, any suggestions would be very appreciated!

And this: "the Mac sees the G4" I take to mean the Mac sees the JVC? Or the Onkyo? Or does it just say "VGA display"?

You might want to give us a little more to go on with your OS version and display card in the G4. And what kind of DVI -> component adapter you're using.

Why even use a component adapter. Just get a DVI to HDMI cable and hook it up to the HDMI input in the 674. I did this with my G4 and H/K AVR 745 receiver and it works beautifully in 1080i.

Thanks for the replies!

Sorry Wildrock, you are right. The G4 does see the JVC in the Display control panel. I'm not quickly able to access the rear of the LCD. I'm not willing to try to unmount the LCD on my own, trying to hold the LCD and unhook the connections isn't a 1 man job. I'll have to wait till the beginning of the week to find assistance.

As for the G4: It's running OS 10.4.10. The video card is a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX.

Since I've not posted enough, I cannot give the URL for the adapter. You can take a look at it on Ebay, auction number 320121858676

I've also tried to use my G4 Powerbook. 10.4.10 w/ ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 card.

I'd love to use HDMI to the receiver but I've already used the 2 inputs on the Onkyo.

Thank for the help!

No mention of nVidea or OS X support, so maybe that's your issue. Anybody else have a thought?

I'll assume that you have some other HD video sources hooked up to the two Onkyo inputs. Have you tried unhooking one of them and seeing if the Mac works fine through DVI/HDMI? Maybe one of your other sources can go component, instead.

This is the exact advice I was going to give! In my experience, component and HDMI have pretty similar quality. Since the Powermac cannot do component, I highly recommend sticking with DVI to HDMI cable.

Same here. I just got one of the new Onkyo receivers and for some reason the Onkyo doesn't like passing the video to the TV. I just hooke my PB G4 directly to the TV with the DVI>HDMI cable that I bought real cheap at monoprice and it works fantastic. Then I hook up sound to the Onkyo only.

Hope this helps.

Hmm. May be Onkyo is doing something funky. I tried it with my H/K receiver 247 and 745 and they work fine.
