View Full Version : 2.35:1 Lens
Hello, My first post:
I'm in the process of finishing my new multi-purpose/cinema room; 30'X30', 72"X128" screen, 28' throw length, Yamaha RX-V2600, Klipsch RS all around except the two DT Supercubes, and the Pana PT-AX100U (not out of the box yet). The main use will be movies and NFL.
With the main use being movies, I'd like to duplicate the theater look as best I can so...What is the best cost/value 2.35:1 lens to put on the Panasonic AX-100U?
I've seen info on the Kodak 333/777 in the forum but I can't find ANY information outside of this venue. IS there a good source for a lens that doesn't cost what I paid for the projector?
This forum has been a great help in developing this project. Thanks for being there!
Do you have a link to the "Kodak 333/777"?

Isn't the Kodak 333/777 a projector that was made by Infocus (777) and tweaked/rebadged by Kodak (333)? I do not believe that it is a lens solution.
I'd never heard of it so why I wanted a link....

Hello, you are all correct. After looking again at the "official 2.35:1 thread I see that the reference to the 333/777 was regarding the projector not the lens. sorry for the confusion.
Does anyone have an answer to my root question? "a anamorphic lens that doesn't cost more than I paid for the projector?"
Thanks,

Hi Bohnzy. Besides going the DIY route, your most affordable entries for anamorphic
lenses are CAVX aussiemorphic and the Home Theater Brothers AR Lens by rdub (Randy). Both are members of this board, so you can search for them. I gave the
HTB-AR (Coated) Lens a go; and can only say that I am extremely pleased by its
fit, finish and performance for the price. More importantly; when there was a mishap
by the USPS delivery, Randy solved the problem inmediatly and in a proper manner.
Exemplary customer service and follow up. If it sounds like an endorsement; well,
it is ;) . Regards.

Mark,
Here is a link to the thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=644501) on it. And here is a link to the 777 (http://www.infocus.com/Products/Projectors/SP777.aspx) . The 333 is the same projector, except it has modifications that were specifically done for Kodak for use in theaters.

My two cents -
I've used inexpensive anamorphic lenses (two of them) ... but have since moved up to the Prismasonic FE1500M. I paid just under 2K for the lens. Yes, there are less expensive products out there ... and there are better lenses that cost more. But I'm as pleased as I can be with this lens. I found the other less expensive products were just not good enough.
BTW, just so I don't alienate anyone on this forum ... the less expensive lenses I had are not from CAVX nor HTB. And they're not even sold anymore. Mark's (CAVX) product could very well meet your needs. I just can't say. But even Mark would agree, I'm sure, that the Prismasonic FE1500 is a very good cost effective solution.
It allows for "Passthrough" so you can lock the lens in place and simply turn the knobs (or push a remote button if you get the "R" version) to go into anamorphic mode.
The build quality and preformance of the FE1500 are very good.

Agreed there...

You are some GOOD people out there! Fantastic input, honest non-biased opinions and information that one can use to gather facts and make their own choice.
I will continue on my quest to become confident in my choie and let you know what the out come is.
I'll also post some pictures when I get some contrasting color on the walls so folks can see what is what.
Again, THANK YOU!

Given that this thread is in the DIY CH section, the most obvious way to get an anamorphic lens that doesn't cost as much as a projector is to make your own! If DIY is not your thing, then you know what your options are. Good luck!
I have the ax100u and made my own DIY lense, similar to what CAVX and HTB sell, I think they are a fantastic, affordable solution.
Keep in mind that I'm also running the Spherex XBox 5.1 Surround Sound System as my sound until I have room in the budget for a real sound system so it should be clear I am not adverse to budget purchases :)

Is anybody using the Mits HD1000u with one of these 2:35 screens and lens things? Sorry to sound like such a newb about this stuff, but I'm just wondering if my projector would actually work with this concept. My biggest issue is that I play alot of video games (Xbox 360 and PS3) and I wouldn't want to sacrifice resolution while playing my games. I also wouldn't want to pillarbox.
Side pillars can be covered with side masking - that should not be an issue nor should it be a deciding factor not to get into CIH...

Hi Anthony1,
I'm using a Mitsu 1000U w/ a Prismasonic FE1500M & Key Digital switcher, it's awesome. I can't imagine going back to plain 16x9. I run my PS3 & Xbox360 games in pass thru mode on the lense, so no res. loss. Go for it you won't regret it.
